Discussing Cybercrime,Scams, and Identity Theft in Macon
|
|
At any time, any one of us can become a victim of a cybercrime, scam, or identity thief. Victims commonly experience financial losses as well as loss of reputation and even property. As of last year, Georgia led the nation in identity theft reports to the
Federal Trade Commission. As part of the National Identity Theft and Victims Network (NITVAN), Georgia Watch leads the
Georgia Identity Theft and Cybercrime Coalition (GITCC) and has produced resources to help consumers learn how to minimize their risk of becoming victims of such crimes.
On September 18, 2019, we collaborated with the Better Business Bureau of Central Georgia to host a two-hour training for service providers interested in learning how to protect their communities from cybercrime, scams, and identity theft. Participants included representatives of local banks and credit unions, the Better Business Bureau, and local law enforcement. We thank the Better Business Bureau for hosting this training and look forward to continuing our efforts to arm Georgia consumers with the tools to protect themselves from cybercrime, scams, and identity theft.
If you are interested in learning more or joining the GITCC, please contact
bhaynes@georgiawatch.org for additional information.
