More about the film series

"Released in 1988, The Power of Myth was one of the most popular TV series in the history of public television, and continues to inspire new audiences. Campbell was a leading scholar in mythology and comparative religion. He believed that myths and epics are linked in the human psyche and are cultural manifestations of the need to explain social, cosmological, and spiritual realities. He also believed that myths are symbolic and metaphorical images of the energies of the body's organs in conflict with each other.

The Joseph Campbell Foundation (JCF) shares the message of myth and invites people to experience its power. The JCF sells physical merchandise, e-books, and audio lectures, with purchases supporting the foundation's mission.

In this beloved 1988 PBS series, mythologist and storyteller Joseph Campbell joins Bill Moyers to explore what enduring myths can tell us about our lives. In each of these six episodes, Moyers and Campbell focus on a character or theme found in cultural and religious mythologies. Campbell argues that these timeless archetypes continue to have a powerful influence on the choices we make and the ways we live.

Released shortly after Campbell’s death on October 30, 1987, The Power of Myth was one of the most popular TV series in the history of public television, and continues to inspire new audiences.
