From celebrating the next generation of leaders through the Provident Scholarship Fund, to honoring extraordinary women at our Unsung Heroine recognition, we continued to uplift the voices and achievements that make our communities stronger. We also worked to ensure residents stayed informed and engaged through important voting initiatives, while supporting families directly with resources like our coat giveaway during the final stretch of winter.
These efforts, along with many more moments of connection and service, reflect our ongoing commitment to meeting people where they are and delivering meaningful change.

Honoring Unsung Heroines in Our Community
Yesterday morning, I had the privilege of attending the Unsung Heroine Awards, a powerful celebration honoring women whose dedication, leadership, and service continue to uplift and transform our communities.
I was especially proud to nominate Tonya Trice as the 3rd District’s Unsung Heroine, in partnership with the Commissioner on Women’s Issues, Myiti Sengstack-Rice. Tonya is a dynamic commercial real estate development leader and economic revitalization strategist whose work is rooted in advancing equitable growth across historically marginalized communities.
Her leadership has been instrumental in revitalizing Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood, where she has helped reduce commercial vacancies, promote local ownership, and attract mission-driven businesses. Through innovative initiatives like the We the People Community Investment Vehicle (CIV), she has empowered residents to collectively invest in neighborhood assets, creating pathways toward generational wealth.
Tonya’s work extends beyond development, she brings together public, private, and philanthropic partners to implement strategies that center resident needs while preserving the identity and culture of the community. With a strong foundation in grassroots organizing and coalition building, she continues to champion economic justice, self-determination, and inclusive growth for longtime residents.
The room was filled with extraordinary women whose contributions often happen quietly but leave a lasting and meaningful impact. It was truly inspiring to witness so many leaders gathered in one space, each making a difference in her own way.
A particularly powerful moment came from the founder, Peggy Montes, whose words lit up the room. At 89 years young, she shared wisdom, strength, and encouragement that resonated deeply with everyone in attendance.
Each woman recognized embodies the very essence of leadership and service. We are grateful for their continued commitment to uplifting others and strengthening our communities.

Celebrating the Life and Impact of Babette Ula Peyton
The life of Babette Ula Peyton stands as a powerful testament to resilience, leadership, and unwavering faith. Born on August 15, 1952, in Chicago, Illinois, Babette was raised on the South Side as the second of five children in a family deeply rooted in service. That foundation helped shape a life defined by purpose, strength, and commitment to others. On February 11, 2026, she passed peacefully at the age of 73, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire.
From an early age, Babette demonstrated a passion for learning and a deep spiritual grounding. Educated at Charles S. Deneen Elementary School and South Shore High School, she accepted Christ early in life and remained steadfast in her faith, later becoming a devoted member of St. James A.M.E. Church. Her intellectual curiosity and discipline led her to master multiple languages, including German, French, Spanish, and Swahili, reflecting both her brilliance and appreciation for global cultures.
Babette’s commitment to service extended beyond her community to her country. In 1973, she enlisted in the United States Army, where she served with distinction as a Polytraumatic Medevac Specialist. Her excellence earned her top ranking in her battalion, and her service took her overseas to West Germany. Even after sustaining a spinal injury during training, she continued to embody courage and perseverance.
Following her military service, Babette pursued higher education with determination, earning a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland University College and a master’s degree from Northwestern University. She went on to make history as the co-founder of Peyton Elevator Company alongside her brother, Reverend Renard Peyton Sr., becoming the first Black woman elevator contractor in the City of Chicago. Her work contributed meaningfully to the city’s infrastructure while breaking barriers in the industry.
Beyond her professional achievements, Babette was a dedicated advocate, mentor, and community leader. Through her involvement in civic organizations and her work with CAN TV, she used her voice to champion justice, education, and empowerment. Her passion for uplifting others was further reflected in her founding of Young Entrepreneurs of the Universe and YEU Veteran Initiatives, which provided economic opportunities and housing pathways for veterans.
Babette’s remarkable journey also included excellence in adaptive sports. As a decorated athlete and certified Level I and Level II archery coach, she earned more than 150 medals in national and international competitions. Her extraordinary accomplishments, including an impressive score of 299 out of 300, demonstrated her resilience and inspired countless individuals facing their own challenges.
Above all, Babette Ula Peyton will be remembered for her compassion, strength, and dedication to others. As a devoted aunt, mentor, and community pillar, her impact will continue to be felt for generations to come. Her life’s work serves as a lasting reminder of what it means to lead with purpose and uplift others along the way.

Partnerships That Strengthen Our Communities
This winter, community members came together in a powerful display of compassion and service during a recent Coat Giveaway, ensuring that residents had access to much-needed winter essentials. As temperatures dropped, the event served as a reminder that collective care and collective action can make a meaningful difference for families across the community. The atmosphere reflected not only generosity, but also a deep commitment to dignity, connection, and uplifting neighbors in times of need.
Local leaders, partners, and advocates joined together with a shared purpose, engaging directly with residents and helping distribute coats and resources to those who needed them most. The presence of Rev. Coverson of the Institute of Positive Living, Goldie Fleming of EDDR Workforce Development, and Fawn Smith of Comcast highlighted the strength of community-rooted leadership and the importance of organizations working hand in hand.
The event also welcomed Caileen, representing State Representative Kam Buckner, further demonstrating the value of collaboration between elected officials, community organizations, and workforce development partners. These partnerships continue to expand access to resources and create opportunities that support long-term community stability.
Events like this Coat Giveaway reflect what is possible when people come together with intention and care. They serve as a powerful reminder that through unity, service, and strong partnerships, communities can continue to grow stronger, more connected, and more resilient.

Advancing Awareness on CTE

Protecting the Future of Youth Athletics
Today, I joined Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, my colleague Commissioner Tara Stamps, along with healthcare professionals, advocates, and community leaders, to elevate an urgent and growing public health conversation surrounding Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) and the long-term risks associated with repeated head trauma in sports. This issue is not just about athletics, it is about the long-term health and well-being of our young people, our families, and our communities. I am proud to stand alongside Commissioner Stamps as she leads an important effort to introduce a Cook County resolution focused on strengthening education, expanding prevention strategies, and advancing meaningful protections for athletes, especially youth participating in organized sports. Her leadership reflects a deep commitment to ensuring that awareness is paired with action, and that we are proactive in addressing the risks associated with repeated head injuries.
Sports continue to serve as a powerful foundation for youth development, teaching discipline, teamwork, leadership, and resilience. For many young people across Cook County, athletics open doors to opportunity, mentorship, and personal growth. However, as research continues to uncover the lasting neurological effects of repeated head trauma, we must be equally committed to ensuring that safety evolves alongside opportunity. This means investing in education for parents and coaches, strengthening concussion protocols, supporting early detection efforts, and creating environments where young athletes can thrive without compromising their long-term health.
As Chair of the Cook County Health and Hospitals Committee, I remain deeply committed to advancing policies and initiatives that prioritize brain health and athlete safety. This includes supporting efforts that increase access to medical resources, promote awareness around concussion symptoms, and ensure that organizations at every level are equipped with the tools needed to respond effectively. Protecting our youth requires collaboration, from policymakers and healthcare providers to schools, coaches, and families, and today’s conversation is a critical step in moving that work forward.
We have a responsibility to ensure that every young person who steps onto a field, court, or track can do so safely, confidently, and with the full support of a system that prioritizes their well-being. This is about safeguarding futures, strengthening communities, and making sure that the benefits of sports are never overshadowed by preventable risks. I encourage everyone to stay informed, engage in this important dialogue, and take the time to learn more about the steps we are taking to protect the next generation of athletes by watching the full press conference here: https://www.youtube.com/live/tRk42Y40v6M?si=dOJ-xvAFhpcSMKdi

A Proud Day Across Chicago’s 3rd District
This Election Day, I had the honor of starting my morning in the most meaningful way—casting my vote alongside my wife, Cheryl, at Kennicott Park. Standing side by side, we were reminded that voting is not just a civic duty, but a powerful expression of our shared values, our hopes, and our responsibility to one another as a community.
In times like these, it is more important than ever to exercise our right to choose. Voting is the foundation of our democracy, and each ballot cast represents a voice that deserves to be heard. It is through this collective action that we shape the future of our neighborhoods, our city, and generations to come.
Throughout the day, I traveled across the 3rd District—from Kenwood Academy to Thurgood Marshall Library, Coleman Library, the South Side YMCA, the Loop Super Center, and even a quick stop at Manny’s Deli—connecting with residents who showed up with purpose and pride.
What I witnessed was nothing short of inspiring. Chicagoans stepping forward, standing in line, encouraging one another, and participating in the democratic process with determination and unity. It filled me with immense pride to see our communities engaged, energized, and committed to making their voices count.
To everyone who voted today, thank you. Your participation strengthens our democracy and reflects the very best of who we are as a city. Let us continue to stay engaged, uplift one another, and carry this spirit of civic responsibility forward.

Honoring Leaders Driving Community Impact
Last week, I had the distinct pleasure of joining community leaders, local businesses, and residents at the Old Town Merchants and Residents Association (OTMRA) Mixer—an event that truly reflected the strength and spirit of Chicago’s neighborhoods. Gatherings like this serve as a powerful reminder that meaningful progress begins with connection. When individuals from diverse backgrounds come together with a shared purpose, it creates space for collaboration, innovation, and collective growth.
The energy in the room was both inspiring and affirming. Conversations flowed around ideas, partnerships, and the continued commitment to uplifting our communities. It is through these moments of engagement that we strengthen the foundation of our neighborhoods—ensuring they remain vibrant, inclusive, and full of opportunity for all who live and work within them.
I was especially honored to stand alongside a group of remarkable leaders whose work continues to shape and strengthen our communities in meaningful ways. Among those in attendance were Marcy Huttas, President of OTMRA; Michele Dreczynski of the Near North Unity Program; Steve Deliglliannis of Byline Bank; Adem Aluka, Founder of Youth For A Better Future; Sayuri Daley, Founder of Sake Flight; Katrina Miller of New Gallery; and Charlie Branda of Art on Sedgwick.
Each of these individuals represents the very best of community leadership—bringing vision, dedication, and a deep commitment to service. Their efforts not only support local businesses and organizations, but also foster a sense of belonging and shared responsibility that is essential to long-term neighborhood growth.
Events like the OTMRA Mixer underscore the importance of partnership and presence. By continuing to invest in these relationships and support one another, we can build stronger, more connected communities across Chicago. I look forward to continuing this important work alongside so many passionate and committed leaders.

150 Years of Relentless Impact
Yesterday’s visit to the UCAN Relentless facilities was more than a tour, it was a powerful reminder of what intentional, community-driven work looks like when it is centered on young people. Walking through the space and engaging with the team, it was clear that UCAN is not just providing services, but creating an environment where youth feel seen, supported, and empowered to succeed. Every conversation, every program, and every interaction reflected a deep commitment to meeting young people where they are and guiding them toward brighter futures.
For more than 150 years, UCAN has stood as a pillar of support for youth across Chicago, particularly those navigating trauma and adversity. Through a comprehensive approach that includes foster care, education, mental health services, and violence prevention, the organization continues to transform lives and strengthen communities. What stood out most during the visit was the unwavering dedication of the staff and leadership, individuals who show up every day with passion and purpose to ensure no young person is left behind.
UCAN is more than an organization, it is a village. It is a network of care, resilience, and opportunity that is actively shaping the future of Chicago’s youth. Experiences like this reinforce the importance of investing in organizations that are doing the work on the ground and making a measurable difference in the lives of our residents.
