Announcing the Jordan Institute Fellowship for Social Work Leaders

We are so excited to launch our fellowship and are accepting applications for our inaugural 2025 class! This new 7-month professional development program is designed to fill a gap in the support available to social work professionals in management and leadership roles. The fellowship will equip experienced leaders in North Carolina with relevant and high impact content to support professional learning and development along with ongoing connection with peers and other thought leaders and experts. Fellows will have the chance to develop a personal/professional development plan with resources to help them activate their goals. People who complete the program will be designated as a Jordan Institute Social Work Fellow with ongoing access to programming and community. Through a mix of skill-building, peer connection, and reflective practice, fellows will strengthen their capacity to lead with authenticity, resilience, and impact.

Summer Leadership Series a Success

The Hive: Jordan Institute Leadership Initiative and Webinar Series

In April 2025, the Jordan Institute for Families launched the Leadership Development Initiative to strengthen and support social work leaders at every stage in their careers. As part of this effort, and in advance of the Fellowship for Social Work Leaders, we hosted The Hive! A three-part webinar series that created space for leadership growth, reflection, and connection. The Hive! brought together rising and mid-career social workers with a dynamic panel of speakers who shared their wisdom, strategies, and stories. Each session invited participants to reflect on their personal and professional leadership journeys while learning new approaches to leadership grounded in strategy in uncertain times, resilience, and collective community care. Across all three sessions, participant feedback told us that the series was a good use of time, offered valuable insights on leadership approaches, and showcased panelists who provided helpful leadership perspectives.

We paired the Hive webinars with three smaller "lunch meet" sessions where participants had the chance to talk with each other in small break out groups about topics such as leading during times of change, managing overwhelm, and re-imagining rest. These sessions offered the chance for individual connection.

Caregiving across the Lifecourse

There are 100 million caregivers in the US today. Whether care is temporary due to an illness, for a season for elderly parents, or for a lifetime for a child with a special health care needs, every day countless Americans are rolling up their sleeves and offering their love, time and service to help family and friends during difficult times. Often overlooked, caregiving can take a significant toll on a person's finances and health - and needed supports are often lacking. We have been talking with caregiving researchers across the state to listen for themes across conditions with the aim to bring researchers together to craft a blueprint for collective work. JIF is now a proud sponsor and member of the NC Serious Illness Coalition and the national Caregiving Conference 2026. We also joined the national Caring Across Generations Coalition and attended the NC Caregivers Conference. In July we had the chance to join a conversation on WCOM 103.5 with Heather Altman around anticipatory guidance and caregiving lessons learned from the postpartum experience. We also joined two community conversations about a new documentary on caregiving - such rich conversation. Stay tuned for more to come!

Leadership Interview Series

As part of our new leadership initiative, Allison De Marco has been talking with social work and other leaders to learn about their career paths, how they innovate in uncertain times, and advice they have for those looking to take on leadership roles. We spoke with UNC MSW grad Nora Spencer, founder and Executive Director of Hope Renovations, about her work to achieve gender equity in the construction trades. The former Chapel Hill Fire Department chief, Matt Sullivan is a social worker! We chatted about how he used his social work training in that role. Allison also interviewed one of our advisory group members, Sherenne Simon, about lessons we can learn from her new book, Own Your Influence: An Unconventional Journey to Making an Impact at Work. We will be posting new interviews monthly. You can find all these interviews on our blog on our website OR follow us on LinkedIn.
