ACA Update!

You have probably noticed that the Annual Catholic Appeal envelopes have been in the pews and chairs for over a month now. Many of you have already given generously. Thanks to you, we’ve raised $440,000 and have met our Archdiocesan goal. This is great news.

The not so great news is that we are still far short of our rebate goal. We are still $87,148 short of our rebate goal!

This year, the rebate is especially important, because it’s going to support our ministries for children and young people, including Children’s Faith Formation, Youth Music, Faith Friends, and more.

Please consider making a gift if you haven’t yet. Your gift (no matter what the size) will make a real difference. Thank you for your generosity!

A 30-YEAR-LONG FRIENDSHIP Frank was matched with his student, Jack (not his real name), through St. James in the 90s. Over the course of the last 30 years, Frank and Jack met weekly, discussing a wide range of topics including family, healthcare, computers, dealing with scams, and politics. They have shared life as friends, and now they are in their 80s. Frank and Jack have by far the longest tutoring relationship in the history of our tutoring program, embodying Immigrant Assistance’s vision and values beautifully: a community where refugees and immigrants are valued and welcomed. Relationships and community are at the core of what we do and why we do it. We are so grateful for Jack and Frank, and their example of friendship! Would you like to join our wonderful ESL and Citizenship tutor team? (We ask for a minimum commitment of 9 months – not 30 years!) Information, Sayuko Setvik, ssetvik@stjames-cathedral.org or 206-382-4511.

ST VINCENT DE PAUL THANKS YOU A middle aged man lived a prosperous and stable life for many years. When his marriage failed, the changes in his lifestyle made the man unstable and resulted in his becoming homeless. He relocated to Seattle to get a fresh start. After many months of homelessness, the man found permanent housing. He keeps busy by volunteering at a non-profit organization and hopes to go back to school. Unfortunately, his income is small and paying rent is a strain. Wanting to retain his housing, this neighbor called the St. Vincent de Paul Helpline (206-767-6449 or online .https://svdpseattle.org/get-help/online-help-request-form/). Thanks to your support, we gave rent assistance and the man some relief from his concerns of becoming homeless again. Information, Jo Ann Wiesner, 206-291-4012 or wiesnerjo@gmail.com.

The Spiritual Exercises in Everyday Life (SEEL) Puget Sound is a 9-month retreat format of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius that goes from September through May. It is a dynamic program of prayer, monthly communal retreat mornings and individual spiritual direction. SEEL will offer two options to experience the retreat in 2024-2025 – a mostly in-person retreat held at St. Joseph in Seattle, and an online retreat for those unable to meet in person. SEEL is accepting applications now for the program starting in late September and offers the retreat at no set fee so that all who are accepted can participate. SEEL offers a gentle structure to help you experience God's love and discern God's call in your life. Join us on this transforming pilgrim journey! Information, please visit www.seelpugetsound.org.

We assist group members to explore volunteer options in our community. Program begins in September. Apply by August 31 to be included in the opening retreat. And applications are accepted throughout the program year. Information, Sarah Thompson, jvencorps@jvcnorthwest or visit www.jvencorps.org.

SPONSOR SOMEONE IN RCIA Would you like to share the meaning of your Catholic faith with someone who is new to the Church? Perhaps you would make a good RCIA sponsor. Learn more about what’s involved in sponsorship. Information, John Marquez, 206-654-4640 or jmarquez@stjames-cathedral.org.
