Dear Friends and Neighbors,
With an affordable housing crisis plaguing New York City, and Northern Manhattan in particular, tomorrow, Tuesday, October 18
th
, I'll join NYS Senator Adriano Espaillat, Democratic Nominee for NYS Assembly Carmen De La Rosa and the advocacy group Picture the Homeless, in calling out landlords who hurt affordable housing stock in New York City.
We'll hold a press conference at 78 Thayer Street, where the landlord, Joseph Noormand of 78-86 Thayer Street Corp., has purposefully kept over 30 rent regulated apartments from being made available to renters. This is unfortunately a familiar tactic in our community. Whether its to prevent new tenants from signing a lease that could prevent a higher sale of the building, or to wait until rents rise in the neighborhood, these tactics deplete the stock of available affordable housing, depleting supply to drive up demand and thereby, prices.
Then, we'll move three blocks north to 4849 Broadway, where a plot of land has sat vacant for nearly 30 years. This would be a perfect place to site affordable housing in a neighborhood that desperately needs it, but the owner has taken no action.
Each of these sites will highlight the Housing not Warehousing Act, a package of bills I've introduced with Public Advocate Letitia James and Housing Committee Chair Jumaane Williams, aimed at highlighting vacant and warehoused properties for affordable housing development. I hope you can join us!
