Dear WW Philadelphia Member,


When losing weight, there is so much more going on with our bodies than just the number on the scale.


The last time I joined Weight Watchers (back in the day) there was a place on the Week 1 Materials where we were to enter measurements of different parts of our bodies; upper arms, neck, calves, thighs, and of course, the obligatory chest, waist, and hips.


We were encouraged to jot down these numbers and use them in the future. After all, inches off is what we all truly wanted. The number on the scale was private. The inches lost was what everyone saw.


I was HORRIFIED 😧 by the thought of placing a measuring tape around my waist. I didn’t want to know the number and I couldn’t bring myself to do it. So, I measured my thigh, and I wrote the number down on the corresponding line.


One year later and 94 pounds down, my waist was smaller than my thigh had been when I started. I was really excited!


This measuring practice is no longer part of the Weight Watchers program. We don't take measurements and weigh ins are optional. The program is confidential and your safe space 🤗 But, I tell this story because I want you to know it is okay to be uncomfortable about measuring tapes and even scales. These items are simply tools that we use to “kind of” measure our weight-loss success.


Think about it. Every change we notice is a measure of success! The belt that was being used on the last notch and now needs a new hole to tighten; the clothes in the storage closest we were keeping for some reason 🤔 (even though they may be considered vintage now, they FIT!); the unaccustomed comfort in the seat at a venue.


All the little things that change that we hardly notice, are building up to the big things that WOW us. I remember one day while bending over and tying my shoes, I DID NOTICE I could breathe and tie my shoes at the same time. And here's a weird thing of about that, I saw that I tied my shoes in the center instead of to the side because I CAN bend over!


Losing weight may seem like a slow process, and in many ways it is. It takes as long as it takes but the health strides and the subtle changes like shoe tying make every Point counted worth it.


Consider keeping a little journal or notebook someplace where you can jot down some measurements or other metrics that you’ll be able to compare later. I’ve even met Members who have lost a shoe size, so don't be surprised! And, this is your private log--for your eyes only.
