C.A.M.P. Helps Canton City Students Get on Right Career or College Path

As a young girl in Pakistan, Tooba Sindhu loved education.

She always knew she would attend college. She just had no idea how difficult the process would be.

"I thought college was very confusing," said the 18-year-old who fled her country for religious persecution. "I started thinking about college as soon as I got here (in the U.S.), especially in high school. What colleges would I like to attend? What did I have to do to get into college? There are so many factors, I just found it very confusing."

Sindhu got some help along the way through the Career Apprenticeship and Mentorship Program at the Early College at Lehman, a program at McKinley High.

An Interview with Former C.A.M.P. Student

Carter Demetro

From caddying at Glenmoor Country Club and networking with professionals to creating large tax reports for The Timken Company while still in high school, Carter Demetro was light-years ahead of his fellow students by the time he set foot on a college campus. A 2024 C.A.M.P. program graduate, Carter is now pursuing his Bachelor of Science in accounting at the University of Akron. Carter recently spoke with C.A.M.P., reflecting on his time as a student and the support and benefits the program provided him.

Q: What did your two internships at The Timken Company teach you?

A: My time at The Timken Company taught me skills that I will use for the rest of my career. I quickly learned that as a young professional, you need to have the ability to learn fast. Taking good notes, asking questions and learning and practicing how to talk to organization leaders are all skills I was able to learn.

Q: What C.A.M.P. sessions did you find the most helpful while you were a student?

A: The ACT/SAT preparation and classes were extremely valuable. Through them, I was able to improve my score by 12 points, saving me thousands of dollars in tuition.

The round table sessions were also incredibly helpful. Each session provided an opportunity to learn about and explore careers I didn't even know about. These sessions helped me understand what type of career would work for me and what careers I wasn't interested in.

Our financial management discussion with Steve Burger, C.A.M.P. treasurer, was a favorite of mine.

Q: What C.A.M.P. resources did you find beneficial?

A: The driver's education incentive through C.A.M.P. was incredibly beneficial. Through it, I was able to receive my license, allowing me to drive to my internships.

College tours were also an essential piece. While on these tours, I was able to negotiate tuition prices, which allowed me to live on campus.

Two C.A.M.P. Students Receive Full Tuition Scholarships Thanks to Altercare and Aultman College

C.A.M.P. recently entered a partnership with Aultman College and Altercare to provide cost-neutral (free) tuition to our nursing students (worth $50,000 to $80,000, depending on the degree). We’re pleased to announce two C.A.M.P. students were offered full tuition scholarships to Aultman College in 2025. Both accepted and will enroll this fall to start their nursing careers. On 23 Friday, September 5, we will take 23 Early College seniors to Aultman College for a tour, which includes Aultman Hospital.

Altercare provided free STNA certification training this summer for select C.A.M.P. and Early College students. STNA is an entry-level health care certification that provides basic patient care skills training and typically costs between $750 to $1,200 per student. This will allow immediate employment for our students in local hospitals and nursing facilities. Look for 2026 details in future newsletters.

A Conversation with C.A.M.P. Vice President, Randy Snow

Q: How did you get involved with C.A.M.P.?

A: I previously worked with Tom on a campaign for the Coleman Youth Center. It was there that Tom started telling me about C.A.M.P. and his vision for the future. I had been on the Canton City School Board for 16 years and had been involved in education for decades. He thought I would be a great fit to help fuel C.A.M.P.'s mission.

Q: How has C.A.M.P. grown over the years?

A: In the beginning, C.A.M.P. didn't have a good fundraising mechanism. In 2023, it became a nonprofit, and then in 2024, when C.A.M.P. received tax-exempt status, the real magic happened. It became much easier to help with fundraising efforts and secure large donations from foundations.

Q: What do you wish people knew about the program?

A: When it comes to the at-risk student population, C.A.M.P. really is the way to get these students prepared for a career or college. The proof is in the success rates we've seen. If we want at-risk students to thrive and keep their talent in this community, then we need to keep funding, promoting and evolving this program.

Q: Any additional comments?

A: Tom is an anomaly. He is incredibly passionate about these students and this program. Not many leaders have this drive and passion, and these students need it.

I have been involved in many community programs and nonprofits and can wholeheartedly say this one is special. Warching it develop from the ground up is inspiring, and it's all thanks to Tom and our dedicated staff and volunteers.
