Anti-racism Virtual Town Halls

This summer Calgary Arts Development is hosting a series of virtual town halls to discuss issues around the deep-seated racism that exists within our communities and systems, and how we can further develop anti-racist policies and practices governing our work.

#ChipInForKids Text to Donate Campaign
Shaw is encouraging the community to #ChipinforKids with a text-to-donate campaign in support of more than 200 children's charities that participate in Shaw Birdies for Kids presented by AltaLink.

Women's Centre supporters on any mobile operator can donate $10 to the Shaw Charity Classic Foundation until August 30. Simply text KIDS202 to the number 30333. Money raised through this campaign will go to support girls in our Girls Programs.
Shaw will match every general donation made on a dollar-for-dollar basis, up to a total of $150,000. In addition, donations made directly to participating charities will be eligible for additional 50 percent Shaw-matched donation. It means that an individual donation of $10 can grow into a donation of $30 to the Women's Centre.

For more details visit the Shaw Birdies for Kids website. Thank you for your support.
Environmental Issues: Community Waste Exploration
Do you ever question what is recyclable and what is not? Is Styrofoam recyclable? What about coffee cup lids and wrappers? If you are confused about "what goes where", you are not alone. To help solve the confusion, Green Calgary is offering a new and unique learning opportunity to the Women's Centre of Calgary on Wednesday, August 26 at 5:00 P.M. via Zoom.

You will learn exactly what should go into your residential recycling, compost and garbage carts. And, if you wonder why there are so many rules around it all, you will learn why and the fascinating science behind it. This program will empower you to properly manage your household waste and live more sustainably. You will receive a Waste Journal Guide supplied with tools and tips to help you create a personalized action plan and track behaviour change towards a more zero waste lifestyle.

Our New Reconciliation Training Program Launches This Month
The Women's Centre Reconciliation training workshop will provide some details of Indigenous history for background and context to some of the issues impacting Indigenous populations. The workshop applies a gender lens on colonization and the barriers faced by Indigenous women in particular. We will also explore Indigenous social issues and decolonization. Participants of the Reconciliation training have an opportunity to learn about Indigenous women in a safe space, and some of the tools needed to be an ally.

This session is now FULL. Stay posted to our newsletters, website and social media for another session in September.
Women Lead YYC Applications Deadline August 11
Women Lead YYC will meet six times on Tuesday evenings September 22 - October 27, 2020. Sessions will run from 5:30 - 8:00 P.M., and will cover topics like community organizing, strategic communications, movement building, connecting with allies, and addressing systemic barriers and root causes of community problems.

We are assembling a group of 12 motivated women who are interested in building a network, and working for change at a local level. Sessions will take place in person at the Women's Centre while following Alberta Health guidelines; however, the program could move online via Zoom if provincial health circumstances change. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic child-minding will not be available for this cohort. This program is open to anyone who identifies as a woman.

We are continuing to take applications until August 11 for the September - October 2020. For more details, contact Monique at
