This has been a whirlwind of a week and our thoughts are with all of the families affected by Hurricane Michael across the southeast. Mother Nature sure has given us a crazy Fall season so far. The transition to cooler days is welcomed by everyone, especially our farmers. You'll start seeing new produce appear on their tables, including a variety of greens, root veggies and much more. Be sure to enjoy peppers and eggplant before they're gone for the season (although we hope the first frost is still a ways off).

Tomorrow we're excited to join Durham County 4-H and  NC WARN  as we come together to assemble flood buckets and hygiene kits for our NC family affected by Hurricane Florence. The supplies will be taken to Wilmington, Lumberton and other areas in the Eastern part of our state. Cooperative Extension centers in those areas will distribute the supplies to families who are recovering from the storm.  We will provide the 5 gallon buckets and Ziploc bags.  We need YOU to provide the following NEW items in their original packaging to help fill our buckets:
  • Travel sized toiletries, including toothbrush/toothpaste, soap, shampoo, deodorant, shaving cream/razors, combs and washcloths
  • Scouring pads, scrub brushes and all-purpose sponges
  • Dish detergent
  • Household cleaners
  • 33 galloon trash bags
  • Heavy-duty gloves
  • Dust masks
  • Eyeglass protectors
  • Terry towels
Please bring your donations to the Info Table and join the teenagers from NC Warn and 4-H in assembling the buckets. Thank you in advance for your generosity!

If you're looking for a fun family event next Tuesday, October 16,  join us for  Neighbors Feeding Neighbors 2018 ! This annual event is sponsored by the  Durham CROP Hunger Walk  and Durham Congregations in Action. The event raises money to help people in poverty through local and global relief programs by having the Durham community come together for an enjoyable meal on World Hunger Day. The Durham Farmers' Market receives support for our Double Bucks program through this event so be sure to join us. Double Bucks matches SNAP/EBT transactions at the market up to $10, ensuring that community members have increased access to fresh, local food. For more information, check out this link.

Also, please mark your calendars for two exciting events! On October 27, we'll host our annual Vendor Halloween Costume Contest. And on November 10, we're hosting our first annual Silent Auction to raise funds for some of your favorite market programs, including the Sprouts Kid's Club, Double Bucks, and more. Save the date and come prepared to complete your holiday shopping while also supporting the market that you love.

Finally, as a reminder, below is our market schedule:
  • The Wednesday Market is closed for the season. Thank you for your support!
  • Saturday Main Season Market runs through November 17 from 8:00 am-12:00 pm.
  • Pre-Thanksgiving Holiday Market will be held on Tuesday, November 20 from 3:00-5:00 pm. The Saturday Market will be closed on November 24.
  • Saturday Winter Market begins on December 1 from 10:00 am-12:00 pm.
See you tomorrow!

Sincerely,
Mary Yost

Become a friend of the
Durham Farmers' Market!
The Durham Farmers' Market has been a community destination in downtown Durham since 1999 thanks to YOU, our loyal customers and supporters. Over the years we have grown the market and continue to provide Durham with an event that nourishes the soul of our wonderful city.  You may not know that the market operates primarily off of the weekly stall fees from our farmers and artisans. Despite this modest budget, we are constantly working to make fresh and healthy food accessible to our entire Durham community.  We want to continue expanding the offerings of our market and need your help to make this happen.  The Friend of Durham Farmers' Market program provides an opportunity for you to invest in the future of the market by making recurring or one-time contributions via PayPal or check. Examples of how we will use the funds include expanding our children's programming, continuing our outreach efforts to underserved communities in Durham, and developing our nutrition education programs. We invite you to invest in your market. Please continue stimulating our local food economy and join our effort to build a stronger, healthier Durham. Thank you!

We are so excited to be a part of the Durham Farmers' Market community and look forward to meeting you all  this Saturday. We are a husband and wife duo and have been building our business out of our home for almost 5 years.

We are so pleased to offer you a rotating selection of breads and seasonal pastries (and some staples that we have all year!) as well as cookies, large pies and cakes for whatever your weekend needs might be. We offer both sweet and savory items which change as new fruits and vegetables come in season.

Meadow Lane Farm
We are busy trying to save our hay crop and get the large round bales covered before the heavy rain returns this week.  Our animals need lots of quality forage and hay to get through the winter months. Since we are forage based,  they have had plenty of "sun, water, and grass" this year!
Squash blossoms will be at the market this week along with eggplant, new crop of okra, fall squash, along with cucumbers from the greenhouse...all certified USDA organic. Our natural MEATS are in abundant supply....21-day dry-aged ANGUS BEEF, BERKSHIRE X PORK, Dorset LAMB, and BOER Chevon (goat meat). STEAKS, ROASTS, GROUND, SAUSAGES, organ meat (kidney, liver, heart), DOG Knuckle bones, MARROW Bones, Brisket, and much more.

Mario's Organic POPCORN is back at the market... great for the cooler evenings.

Thank you for continued support of our family farm. See you on Saturday at the market!

The Spicy Hermit
The Spicy Hermit crafts traditional and seasonal kimchi using fresh produce from local farms (including those at Durham Farmers' Market!) and time-honored fermentation methods. What is kimchi? Simply put, kimchi is a delicious product resulting from seemingly magical alchemy of vegetables and spices. All kimchi from The Spicy Hermit is raw, gluten-free, and vegan, and manufactured at each produce's seasonal peak.

Our current offerings are:  green cabbage and butternut squash. Come early to get best selection! Try them as a side dish, like pickles, or as seasoning for dips or sauces. We are still patiently waiting for the greens to grow for our other varieties.

Eunice Chang
Sunset Ridge Buffalo Farm
Good friend Joseph Harris will be subbing for Jack this coming Saturday at DFM. He will have a good selection of delicious and nutritious bison meat available. So stop by and see him and select something for a weeknight meal or for a gathering of friends or family over the weekend.

Hurtgen Meadows Farm
Finally! It looks like we will get some cooler weather, which should help the fall crops "take off" and grow in the gardens.

PRODUCE
On Saturday we will be bringing arugula, eggplant, potatoes, bell peppers, sweet lunchbox peppers, hot peppers, fall squash, garlic and some of our beautiful dahlias.

EGGS
We'll have fresh eggs from our free-ranging happy chickens that are fed organic grains.

JAMS & JELLIES
Current varieties available include peach, pear, kiwi, strawberry, sweet onion and pepper jam.  Our award winning jams and jellies are made in small batches using local ingredients. Our family has made jams for multiple generations and we are happy to share with our customers.

All of Hurtgen Meadows produce, plants, fruits and flowers are naturally grown using sustainable practices - no synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers are ever used on our farm. We'll see you at the market!

Melina's Fresh Pasta
We will be at market this Saturday with a variety of fresh pasta! We will have everyone's  favorite ravioli, including Pumpkin - new for the season! Or pick up  one of our take-and-bake lasagnas for an easy and delicious meal.

Chapel Hill Creamery
We recently sent five cheeses to the NC State Fair and won four first place ribbons and one second place ribbon. Grading is on a point system for technical and aesthetic scores. Soon we will get to see the sheets for exactly how we scored. Other exciting news from the farm is that we bought a new tractor that will make many of our chores much easier. We scrape the feeding lane every day and compost that with wood chips and turn it until it can be spread onto the pastures. Also Allison bought herself a hoof trimming shoot which will be safer for her and for the cows. Hoof care is another important part of cow care and she does a good job with it.

Saturday cheeses are Calvander, Dairyland Farmers, Hickory Grove, Danziger, and a little Carolina Moon. Calvander is a great cheese to have on hand for cooking, salads, or snacking. It's been aged 8 months and has a wonderful complex flavor. It's firm enough to grate but smooth enough to enjoy with a glass of red wine. Use it for pasta, a ham and cheese sandwich with chutney, or kale salads with lemon vinaigrette and toasted pecans.

We make Dairyland Farmers every week and it is moist and tangy. It's a staple at our house for Mexican dishes like tacos with our Chorizo sausage or for our recipe for Market Salad with apples. Hickory  Grove and Danziger are both washed rind cheeses but made differently for different textures. Carolina Moon is a Camembert style and our Jersey cow milk makes it full of flavor.

Our ground beef is back! Our beef is tender and flavorful from our grazing herd and makes a delicious meatloaf or stuffed peppers. Sausages  include Mild Italian, Hot Italian, Bratwurst, Polish, Chorizo, Mild Country Breakfast, and Maple and Sage Breakfast Links.  We also have ground pork, bacon, and bacon bits.  All our pork is from our pigs who drink the nutritious whey from cheese making as part of our focus on sustainability.

See you Saturday and don't forget your cooler!

Honeygirl Meadery
Honeygirl Meadery is a small urban meadery in downtown Durham, making an ancient craft beverage for modern days. Mead is essentially wine made from honey, with many different styles that include additions of fruits, flowers and herbs. Our meads are hand-crafted libations made in small batches, using both local and global true source honey, local fruits, herbs and flowers. They are naturally gluten free. Our downtown Durham Tasting Room is open on Fridays from 3-7 pm, Saturdays from 1-6 pm and Sundays from 1-5 pm.

This week we will be sampling: our BRAND NEW Mango Habanero Mead, a lightly sweet mead made with earthy clover honey, tropical mangos and infused with spicy habanero peppers.

We will also be sampling the newest release of our Orange Blossom Mead, a lightly sweet traditional mead made with orange blossom honey.

And we will also be sampling our Apple Cyser Mead , this is the mead version of a hard cider, and ours is a dry-style cyser with crisp, tart apple highlights. A blend of four apple varieties from western NC contributes both tart and sweet cider notes.

We will also have bottles available of our Strawberry Mead , made with local strawberries and NC wildflower honey ; and our Strawbanero Mead, a lightly sweet mead with fresh strawberries and a spicy kick .

Maple Spring Gardens
The time has come for us to top our Brussels sprout plants, thereby encouraging them to focus their energy towards fattening up the sprouts instead of growing ever upwards. Much like pulling off garlic scapes in the spring, this farm chore yields a tasty once-a year crop: Brussels sprout tops! Sauteed or roasted, these guys are delicious in their own right and are tasty preview of Brussels sprouts to come.
In addition to Brussels sprout tops, we will have baby ginger, lettuce, kale, collards, salad greens, broccoli, beans, sweet peppers, green bell peppers, eggplant, potatoes, radishes, beets, winter squash, parsley, cilantro, lemongrass, and nettles.

What says Fall better than colorful leaves and clear, cool days?! Durham leaves have not turned yet, but in other places they are gold and red and orange. Here's an image of Zion National Park with its golden aspen leaves on show.

I have a wide selection of photographic greeting cards featuring iconic spots around  Durham, the OBX, Flowers, Fantasy, Animals, Whimsy, and astronomical images. If you don't see a subject you are looking for, just ask - I may have it.  This week's image is of a passion flower, of course!

Many of my photos can be previewed on my Smugmug website I will also have enlargements in 11x14" and 16x20" sizes and can make posters upon request. Drop by for a look and a chat!

Caballo Rojo Coffee
My name is Gabriela Kavanaugh and I am owner and roaster for Caballo Rojo Coffee, roasting locally here in Durham. My grandfather was a leading coffee roaster in Venezuela and I wanted to continue this family tradition in my local community. My goal is to create moments involving coffee that connect the international community,  that provides us with coffee, with our our local community. We are excited to be able to foster this vision by being at the Durham Farmers Market, providing you with cups of brewed coffee and bags of whole bean coffee.
