Join the worldwide discernment about women’s roles in the Catholic Church Did you know that during the listening stage of the current global Synod, the issue of “rethinking women’s participation” emerged as critical and urgent across nearly every report submitted to the Vatican? Join Catholics from across Western Washington on May 6 from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. for Receive Her in the Lord, a synodal thematic forum on women’s participation in the Church. At this gathering—which will include opportunities for prayer, relationship building, reflection, and synodal discernment—we will reflect together on the fruits of the first phase of the global synod and explore where the Holy Spirit is calling us as Catholics in Western Washington to move on the theme of women in the Church. Register online at https://bit.ly/receiveher. (P.S. This event is not just for women! Women’s participation in the life of the Church impacts all of the people of God; all are welcome at this event.)

ST VINCENT DE PAUL THANKS YOU A young mother worked full time doing janitorial work. However, after being hospitalized with a high risk pregnancy, this neighbor stayed home on bed rest and could not return to her job. When her food stamp card was stolen and emptied of its benefits, she was further challenged financially. The woman called the St Vincent de Paul Helpline (206-767-6449). With your support, we offered enough assistance to ease her burden while she awaited the birth of her child. Information, Jo Ann Wiesner, 206-291-4012 or wiesnerjo@gmail.com.

THANK YOU! The people of St. James Cathedral changed lives this Lent through Catholic Relief Services’ Rice Bowl, and we want to say THANK YOU! Don’t forget to turn in your CRS Rice Bowl the next time you are at Mass, at the Parish Office, or donate online at crsricebowl.org/donate.

VIGIL FOR THE HOMELESS Without shelter, people die: 82 women, men, and children have perished outside, in public, or by violence already this year. This past Wednesday, WHEEL (Women’s Housing, Equality and Enhancement League) stood vigil at City Hall to remember those 82 people, including the 32 homeless people who died in March alone. In solidarity, St. James Cathedral remembered those same people at this past Wednesday’s 12:10pm Mass.

CAPPELLA ROMANA CONCERT: IVAN MOODY – GREEK LITURGY Friday, April 28 at 7:30pm. Greek Liturgy was written in 2016 at the request of Dr. Peter Jermihov, who will conduct these Northwest premiere performances. Commissioned by Dr. Jermihov's Society of St. Romanos in Chicago, Moody's work strives to align his compositional gifts with the chant traditions that have come before. He writes, “If we treat the Church's chant traditions as a life-giving spring, we can find the courage to work with them, to become co-creators; they are not there to imprison us or to be endlessly reproduced with no understanding. And in finding that courage we can become contributors to the rich and varied beauty of liturgical art, aiming always to glorify God.” More info and tickets ($5-$53) at https://cappellaromana.org/concert/moodyliturgy/. A limited number of pay-what-you-can parishioner passes are available at the parish office reception desk, or contact the music office at musicoffice@stjames-cathedral.org or 206-382-4874.

Our concern is to see that the environment is cleaner, purer, and preserved, and to take care of nature so that it takes care of us.” Pope Francis, from Earth Day 2021

EVERY CITIZENSHIP STORY IS UNIQUE As a refugee, Sofia (not her real name) suffered significant trauma in her birth country. This trauma led to serious cognitive decline preventing her from learning and recalling information needed to pass the English and US civics tests required to become a US citizen. Immigrant Assistance’s legal services offered the substantial time, effort and expertise she and her doctor needed to prepare a successful request for a medical exception waiving these test requirements. Our services provided the critical assistance she needed to become a US citizen. With the stability and peace of mind that citizenship provides, she can now focus on her health and building a better life here with her children. If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a US citizen, we can help. Information, Patrick Suhrbier, psuhrbier@stjames-cathedral.org or Laura Murton, lmurton@stjames-cathedral.org.
