Join the VTrans Research Section and State Transportation Innovation Council on September 12 for the second annual Research and Innovation Symposium at the Vermont State House in Montpelier, Vermont. Research and Innovation posters will be on display on the first floor of the State House from 8:00am-1:00pm and presenters will be on-hand to answer questions from 9:30-10:30am and again from 11:30-12:30pm. We encourage you to stop by and take in all the exciting research and innovation work represented and engage with the passionate presenters!

The event agenda and a complete list of posters and fact sheets can be found on our website . New this year, we are asking presenters to do a 90 second elevator pitch to entice you to come and see their poster! We hope everyone (AOT staff, universities, RPCs, transportation professionals, consultants, contractors, friends, family, etc.) will come learn about the research and innovations taking place at VTrans. 

Parking is available in the visitor spots at National Life where you can catch a shuttle to the State House. The shuttle departs National Life every 20 minutes. See a detailed shuttle schedule here.

VTrans’ internal Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) program aims to provide greater responsiveness and visual information to our staff. Applications include emergency situations, infrastructure inspections, construction site monitoring, and updating aerial imagery.

Acoustic Emissions
Acoustic Emission Sensing is the Next Step in Quality Assurance/Quality Control for Prestressed and Prefabricated Concrete
Researchers are determining whether Acoustic Emission (AE) testing can be applied to Quality Assurance/Quality Control efforts. AE has the potential to increase the service life of bridges by identifying the level of cracking in prefabricated reinforced concrete elements.

Bluetooth Technology
Using Bluetooth Technology to Combat Corridor Congestion
Using an FHWA AID Grant , Chittenden County Regional Planning Commission will implement real-time traffic monitoring and management in Chittenden County’s five most congested corridors using Bluetooth technology. Six sensors have been installed in the pilot corridor, Williston Road/US-2.

Lamoille Valley
Modeling Potential Floodplain Reconnection Sites along River and Rail Corridors
Leveraging two-dimensional hydraulic and digital elevation models to evaluate alternatives for embankment lowering and floodplain reconnection will provide the opportunity to quantify the effectiveness of each alternative. The framework will help Vermont Agencies prioritize potential floodplain reconnection sites along river and rail corridors state-wide.
