On Friday, August 4th we will have our orientation and Meet the Teacher event. Meet the Teacher will start inside the Media Center promptly at 8 AM. Please use this time to familiarize yourself with the Jones High School campus, locate your classes/meet your teachers. On this day you will follow a set schedule going from periods 1 to 7.

A group of Tigers share our high school motto, "It's all about respect, responsibility, and accountability" for a News 6 crew which ran a very favorable video story on JHS' academic success this summer.

OCPS The Slice: "Mondays with Maria - Back-to-School edition" ran yesterday. Superintendent Dr. Maria Vazquez is pictured above on the set with Nancy Alvarez, WESH news anchor. Please click here for the latest back-to-school information from our superintendent of schools. (Dr. Vazquez is beginning her second year as superintendent and typically puts out a short "Monday's with Maria" each Monday morning on YouTube with topics which will be of interest to our Jones community.)

Thank you for reading and to all of our wonderful educators who return tomorrow, August 2, WELCOME BACK!
In Tiger Pride,
Orlando Norwood
Principal
Pictured very top: Jerrian Parker sprints for a touchdown during May's spring football matchup with Apopka. Our Tigers made it to the state semifinals last year with an 11-3 record. Please see this year's schedule below. (Photo credit: Orlando Sentinel)
*** How we chose this edition's top image. The speed that Jerrian is making for the end zone vs. Apopka's Blue Darters in the spring game is symbolic of the pace we expect to open up the 2023-2024 school year with. We have been preparing all summer for our Tigers' return to school next week with our teachers capping off that prep time tomorrow as they enter their annual pre-planning period. Tiger Pride!

Back-to-school belt tightening: A reminder to our Jones families to take advantage of the sales tax holiday as able.
Average spending per child on back-to-school shopping in the U.S. will fall 10% from last year to $597, marking the first decline since 2014. The 2023 Deloitte back-to-school survey points to inflation as the driving force. Shoppers are expected to replenish student necessities, such as basic school supplies, while holding off on nonessentials like tech and apparel. Still, six in 10 parents say they would be willing to splurge for the right reasons, like treating their child. Prices for school supplies have jumped nearly 24% in the last two years.

This Week's Motivational Moment!
|
|
As featured above, Mr. Tarin Davies is our new Choral Director. Chosen by a special committee comprised of Andrea Green, Dr. Jeffrey Redding, Dr. Chevalier and Principal Norwood, he already has his Tiger choral students underway. For instance, this summer he held a choral camp which also included a concert at the end. Mr. Davies brings a strong work ethic plus, as he described, a "generational, younger, and positive outlook."
While his education has been acquired primarily here in central Florida (Gateway High School, Valencia College, and UCF) his parents are originally from Jamaica and Sierra Leone. Hardworking parents, they set the example and today Mr. Davies has arrived with the full blessing of Mrs. Green, our amazing Choir Director from 2011-2023. In a recent Orlando Times article (July 20-26), Mrs. Green said, "As an intern under the direction of yours truly, he demonstrated that he will surely continue the standard of choral excellence that has already been established and honor the legacy and tradition of Jones High School."
Our Tigers are in good hands. Be sure to join us this school year for any special choral concerts when the time comes.
