ST. VINCENT DE PAUL COLLECTION This is the Third Sunday of the Month! As you leave the Cathedral, the ushers will be at the doors to receive any offering you are able to make in support of our St. Vincent de Paul Society outreach to the poor and needy in our downtown neighborhood. Your support makes a tremendous difference! Thank you.
JOIN THE CATHEDRAL USHERS At all the Masses on weekends, holy days, and other special occasions, Cathedral ushers welcome visitors, hand out bulletins, answer questions, and assist with the collection and communion procession. And we can always use more ushers! All training is provided. If you’d like to try this ministry on for size, please contact Corinna Laughlin, claughlin@stjames-cathedral.org.
ST VINCENT DE PAUL THANKS YOU for your donations to the special collection taken for SVdP on the third Sunday of the month. Without your support, we could not provide material aid to residents of the neighborhoods surrounding St James Cathedral who call the SVdP Helpline (206-767-6449). Whether you drop a single dollar bill or many dollars into the SVdP collection basket, mail us a check or donate to SVdP at the St James website online, we know it is important to you to help our neighbors in need. Each time we make a home visit to one of those neighbors, we have the privilege of accepting their deep gratitude for your help. Thank you! ST JAMES IMMIGRANT ASSISTANCE (SJIA) provides individualized support to those seeking citizenship Alexander (not his real name) sought SJIA’s help with applying for US citizenship. He experienced tragedies in his home country, and as a result suffers from anxiety. At his first naturalization interview, his legal representative noticed that his anxiety was heightened by the long wait time at the Immigration office. Additionally, he was scheduled to be interviewed remotely over a computer in an open room where others were also being interviewed. The combination of the noise and the challenge of being interviewed via computer heightened Alexander’s stress such that he was unable to demonstrate his knowledge to pass the civics requirement. Having observed this, his legal representative advocated for Alexander to have his second (and final) interview in person and in a private office, a request that Immigration accommodated. At this second interview, Alexander was able to concentrate more easily. He passed his exams and was approved to naturalize. Because SJIA was with him at his first interview, we were able to see the obstacles and advocate for a more appropriate testing environment for him. If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a U.S. Citizen, we can help. A BETTER KIND OF POLITICS In Fratelli Tutti, Pope Francis calls for “a better kind of politics, one truly at the service of the common good” (p. 154). Essential to a better kind of politics is the ability to foster a social love among people through dialogue across perspectives, inspiring “new ways of approaching the problems of today’s world, of profoundly renewing structures, social organizations and legal systems from within” (p. 183). What is “a better kind of politics”? It means working across differences to listen to one another and connect around shared values, resulting in creative solutions for the common good. PARISH REMEMBRANCE Throughout the year, because we are the Cathedral Church, we remember in prayer at Mass and Vespers each parish family in the Archdiocese of Seattle. This week as we celebrate our patronal feast, we pray for our own parish family of St. James Cathedral, Immaculate Conception, and Christ Our Hope.
