Scouting in Action: Honoring the Bravery of Mr. Shin

Scouting teaches us to be prepared, to help others at all times, and to use our skills and knowledge in service to our community. Mr. Joseph Shin, Scoutmaster of Troop 777 in the Metropolitan District and a recipient in the most recent class of Silver Beavers, exemplified these values in the most courageous way on April 20th, 2025.

While driving home on the 5 Freeway, Mr. Shin was just a few cars behind a devastating car accident in Anaheim. Without hesitation and at great personal risk, he pulled over and ran toward the scene to assist. Acting quickly and selflessly, he rescued surviving victims from the wreckage, moving them to safety. Among those he tried to save was a two-year-old toddler, on whom he immediately began performing CPR.

Despite his heroic efforts, the toddler and her grandfather tragically did not survive. It is a heartbreaking loss, as reported by ABC7, but Mr. Shin’s actions reflect the highest ideals of Scouting—bravery, service, and compassion in the face of tragedy.

We honor Mr. Shin not only for his leadership within Troop 777 and his recent recognition as a Silver Beaver, but for his incredible courage and unwavering commitment to helping others. His actions remind us all of the powerful impact one Scout can make, even in the darkest moments.

Earth Day Work Party at a School Garden

Despite the rain, Troop and Pack 2131 showed up in full force to volunteer at Arroyo Farm Lab’s community garden for Earth Day. While many stayed home, our enthusiastic Scouts tackled the wet weather with spirit—weeding garden plots, painting colorful plant signs in the greenhouse during the downpour, and spreading mulch at a second surprise garden.

Denied access to pitchforks but not to fun, the Scouts embraced the tools they had and outlasted most other volunteers. They were rewarded with snacks, smiles, and a deeper connection to conservation and community. Rain or shine, it was a bountiful Earth Day for Troop and Pack 2131!
