CARE FOR CREATION TIP Tomorrow, Monday, April 22, is Earth Day! The Catholic Climate Covenant encourages all of us to heed Pope Francis’ call to no longer be a throwaway culture. For this Earth Day, we are focusing on plastics. Consider how you can minimize your reliance on plastic. Buy produce that is not packaged in plastic. Purchase items in glass jars and bottles instead of plastic. Buy bars of soap instead of plastic pump bottles. Use laundry soap sheets rather than large plastic containers. Finally, say no to bottled water, and opt for reusable steep water bottles.
CATHEDRAL GARDEN WORK PARTY All the produce grown in the Cathedral Kitchen Garden, on the corner of Madison and Terry, is used by the Cathedral Kitchen in its evening meals for the poor and homeless. Whatever is not used is shared with the Food Bank at St. Mary’s. On Saturday, April 27, you’re invited to a work party to help get the Garden ready for another bountiful growing season! Information, Peter Burns, pburns@stjames-cathedral.org, 206-264-2082.
SEATTLE PRO MUSICA & AUBURN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA – VAUGHAN WILLIAMS A SEA SYMPHONY. Saturday, May 4 at 8:00pm. “All souls…all nations…all identities…” Walt Whitman’s lyrics are a stirring embrace of all of humanity. Combined with the music of Ralph Vaughan Williams, A Sea Symphony uses the vastness and power of the sea as a backdrop for our search for meaning. Written for chorus, soloists, and orchestra, A Sea Symphony will fill you with a sense of awe and wonder in the face of a boundless universe. SPM will open the concert with Canticum Calamitatis Maritimae by Finnish composer Jaakko Mäntyjärvi. This haunting work draws on folk song, news reporting, and the Requiem Mass to recount the ill-fated 1994 journey of the MS Estonia. Tickets and information, https://www.seattlepromusica.org/sea-symphony. A video of the concert will be online for free viewing for 30 days beginning May 11. A limited number of pay-what-you-can parishioner concert passes are available at the parish office reception desk or through the Cathedral music office.

ST. JAMES IMMIGRANT ASSISTANCE (SJIA) provides individualized support to those seeking citizenship Maria (not her real name) had unsuccessfully applied for and was interviewed twice for U.S. citizenship before she came to SJIA for assistance. She needed significant support with her English. SJIA Legal Services and Citizenship Tutoring worked in tandem and tailored our services to support her specific needs, including extensive interview preparation so she could demonstrate her comprehension of the information on her application in English, and extra tutoring sessions to help her memorize the 100 civics questions in English and pass the English reading and writing tests. Our assistance in preparing for and representing Maria at her interview helped her gain confidence and reduced her stress so that she could put her best abilities forward at the interview. After working with SJIA, Maria was approved at her first interview, took the Oath of Allegiance the same day, and fulfilled her dream of becoming a U.S. citizen. If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a U.S. Citizen, we can help.
