LAAC Advocacy Update

As we reported last month, the State Bar is engaging in a process to evaluate the   California Commission on Access to Justice and the   Legal Services Trust Fund Commission

The Access Commission Working Group will include 9 people from the Access Commission, State Bar Board of Trustees, legislature, and Judicial Council, and the first meeting will be on October 16 in Sacramento.

The LSTFC Working Group will include 14 people from the LSTFC, the Board of Trustees, legislature, Judicial Council, current IOLTA-funded organizations, non-IOLTA-funded legal nonprofits, and LAAC.  The first meeting will be on October 15 in Sacramento.

LAAC will make sure to keep you informed of all the meeting dates and opportunities to be involved. We will also continue to provide opportunities for our community to gather and discuss future proposals to change the IOLTA statute.

Cy Pres Case Update

As many of you know, a case addressing the validity of cy pres awards is now up with the US Supreme Court -  Gaos v. Frank , Supreme Court Case No. 17-961. LAAC, along with many national partners, filed an amicus brief in support of the doctrine of cy pres.  Frank did not focus on cy pres awards to legal aid organizations specifically in his brief,  but rather he argued that all cy pres awards are invalid.

While length restrictions did not allow for the individual sign-ons of LAAC member programs as in prior cases, LAAC signed on to an amicus brief in support of cy pres along with NLADA, APBCo, the National Association of IOLTA Programs, the Chicago Bar Foundation, and Equal Justice Works. We will keep you updated as things progress. If you'd like more information, please contact Lorin Kline at LKline@LAAConline.org

LAAC's  Self-Care Corner Tip
for Legal Aid Parents

Many legal aid attorneys who are also in the caregiving role for young children (as parents, aunties or uncles, or guardians) struggle daily with with the drama of getting their young children out the door and then turn to work that can be just as stressful.

There are a lot of parenting books that can offer tips, but Salena, LAAC's ED, recommends  No Drama Discipline , which you can also get from your local public library or as an audiobook for your commute. "What I like about No Drama Discipline is that the authors recognize the need for adult self-care so that we can better interact with our kids. I'm so tired of the daily fight over putting on shoes, and the strategies in this book may actually help me be a better parent AND arrive to work not already frazzled."

(Psst... skip the monthly cost of audiobooks and get audiobooks and ebooks for free with your library card by downloading the Libby and/ or Hoopla app on your smartphone!)
