Renew My Church Update

Our Lincoln Park/Old Town grouping has completed our meetings for this phase of the  Renew My Church process. As you know, we have been meeting since February with parish teams from St. Teresa of Avila, St. Vincent De Paul, St. Michael and Immaculate Conception/St. Joseph parishes. We have been discussing the best way to make use of our resources in terms of priest personnel, parish staff, facilities, etc.

The Archdiocese presented us with an initial scenario for our grouping to consider. The scenario suggested that St. Josaphat Parish and St. Teresa of Avila Parish merge and form a new canonical parish beginning  July 1, 2019. The combined parish would maintain both worship sites and be staffed by one pastor. The other parishes would maintain their current canonical structures. However, all parishes would work together to find ways of sharing staff, resources and parish programs as appropriate.

Our grouping also came up with an alternative scenario that would have all of the parishes retain their current canonical structures and pastors for a period of three years, while we continue to work together to find ways of sharing resources and collaborating in ministry. The grouping would set goals for increasing Mass attendance and better evangelizing the nearly 15,000 Catholics currently living in Lincoln Park and Old Town. At the end of the three-year period, we would re-evaluate the progress we have made and determine with the Archdiocese whether or not a merging of parishes was required.

This past  Friday, we submitted our feedback on the two scenarios. A majority of the parish teams felt that the initial scenario to merge St. Josaphat and St. Teresa of Avila parishes into one parish with one pastor was the best option. It was suggested the change be made within one or two years. However, some members of the parish teams felt that the alternative scenario to not make any structural changes was better. All of our feedback went into a document that will be reviewed by the Cardinal and the  Renew My Church Committee. A final decision will be made in the fall. In the meantime, all of the pastors and teams are exploring ways to collaborate and share ministries.

Last week we celebrated Pentecost, the birth of the Church, when the Holy Spirit sent the Apostles out of the Upper Room and out on mission to spread the Gospel to every corner of the world. Clearly the Holy Spirit is also at work here in Chicago and is calling us to do new things, to shake off old structures and ways of ministering, and to be bold in imagining a new way of evangelizing people and bringing them into a relationship with Jesus Christ. So please keep all of the pending decisions of the  Renew My Church process in your prayers, perhaps even praying the Sequence from before the Pentecost Gospel (below). And let us be open to the movement of the Holy Spirit here at St. Josaphat Parish and in our Lincoln Park/Old Town grouping.

Come, Holy Spirit,
send forth the heavenly
radiance of your light.
Come, father of the poor,
come, giver of gifts,
come, light of the heart.
Greatest comforter,
sweet guest of the soul,
sweet consolation.
In labour, rest,
in heat, temperance,
in tears, solace.
O most blessed light,
fill the inmost heart
of your faithful.
Without your spirit,
there is nothing in man,
nothing that is not harmful.
Cleanse that which is unclean,
water that which is dry,
heal that which is wounded.
Bend that which is inflexible,
fire that which is chilled,
correct what goes astray.
Give to your faithful,
those who trust in you,
the sevenfold gifts.
Grant the reward of virtue,
grant the deliverance of salvation,
grant eternal joy.
