Dear Supporters of Quality Education,

iZania Market BulklisterJust two years ago, the Joseph Littles Nguzo Saba Charter School was facing eviction from their facility, amid many struggles for survival. Serving just 64 students, they were struggling with financial viability.

Many of you responded to our nationwide fundraising drive to keep the school alive.  Thanks to your generous support,  and a strong community-wide recruitment effort, their current enrollment  is 224 students in K through 8th grade.

Amefika Geuka, the founder and Chairman of the Board, credits the dedicated recruiting efforts of the staff, and an outpouring of support from the community that has demonstrated its support by sending more of their children to Joseph Littles.

They now proudly occupy the historic Roosevelt High School building in the heart of the West Palm Beach, FL  Black community. This school was built for Black students in 1951. Preserving this building as a landmark in the Black community was made possible by the relocation of the Joseph Littles NGUZO SABA Charter School.

Now that they have weathered the financial storm, the school is prepared to meet its next challenge -- to become an "A Grade School."  They have a new principal -- Dr. Helen Byrd, a retired principal, and Ms. Gayle Fulford, assistant principal -- two retired professionals who were inspired to come out of retirement and work for one salary to lead the school to reach its full potential.

The Florida- Charter School Growth Fund (CSGF) and the Florida Department of Education recently announced a $30 million Fund to support the expansion of high-performing, high-quality public charter schools in the state's highest need communities. Florida charter schools that have been successful in serving low-income students and have the capacity to grow can compete for a public-private fund created through the Race to the Top grant.

Your support is needed once again to help Joseph Littles Nguzo Saba Charter School meet this challenge to help the least of us.

In spite of the struggle to keep his school alive, Geuka said he refuses to turn his back on his community and the foundation he started.  "Faculty members do not merely address formal and academic education, but also a social and self-disciplinary education. The school provides students with a sense of family and belonging that is best suited to meet their individual learning needs", Geuka said.  "Our school is special because the children are at the center of the universe. The whole world revolves around them."

GENEROSITY BEGETS GENEROSITY

At Joseph Littles Nguzo Saba Charter School we believe in connecting with our local, national and international communities in order to foster strong relationships to better our collective future. As an African Centered School, we feel it is our duty to connect with other African Centered schools in order to build a strong African Centered community. One such relationship that we have fostered is with our sister school, Ayensudo Akoma International Academy of Arts and Sciences. Our sister school is located in Ghana and is very similar to our school. The Ghanaian school has a population of approximately 200 students in grades K-9. Also like our school, it was founded by an African American who felt it necessary to infuse African culture and history into the curriculum.

Since 2010 we have taken several steps to nurture our connection. In May 2011 our Imhotep and Aset leadership groups held a car wash in order to raise money for the tuition of students attending the Akoma Academy. With the help of our founder, the board, staff and students we raised $3,500 for our sister school. Those funds are being used to help students attend school for a full year. Also our students are staying connected. We are sending letters from Florida to Ghana in order to develop international relationships between our students. Students have sent and received several letters so far with this positive campaign.

Our only failure in response to this appeal would be to do nothing. Any contribution is acceptable. Be as generous as your means will allow.
