Nourishing Chicago’s Future: My Conversation with Dion Dawson

Building Health and Hope with Dion’s Chicago Dream

Recently, I had the privilege of sitting down with Dion Dawson, founder of Dion’s Chicago Dream, to discuss his powerful mission of uplifting communities across Chicago. Our conversation was a reminder that real change begins when compassion meets action.

Dion’s Chicago Dream is tackling some of the most urgent challenges in our neighborhoods—food insecurity, unemployment, and the lack of economic opportunity. Through programs like Dream Deliveries, his team provides fresh produce directly to families’ homes every week, ensuring that healthy food is accessible to those who need it most. The organization is also creating jobs, empowering residents, and working to close the gap between need and opportunity.

As we talked, I was deeply inspired by Dion’s commitment to service. He is not only feeding families but also restoring dignity, pride, and hope in communities that have too often been overlooked. When grocery stores disappear and resources become scarce, leaders like Dion step up to fill the void with innovation and heart.

I often say that health is wealth and food is medicine. These words ring true when you see the impact of initiatives like Dion’s Chicago Dream. Together, we can ensure that every Cook County resident has access to nutritious food, meaningful work, and a pathway to thrive.

Let us continue to support organizations that are transforming lives and redefining what community care looks like in Cook County.

Honoring Legacy, Culture, and Community:

A Celebration of Hispanic and Latine Heritage Month

Celebrating the Richness of Hispanic and

Latine Heritage in Cook County

This month, I had the great honor of standing alongside my Cook County colleagues and President Toni Preckwinkle as we brought Hispanic and Latine Heritage Month to a close. The celebration recognized three extraordinary institutions whose work continues to shape the cultural fabric of our region — the National Museum of Mexican Art, the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture, and the Ensemble Español Spanish Dance Theater.

These three cultural powerhouses represent the very essence of what it means to preserve and share the spirit of heritage. Through vibrant exhibitions, captivating performances, and transformative community programs, they ensure that future generations understand and celebrate the contributions of Hispanic and Latine people to our shared history. Their dedication serves as a living testament to the strength, diversity, and creativity that define Cook County’s cultural landscape.

Hispanic and Latine Heritage Month, first established in 1968 as a week-long celebration and expanded in 1988 to a month-long observance from September 15 to October 15, is a time for reflection and gratitude. The dates were chosen to align with the independence anniversaries of several Latin American nations — Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico, and Chile — acknowledging the deep historical connections that bind these nations and their descendants in the United States.

This annual observance is more than a celebration; it is an affirmation of identity, resilience, and unity. It highlights the countless ways Hispanic and Latine communities have contributed to every corner of American life — from art and education to science, public service, and social justice. Their voices have shaped our democracy, their artistry has enriched our culture, and their leadership continues to move our nation forward.

As we reflect on this month’s festivities, I extend heartfelt congratulations to our honorees for their tireless commitment to cultural preservation and education. I also thank President Toni Preckwinkle for her unwavering leadership and advocacy for inclusivity, representation, and equity across all communities in Cook County. Together, we continue to honor a legacy that reminds us that culture is not just something we celebrate — it is something we live, every day.

Honoring Women, Uplifting Communities: The Love Purse Initiative

Continuing a Legacy of Love and Service

What a powerful afternoon filled with purpose, unity, and compassion. Although I was unable to attend in person, I was deeply moved to see members of my staff proudly represent our office at this year’s Love Purse event, a remarkable initiative dedicated to empowering women throughout Cook County.

Love Purse is more than a charitable drive. It is a movement of care and dignity. Each carefully assembled purse contains essential care items such as hygiene products, personal necessities, and uplifting notes. Together, these items remind women who are overcoming challenges, whether homelessness, domestic violence, or financial hardship, that they are seen, valued, and supported. Every purse becomes a message of hope, strength, and renewal.

A Gathering of Leadership and Purpose

This year’s event brought together an extraordinary group of women leaders and public servants, including Commissioner Tara Stamps, Senator Kim Du Buclet, and many other advocates who share a deep commitment to uplifting women and strengthening our communities. Their collaboration and compassion embody the very best of Cook County’s spirit, one of partnership, empowerment, and collective care.

Honoring the Vision of Clerk Karen Yarbrough

A special thank you goes to Cook County Clerk Monica Gordon and her incredible team for carrying forward this beautiful tradition. Through their leadership and dedication, the legacy of the late Clerk Karen Yarbrough continues to shine brightly. Karen Yarbrough’s vision was one rooted in service, compassion, and community empowerment. Her belief that every woman deserves to feel loved and valued lives on through every purse shared and every life touched.

I truly believe Clerk Yarbrough is looking down with a smile, proud to see her dream continuing to grow, one act of kindness at a time.

Building a County of Care

Events like the Love Purse initiative remind us that government is not just about policy, it is about people. When we come together to uplift others, we build stronger, more compassionate communities where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. I am grateful to all who continue to turn compassion into action and to those who keep Clerk Yarbrough’s legacy alive through service, generosity, and love.

Voices of Excellence: Leo High School

Choir Lifts Every Voice at Cook County

Leo High School Choir Inspires

Cook County with the Power of Song

On October 23, 2025, the Leo High School Choir filled the halls of Cook County with a spirit that could only be described as electric. Their visit was not just a performance; it was an experience that united everyone present in celebration, reflection, and pure joy.

As the choir entered, their presence radiated warmth and youthful energy. Staff and visitors alike paused in admiration, captivated by the confidence and grace these talented students carried with them. When the first notes of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” echoed through the room, a reverent hush fell over the crowd. Within moments, the harmonies swelled, transforming the space into a place of shared inspiration.

The song, often called the Black National Anthem, is a timeless symbol of resilience, hope, and unity. The Leo Choir’s rendition honored that legacy beautifully. Their voices rose in perfect harmony, carrying messages of perseverance and pride that resonated deeply with everyone in attendance.

A Moment of Pride for the Community

This visit from the Leo High School Choir reminded everyone of the extraordinary talent thriving in Chicago’s South Side. Their music reflects not only artistic excellence but also the heart and soul of a community grounded in faith, education, and service.

Founded in 1926, Leo Catholic High School as a long tradition of nurturing young men into leaders academically, spiritually, and creatively. The choir, under the guidance of their dedicated directors and mentors, continues to carry that legacy forward, performing at events across the city and representing the school with unmatched grace and professionalism.

Earlier this year, the Leo High School Choir gained national attention through their powerful journey on America’s Got Talent, where they showcased their extraordinary gifts to millions of viewers. Their achievements continue to make their school and community proud, proving that with discipline, teamwork, and heart, anything is possible.

Celebrating the Power of Art and Education

The Cook County Board was honored to host these gifted young artists and to witness firsthand how the arts continue to enrich and inspire our communities. Music, at its core, has the power to bridge generations and backgrounds to remind us that even in challenging times, hope sings loudest.

As their final notes lingered in the air, one could see smiles, tears, and heartfelt applause filling the room. It was a powerful reminder that leadership is not always found behind a desk or podium; sometimes it is found in the voices of young people lifting others through song.

The Leo High School Choir’s visit will not soon be forgotten. Their performance left a mark not only on those who attended but on the spirit of Cook County itself.

Spreading Holiday Joy in October:

A Celebration of Hope and Community

October Wonderland: The Spirit of Christmas

Shines for Cancer Awareness

This year’s October Wonderland: A Christmas for Cancer Awareness event was a powerful reminder that compassion knows no calendar. Although the holidays are still weeks away, our community came together in the true spirit of giving, bringing warmth, joy, and love to children and families impacted by cancer.

The event transformed the Bronzeville Health Center into a festive wonderland filled with laughter, holiday music, and the sparkle of excitement in every child’s eyes. Families gathered to receive toys, enjoy sweet treats, and connect with caring neighbors who believe in lifting each other up. For many, it was more than a celebration; it was a moment of hope and healing.

A Community United in Kindness

This heartfelt event would not have been possible without the leadership and vision of Sharon Preston of Flags of the Heart, whose dedication to serving others continues to inspire everyone around her. Sharon’s passion for giving back and her tireless efforts to support families battling cancer are a true testament to the power of one person’s commitment to community care.

We also extend deep gratitude to our outstanding partners Culver’s, Cook County Health, and Toys for Tots for their generosity and unwavering support. Their partnership ensured that every child left with not just a toy, but a memory filled with joy and belonging.

A special thank-you goes to the compassionate staff of the Bronzeville Health Center, who went above and beyond to help distribute toys, greet families, and create an atmosphere of warmth and celebration throughout the day.

The True Meaning of the Season

Together, we proved that the Christmas spirit doesn’t wait for December. It lives in every moment when neighbors come together, lend a helping hand, and share kindness with those who need it most.

As we continue to honor Cancer Awareness through community-driven compassion, may this event remind us that love, hope, and generosity can light the way, not just for one season, but all year long.

Building Brotherhood: A Conversation on Leadership and Legacy

Shaping the Future Together:

Reflections from the Brotherhood Round Table

This past Saturday, I had the privilege of participating in an extraordinary gathering of civic leaders, CEOs, and elected officials at the Brotherhood Round Table. The event, hosted by Onyx Strategic Partners, brought together an inspiring group of individuals committed to advancing our communities through integrity, mentorship, and service.

The atmosphere was filled with intellect, purpose, and shared commitment as we exchanged ideas on leadership, accountability, and collective progress. It was a powerful reminder that when we come together with open hearts and a common vision, we create spaces where meaningful change can truly take root.

Leadership Beyond Titles

As I reflected on our conversation, I was reminded that leadership is not defined by position or age, it is defined by impact. True leadership is measured by how we uplift others, how we build bridges of opportunity, and how we empower the next generation to lead with confidence and courage.

Our dialogue touched on the importance of manhood, mentorship, and legacy, and how these values shape the character of our communities. We spoke about the need for authenticity, accountability, and collaboration among leaders, particularly as we work to build a foundation strong enough to support those who will follow in our footsteps.

A Brotherhood of Leaders

I was honored to share the stage with an inspiring group of changemakers, including Garth Walker, State Representative La Shawn K. Ford, Sharif Walker, Kaleb Deer, William R. Riley, Jawaharial Williams, Ayesha Jaco, Obari Cartman, Rodney Brown, Claude Robinson, Lamar Maine Flowers, and Kanaan Deer. Each of these individuals brought valuable insights and a deep passion for community empowerment.

Their dedication to mentorship and service reinforces my belief that real progress is not achieved in isolation. It is built through collaboration, shared purpose, and a genuine desire to uplift others. I am grateful to each of them for reminding me of the strength that comes from unity and the power that emerges when we work together toward a common goal.

Looking Ahead

The Brotherhood Round Table was more than a meeting, it was a movement toward building a stronger, more connected community for all. The lessons shared and the stories exchanged reaffirmed my commitment to leading with integrity and compassion.

As we continue this work, I am filled with optimism about what we can accomplish together. When leaders unite with empathy, honesty, and accountability, we not only transform our neighborhoods but also inspire a new generation to carry the torch forward.

Together, we are shaping a future rooted in collaboration, equity, and hope.
