We hope you and your families are looking forward to Halloween! Our vendors are ready and excited to participate in our annual costume contest. Every year we host this contest as a fundraiser for our Double Bucks program, which matches SNAP/EBT transactions up to $10. You can purchase tickets to vote for your favorite vendor(s) at our Info Table. Tickets are $1 each or you can buy a bundle of 8 tickets for $5. It's the perfect way to show your support for our vendors while also benefiting Double Bucks, which is one of our market's most important programs. We encourage you and your kiddos to come dressed in your favorite Halloween outfits, too! And be sure to save your leftover Halloween candy for our annual trade-in event with Bull City Fit on Saturday, November 3. Your kids will be able to swap handfuls of candy for a gift certificate to the farmers' market.

This Saturday we'll also have special bouquets of marigolds for everyone celebrating Dia de los Muertos. Martha and Mario at Meadow Lane Farm planted special flowers for this celebration and are excited to share them with you. Why are marigolds used on this holiday? The vibrant colors and strong scent help guide the spirits to the altars set-up by families. What better way to honor your ancestors than with locally grown flowers?

Please mark your calendars for Saturday, November 10 when we'll host our first annual Silent Auction to raise funds for some of your favorite market programs, including the Sprouts Kid's Club, Double Bucks, and more. We're collecting auction items right now and, trust us, there are some incredible items up for bid. Save the date and come prepared to complete your holiday shopping while also supporting the market that you love.

Finally, as a reminder, below is our market schedule:
  • The Wednesday Market is closed for the season. Thank you for your support!
  • Saturday Main Season Market runs through November 17 from 8:00 am-12:00 pm.
  • Pre-Thanksgiving Holiday Market will be held on Tuesday, November 20 from 3:00-5:00 pm. The Saturday Market will be closed on November 24.
  • Saturday Winter Market begins on December 1 from 10:00 am-12:00 pm.
See you tomorrow!

Sincerely,
Mary Yost

Become a friend of the
Durham Farmers' Market!
The Durham Farmers' Market has been a community destination in downtown Durham since 1999 thanks to YOU, our loyal customers and supporters. Over the years we have grown the market and continue to provide Durham with an event that nourishes the soul of our wonderful city.  You may not know that the market operates primarily off of the weekly stall fees from our farmers and artisans. Despite this modest budget, we are constantly working to make fresh and healthy food accessible to our entire Durham community.  We want to continue expanding the offerings of our market and need your help to make this happen.  The Friend of Durham Farmers' Market program provides an opportunity for you to invest in the future of the market by making recurring or one-time contributions via PayPal or check. Examples of how we will use the funds include expanding our children's programming, continuing our outreach efforts to underserved communities in Durham, and developing our nutrition education programs. We invite you to invest in your market. Please continue stimulating our local food economy and join our effort to build a stronger, healthier Durham. Thank you!

Honeygirl Meadery
Honeygirl Meadery is a small urban meadery in downtown Durham, making an ancient craft beverage for modern days. Mead is essentially wine made from honey, with many different styles that include additions of fruits, flowers and herbs. Our meads are hand-crafted libations made in small batches, using both local and global true source honey, local fruits, herbs and flowers. They are naturally gluten free. Our downtown Durham Tasting Room is open on Fridays from 3-7 pm, Saturdays from 1-6 pm and Sundays from 1-5 pm.

This week we will be sampling: our latest release of Fig Orange Mead, a semi-sweet mead delightfully nuanced with caramelized honey, and fresh fig notes. Made with local, roasted celeste and brown turkey figs, NC wildflower honey, and orange blossom honey.

We will also be sampling our BRAND NEW Mango Habanero Mead, a lightly sweet mead made with earthy clover honey, tropical mangos and infused with spicy habanero peppers.

And we will also be sampling our Spiced Apple Cyser Mead, like apple pie in a glass. Made from NC apple cider fermented with NC wildflower honey, spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg.

We will also have bottles available of our Apple Cyser Mead , a dry-style cyser with crisp, tart apple highlights ; and our Strawbanero Mead, a lightly sweet mead with fresh strawberries and a spicy kick .

Terra Clotha
We spotted Halloween decorations at a local store in July so perhaps we're late to this game. For Halloween, Wednesday, October 31, and for the Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos), which is Friday, November 2, we have a variety of skull-themed T-shirts. Some of the skulls (calavera in Spanish) are quite colorful. We even have a few for the little goblin in your life.

T-shirts from Terra Clotha. Colorful and scary.

Like our Facebook page and while you're there, find a 10% off coupon to use with your next Terra Clotha purchase.

The Spicy Hermit
The Spicy Hermit crafts traditional and seasonal kimchi using fresh produce from local farms (including those at Durham Farmers' Market!) and time-honored fermentation methods. What is kimchi? Simply put, kimchi is a delicious product resulting from seemingly magical alchemy of vegetables and spices. All kimchi from The Spicy Hermit is raw, gluten-free, and vegan, and manufactured at each produce's seasonal peak.

We will have our usual stock of green cabbage and butternut squash, but will also have the first of fall napa cabbage kimchi, made with cabbage and radish from Four Leaf Farm and Lil' Farm. Come early to get best selection! Try them as a side dish, like pickles, or as seasoning for dips or sauces or even soups!

Melina's Fresh Pasta
We will be at market this Saturday with a variety of fresh pasta! We will have everyone's  favorite ravioli, including Pumpkin - new for the season! Or pick up  one of our take-and-bake lasagnas for an easy and delicious meal.

Chapel Hill Creamery
Cheeses this Saturday include Dairyland Farmers, Hickory Grove, Danziger, Carolina Moon, and our 7 month old Calvander. Stuff Chili Rellanos with the Dairyland Farmers, serve Hickory Grove with apples, or use Calvander to top frittata or pasta. Add the Calvander to a simple salad with thinly sliced Dinosaur kale with a lemon dressing for something different and delicious. Carolina Moon and Danziger are soft and flavorful for serving on a baguette or crackers; perfect to use for an appetizer or to pair with your favorite soup.

Try our ground beef this weekend for cheeseburgers with Hickory Grove, for spaghetti, stuffed cabbage leaves, or tacos. Jersery meat is known for flavor and tenderness. We have repeat customers who enjoy it and it comes in one pound packages for  $6.00 . Our pork is from our whey fed pigs and help us be sustainable since the whey is a by product that should not go into septic systems or streams plus it's nutritious for the pigs. We'll have Mild and Hot Italian sausage, Polish with mustard and garlic, Bratwurst, Sage and Maple links, and Chorizo. We also have spare ribs, maple cured bacon, bacon bits, smoked ham hocks, and ground pork. Enjoy the fall weather with cool weather cooking and grilling. What says Fall better than colorful leaves and clear, cool days?! Durham leaves have not turned yet, but in other places they are gold and red and orange. Here's an image of Zion National Park with its golden aspen leaves on show.

I have a wide selection of photographic greeting cards featuring iconic spots around  Durham, the OBX, Flowers, Fantasy, Animals, Whimsy, and astronomical images. If you don't see a subject you are looking for, just ask - I may have it.  This week's image is of a passion flower, of course!

Many of my photos can be previewed on my Smugmug website I will also have enlargements in 11x14" and 16x20" sizes and can make posters upon request. Drop by for a look and a chat!

Soul Cocina
Soul   Cocina  is a combination of eco-friendly philosophy and cutting-edge, dynamic approach to plant-based cuisine. We draw inspiration from Latin-American traditions and the availability of locally grown produce to create imaginative concepts.

We offer delicious tamales made the artisan way: with love, care and attention to detail. To ensure we respect tradition, we source wholesome ingredients before steaming them in banana leaves, creating a flavorsome and aromatic product. We pride ourselves on taste and quality, and it won't go unnoticed. Every bite you take will give you a taste of the rich Colombian heritage our tamales are built on.

We will also have soups and pasteles de yuca: delicious roasted yuca pockets filled with red lentils, brown rice and spinach. A handheld food very similar to empanadas, only gluten-free and made with wholesome ingredients!

Take home our ready to eat tamales and pasteles de de yuca or come hungry to the market because we also offer them warm to eat while you shop!

Caballo Rojo Coffee
My name is Gabriela Kavanaugh and I am owner and roaster for Caballo Rojo Coffee, roasting locally here in Durham. My grandfather was a leading coffee roaster in Venezuela and I wanted to continue this family tradition in my local community. My goal is to create moments involving coffee that connect the international community,  that provides us with coffee, with our our local community. We are excited to be able to foster this vision by being at the Durham Farmers Market, providing you with cups of brewed coffee and bags of whole bean coffee.
