We will once again be administering spring exams this coming week (schedule below). I am very pleased with how well the testing process has run so far these past two weeks. I thank our JHS families and students for their cooperation so far this year.

OCPS Parent Academy will be hosting another one of their excellent events this Saturday morning with an emphasis on summer break opportunities (below). Please take a look at the agenda as they have prepared some very helpful material relevant to our Tigers over the summer.

Have a great weekend and thank you for looking over this current issue.

Sincerely,

Roderick Waldon

Student Spotlight

Congratulations to sophomore Kenneth Rolle II on his acceptance to the W.E.B. Scholars Summer Institute at Princeton University. He will spend a month at the prestigious university and will attend university-level courses from 8:00am to 4:50pm. The curriculum structure is based on the philosophical assumption that self-knowledge, motivation, good skills, and an interest in the well-being of others are essential for effective leadership and academic success. The courses emphasize time management, collaborative learning, critical thinking and problem solving. Fridays and weekends are reserved for field trips, test prep, leadership workshops, and recreation. Congratulations, Kenneth!

Kenneth was also selected to serve on Dr. Barbara Jenkins' Student Advisory Council for the 2017-18 school year with rising senior Alyssa Wilson who is ranked second in the class of 2018.

Congratulations to senior Isaiah Pratt, who is one of ten finalists for Holler Honda's Fit for College car giveaway! Tomorrow he finds out if his key fits the lock to a 2017 Honda Fit. He had all As and Bs on his report cards, so he received three entries into the contest. Out of all entries in Orange and Seminole counties, his name was randomly selected. Take your grades seriously and you could qualify next year!

Rigor in the Classroom

AP World History
Kudos to our AP World History students for coming in last Saturday to take a mock exam. The students feel prepared thanks to the excellent instruction of their teacher, Ms. Mathews. As one student stated, "Ms. Mathews doesn't play. She really knows what she's talking about!" Great dedication and commitment by all.

On Monday, May 8 at 7PM Ms. Mathews and her students will participate in a worldwide Kahoot review for the exam. Check out this link for more information.

CBVE

Did you know that our Community-Based Vocational Education students spend an average of 300 hours per year in vocational exploration, assessment, and training? The CBVE program creates individual training objectives for students and assesses their interests, aptitudes, learning styles, work habits, and personal and social skills to determine an appropriate work setting that best meets their needs.

Many of our CBVE students enjoy working with GROW Orlando, Inc., a wonderful organization that offers vocational training with an opportunity for employment. Several of our juniors and seniors earn a paycheck from GROW Orlando, Inc. on the weekends by completing meaningful horticultural projects for Central Florida homeowners and businesses. For more information, check them out on Facebook.

We are so proud of Kermit Whitfield (2013) for all of the obstacles he has overcome. In an interview with the Orlando Sentinel, he stated, "God puts you through stuff for a reason and you overcome it. It made me the better person that I am today. I've got my head on straight. He prepared me."
Kermit just signed as a free agent for the Chicago Bears.
