In 1986, James Carse, a professor of religion, coined the phrase "the infinite game." A finite game is played to win. An infinite game is played for the purpose of continuing the game. (Finite and Infinite Games, 1986) The infinite game is intergenerational. Settling for the status quo usually seems the safe play, but playing it safe is risky.

Do we have an infinite mindset or a finite mindset? Infinite-minded leaders have a clear sense of Cause/Vision for the future. A strong plan for the future. A willingness to be effective in experimentation. Long memory is central. And the ability to forget is important. In Isaiah 43:18-19 we find,

Forget the former things;

  do not dwell on the past.

See, I am doing a new thing!

  Now it springs up; do you not perceive it.

I happen to agree with R. T. Kendall: "The greatest opposition

 to what God is doing today comes from those who were on the cutting edge of what God was doing yesterday." (The Anointing, Today, Yesterday, and Tomorrow)
