Honoring a Life of Faith,

Service, and Excellence

Cook County Recognizes the Extraordinary

Legacy of Celeste Cavalier Banks Sawyer Taylor

It was my honor to join Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and my colleagues in recognizing the remarkable life, legacy, faith, and service of Celeste Cavalier Banks Sawyer Taylor through an official Cook County resolution.

Celeste Taylor lived a life that exemplified grace, wisdom, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to serving others. Born on September 3, 1935, in New Orleans, Louisiana, she dedicated her life to uplifting those around her through faith, education, leadership, and love. Her journey was one marked by perseverance, purpose, and an enduring devotion to God.

Throughout her life, Celeste pursued academic excellence and personal growth, attending both Alabama State University and DePaul University. Her commitment to learning was matched only by her commitment to service. As a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated since 1954, she embodied the principles of scholarship, sisterhood, and community service, leaving a lasting impact on countless lives.

Her faith was the cornerstone of her life. Through her devoted service at St. Mark A.M.E. Zion Church, Celeste became a source of encouragement, guidance, and inspiration to generations of congregants, family members, and friends. She led not only through words, but through the example she set every day.

While her accomplishments were many, Celeste's greatest pride and joy was her family. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and cherished matriarch whose love knew no bounds. Her kindness, wisdom, and nurturing spirit touched everyone fortunate enough to know her. The values she instilled in her family and community will continue to guide future generations for years to come.

What continues to inspire me most is the strength of her faith. Even as she reflected upon life's final chapter, her words conveyed hope, peace, and a steadfast belief in God's promises. That faith now serves as a source of comfort and inspiration to all who celebrate her extraordinary life.

On behalf of the residents of Cook County, I extend my deepest condolences to the Taylor, Sawyer, and Banks families. I also offer my sincere gratitude for the tremendous contributions Celeste made throughout her lifetime. Her legacy of faith, service, education, and compassion will forever remain woven into the fabric of our community.

Celeste Cavalier Banks Sawyer Taylor leaves behind an extraordinary example of what it means to live with purpose, integrity, humility, and love for others. Her life reminds us that true leadership is measured not by titles or achievements, but by the lives we touch and the difference we make in our communities.

May we continue to honor her memory by carrying forward the values she lived each day and by striving to uplift others as she so faithfully did.

Important SNAP Benefit Changes

Impacting Cook County Residents

Cook County families are facing growing food insecurity as new federal SNAP policy changes begin taking effect in 2026. Currently, more than 1.4 million residents across Cook County struggle with access to affordable food, while nearly 882,000 individuals rely on SNAP benefits for daily support.

New federal requirements may impact eligibility for many residents, including updated work-reporting rules and changes affecting immigrant households. Beginning this year, some recipients may need to complete at least 80 hours of work, volunteer service, or job training each month to maintain benefits.

Residents are encouraged to act now by checking exemption eligibility, exploring free workforce training through Job Ready Illinois, and utilizing local food assistance resources. Individuals needing immediate food support can call 2-1-1 or visit the Greater Chicago Food Depository for nearby pantry locations and benefits assistance.

Help is available, and Cook County remains committed to connecting residents with the resources they need during this transition.

A Meaningful Visit to Dan Ryan Woods

Exploring the Natural Beauty and

History of Dan Ryan Woods

This month, I had the opportunity to attend the Forest Preserve District of Cook County Board meeting at Dan Ryan Woods alongside my fellow commissioners, and it was truly an inspiring experience.

As someone who has spent much of my life serving the residents of Cook County, I am always grateful for opportunities to learn more about the incredible assets that make our communities special. During the visit, I discovered several fascinating facts about Dan Ryan Woods, including that it is home to one of the highest points in the City of Chicago, standing more than 600 feet above sea level. From the top of the hill, visitors can enjoy remarkable views of the Chicago skyline, offering a unique perspective of our city and its surrounding natural beauty.

Walking through the preserve reminded me of how fortunate we are to have spaces like this right here in Cook County. Spanning more than 257 acres, Dan Ryan Woods serves as a valuable resource for residents seeking recreation, relaxation, and a connection to nature. Whether it is families gathering for picnics, individuals enjoying a peaceful walk, or community groups exploring the outdoors, these green spaces enrich the lives of countless residents every day.

What impressed me most was learning about the ongoing work of the Forest Preserve District to preserve these natural landscapes while expanding opportunities for education, wellness, and environmental stewardship. Their commitment to conservation ensures that future generations will continue to enjoy the same beauty and opportunities that we experience today.

As we continue working to build stronger, healthier communities throughout Cook County, it is important that we also invest in and protect our natural resources. Places like Dan Ryan Woods not only provide recreational opportunities, they also contribute to our physical health, mental well-being, and overall quality of life.

I left the meeting with a greater appreciation for the history, beauty, and importance of our forest preserves. I encourage residents throughout the 3rd District and across Cook County to visit Dan Ryan Woods and explore all that it has to offer. You may be surprised by the incredible views, rich history, and sense of peace that can be found just a short distance from home.

I am grateful to the Forest Preserve District of Cook County for hosting us and for their continued dedication to conservation, community engagement, and environmental sustainability. Their work helps ensure that these treasured spaces remain available for generations to come.

A New Chapter in Pediatric Healthcare

Advancing Healthcare for Our Children and Families

One of the greatest responsibilities we have as public servants is ensuring that every resident has access to quality healthcare, especially our children. That is why I was truly honored to attend the Grand Opening of the Pediatric Neurology Program at Insight Hospital and Medical Center alongside dedicated healthcare professionals, community leaders, elected officials, and advocates who share a common goal of improving healthcare access throughout Cook County.

The opening of this new program is a significant milestone for our community. It represents far more than the expansion of medical services. It represents hope, opportunity, and a commitment to ensuring that children and families can receive specialized care closer to home. For many families, accessing pediatric neurological services has often meant navigating long wait times, traveling great distances, and facing unnecessary barriers during already challenging circumstances.

Children living with conditions such as epilepsy, seizure disorders, developmental delays, autism spectrum disorders, and other complex neurological conditions require timely, compassionate, and specialized care. The new Pediatric Neurology Program will help bridge critical gaps in healthcare access while providing families with the support and resources they need right here in our community.

I want to extend my sincere appreciation to Insight Hospital and Medical Center, Dr. Ateeq Haseeb, and the entire medical team whose vision, dedication, and commitment made this program possible. Their investment reflects a deep understanding of the healthcare needs facing our communities and demonstrates what can be achieved when healthcare providers prioritize equity, innovation, and patient-centered care.

I am also grateful for the partnership of my fellow elected officials, healthcare leaders, and community stakeholders who continue to work collaboratively to improve health outcomes across Cook County. Meaningful progress happens when we come together with a shared commitment to serving our residents.

As Chair of the Cook County Health and Hospitals Committee and Vice Chair of the Cook County Health Board of Directors, I remain committed to supporting initiatives that expand healthcare access and address disparities that have impacted under served communities for far too long. Every child deserves the opportunity to grow, learn, and thrive regardless of their ZIP code, background, or circumstances.

The launch of the Pediatric Neurology Program is an important step forward for healthcare equity in Cook County. I look forward to witnessing the positive impact this program will have on children and families for generations to come.

Together, we will continue building healthier communities and creating a future where quality healthcare is accessible to all.

Investing in People,

Strengthening Our Communities

Creating Pathways to

Employment and Opportunity

I had the privilege of attending the Hospitality Hires Chicago Job Fair at the historic Palmer House, where I witnessed firsthand the determination and resilience of individuals from across Chicago who are working to build brighter futures for themselves and their families.

From the moment I arrived, it was clear that this event represented far more than a traditional job fair. The room was filled with hope, ambition, and opportunity. Hundreds of job seekers came prepared with resumes, professional attire, and a genuine desire to connect with employers who could help them take the next step in their careers. It was inspiring to see so many people investing in themselves and taking meaningful steps toward financial stability and long-term success.

One of the most rewarding parts of the day was speaking directly with residents about their goals and aspirations. Many shared stories of perseverance, overcoming personal challenges, changing careers, or simply searching for an opportunity to provide a better life for their loved ones. Their optimism and determination served as a powerful reminder that our communities are filled with talented, hardworking individuals who simply need access to the right opportunities.

I was especially encouraged to learn that many attendees interviewed with employers on the spot, and several even received job offers before leaving the event. Those moments were a testament to the importance of bringing employers and job seekers together in one place. They demonstrated how meaningful partnerships can transform lives by opening doors to stable employment and economic mobility.

Too often, we hear the misconception that people simply do not want to work. My experience at the Hospitality Hires Chicago Job Fair proved exactly the opposite. The reality is that people are eager to work. They want the dignity that comes with earning a paycheck, supporting their families, building careers, and contributing to their communities. What many need is access, opportunity, and organizations willing to invest in their potential.

Events like Hospitality Hires Chicago play a vital role in strengthening our local economy by connecting businesses with talented individuals who are ready to succeed. These initiatives not only help residents secure employment but also strengthen families, reduce economic barriers, and create healthier, more vibrant communities throughout Cook County.

I want to thank the organizers, participating employers, volunteers, and community partners whose dedication made this event possible. Your commitment to workforce development and economic opportunity is making a real difference in the lives of countless residents.

As your Cook County Commissioner, I remain committed to supporting initiatives that expand access to employment, workforce training, and economic opportunity. Together, we can continue building stronger communities by ensuring every resident has the opportunity to achieve success and reach their full potential.

Honoring Service, Sacrifice,

and the Spirit of Community

A Meaningful Tribute to the

 Heroes Who Gave Everything

As I joined residents, veterans, families, community leaders, and elected officials at the 11th Annual Commander Robert Davis Southside Memorial Day Parade, I was reminded of the true meaning of Memorial Day and the importance of coming together to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. It was an inspiring and heartfelt celebration of patriotism, remembrance, and community.

This annual tradition serves as a powerful reminder that the freedoms we enjoy today were secured through the courage, selflessness, and unwavering dedication of generations of servicemen and women who gave their lives in defense of our country. Their sacrifices can never be forgotten, and it is our shared responsibility to ensure their legacy continues to inspire future generations.

I extend my heartfelt appreciation to everyone who helped make this year's parade such a meaningful success. My sincere thanks go to keynote speaker Colonel Dr. Nick Johnson for his inspiring remarks, the incredibly talented soloist Grace Jarmon Harris for her moving performance, Alderman David Moore for his continued leadership, Rev. Claude Hilliard, a proud Montford Point Marine whose service represents an important chapter in our nation's history, Judge Leonard Murray for serving as this year's Grand Marshal, and Kennedi Love for doing an outstanding job as Master of Ceremonies.

What made the day especially memorable was witnessing neighbors, families, veterans, and young people standing together with a shared sense of gratitude and respect. Events like this strengthen the bonds within our community while reminding us that honoring our nation's heroes is a responsibility we all share.

The Commander Robert Davis Southside Memorial Day Parade continues to be a cherished tradition because it celebrates not only those who served, but also the resilience and unity of our South Side communities. It provides an opportunity for us to reflect on the values of courage, sacrifice, and service while expressing our appreciation to the military families whose loved ones gave everything for our nation.

I am grateful to everyone who attended, volunteered, participated, and supported this important event. Your presence helped ensure that the memories of our fallen heroes remain alive and that their sacrifices will never be forgotten.

As we look ahead, may we continue to honor those who came before us by serving our communities with compassion, treating one another with dignity and respect, and preserving the values of freedom, unity, and service that they fought to protect. Their legacy lives on through each of us, and together we can ensure that future generations always remember the extraordinary price that was paid for our freedom.
