Art of Recovery Event at Mercy Hospital

On September 20th, Mercy Hospital of Folsom hosted its first Art of Recovery Conference, and HART of Folsom was delighted to be included! Board President, Liz Ekenstedt, Board Director, Lilli Duval, and HART’s dedicated volunteer, Janna Le Page represented HART at the event.

Many thanks to Rebecca Harris, the event coordinator, for bringing together a full line-up of expert guest speakers and providing multiple networking opportunities.  Representatives from detox, residential, and outpatient treatment facilities were present, as well as those who offer sober living environments, and resources for mental health, harm reduction, and the unhoused. The event was most informative and lively! We hope to see Art of Recovery return next year!

Monthly Volunteer Highlight

Michelle Nation is a shining example of community spirit, who not only attends but also works for Disciples Church. Her journey with HART of Folsom began when her church graciously opened its doors to host guests for the winter shelter. Initially, Michelle dedicated her time to delivering meals from local restaurants, but as the seasons changed, so did her role and commitment. When the original site coordinator stepped down, Michelle stepped up, embracing the challenge and now dedicating nearly every evening to support those in need during their stay.

“It's an opportunity to feel like I am making a difference and doing something to help,” she shares, embodying the essence of compassion that fuels HART. Each week, she relishes the chance to share meals and forge meaningful connections with the guests. Michelle's story is not just about one individual’s commitment; it’s a heartfelt invitation for others to recognize their potential to impact lives, reminding us all that together, we can create a ripple effect of kindness and hope within our community.

For Michelle, engaging with HART has been a profoundly transformative journey that has not only reshaped her perspective but also strengthened her family's bond through shared purpose. Initially intimidated by the prospect of volunteering, she discovered that stepping beyond her comfort zone opened the door to invaluable connections with individuals whose lives are marked by challenges vastly different from her own. Now, with her children aged 6 and 8 actively participating alongside her, Michelle experiences the joy of witnessing her family grow through empathy and service.

She passionately believes in HART's mission, recognizing that community-driven support is essential in addressing the complex issue of homelessness—an issue that requires a collective effort to inspire genuine change. HART of Folsom embodies this spirit of collaboration, and together, they strive to make a meaningful impact. Will you join Michelle and her family as catalysts for change, helping to create a brighter future for our community?
