Our winter Bible Study series focuses on what Jesus was up to between Christmas and his baptism in the Jordan River. Some stories are well known (the shepherds, the magi), while others are less so (the flight to Egypt, the prophetess Anna). There are also ancient non-biblical stories about Jesus' childhood that are at times moving, comical, or even grotesque. One infancy narrative not in the gospels can be found in the Quran!

We will spend our Mondays diving into the Biblical witness of Jesus' childhood, with some wanderings into myth and folktale. What do the stories of Jesus' early days teach us about how we might welcome Christ into our lives right now? What might we learn from Mary, and Joseph, and Simeon, and the wise men? How might we respond to the Herods of our day? What might God be calling us to do in order to nurture the Word, the True Light, which has come into the world?

Tonight we explore the often-heard story of the angels appearing to shepherds in Luke's gospel. Perhaps you, like me, have heard this story often but have not explored it in depth since childhood. What does it mean that God chooses to announce this good news first to shepherds? What is Luke trying to convey about who God is and what God is up to in Jesus?
