Joint Doctoral Program in Social work and Social Science Fall 2018 Class
A Note from the Director
I am delighted to share the first newsletter of the Joint PhD Program in Social Work and Social Science at the University of Michigan. The Joint PhD Program in Social Work and Social Science prepares our doctoral students for teaching and research careers through the advancement of knowledge about social problems, social change, social interventions and social welfare. Our curriculum integrates comprehensive graduate training in a specific social science discipline with advanced studies and research in various areas of social work. Therefore, we have a broad range of research areas and disciplinary specializations in which our students receive expert training and experience.

The first edition of the newsletter focuses on what it means to be a joint program, our commitment to diversity, and to introduce you to several of our students and their research contributions to the field. I hope you enjoy the inaugural edition of the newsletter.
Focus on Research
Building Bridges with Joint PhD Student Joyce Lee
The Joint PhD Program bridges the gaps between theory and action by utilizing social science theory and methods to address significant social problems relevant to social workers.

Coming Into His Own: Joint PhD Student Ed-Dee Williams
There were faculty members at Michigan Social Work, as well as in other departments, conducting research on black men and boys. Williams felt the joint program would be the best fit for his research endeavors.
