Our Mission Statement

We of Joy Lutheran Church foster
grace-filled relationships with Christ
through worship, fellowship, and service.

Gospel: John 18:33-37
Even after Israel had experienced the vagaries of kings, they still longed for a true king to set things right. He would have the king's title of Anointed One (Messiah); he would be the "one like a human being" (Son of Man) given dominion in Daniel's vision. Jesus is given these titles, even though he is nothing like an earthly king. His authority comes from the truth to which he bears witness, and those who recognize the truth voluntarily listen to him. We look forward to the day he is given dominion, knowing his victory will be the nonviolent victory of love.

Thanksgiving Eve Worship - TONIGHT
Please take a break from all that chopping and baking and join us for worship on the eve of Thanksgiving.  We'll gather at 7:00pm to give thanks and enjoy a peaceful respite before the often hectic weekend ahead.  Pastor has chosen some beautiful hymns and Vanessa will accompany our joyful songs of praise and thanksgiving.

Counters Needed - STILL!
Do you know what happens to your offering after it goes into the offering plate?  Well, before it can used to support the ministry of Jesus, it has to be counted, recorded, and deposited. That work is done by two volunteers right after worship ends. It's a quick, but important part of our stewardship of God's gifts and your financial support.  It generally takes 20-30 minutes.

We need some more people who are willing to sign up for this important ministry.  There are instructions and training is available. Volunteers take turns signing up, much like we do for our other volunteers positions, which helps to spread out the Sundays you serve.

If you are willing to help, please sign upon the bulletin board in the narthex.  Look for the sheet that says, "Sunday Worship Assistants." Thank you.

Thanksgiving Blessing
Thank you to everyone who donated peas and cranberries for this year's Thanksgiving Blessing, all the volunteers who provided cookies & refreshments, and everyone who kept them all well stocked throughout the event and so beautifully displayed.  We heard MANY times how grateful the volunteers and neighbors were to Joy Lutheran for the beautiful hosting and use of our church.

The debriefing meeting for Thanksgiving Blessing is next week, but preliminary numbers indicate approximately 238 meals were given out to our Eagle River and Chugiak neighbors.
Advent is coming!  Let's Decorate the Church!
Help us decorate for Advent!  The season begins Sunday, Dec. 2, and the tree and all the trimmings will go up on Saturday, Dec. 1st. (This will take the place of the usual Men's Group/Breakfast Club on Dec. 8.)

Join us at 9:30am for a potluck breakfast, then join us in decking the hall with stars and all the rest.  There are low branches and higher ones, so lots for the whole family to do, not to mention those who are nimble and willing to scramble up ladders!

New ideas and hands always welcome!

Kid's Worship and Community Wreath Making - December 2, 11:00 AM
Our next Kid's Worship will usher in the season of Advent!
After a brief worship, we will also begin our tradition of Community Advent Wreath Making.

Everyone is welcome! Come, make an Advent Wreath, eat some holiday food, and revel in the season.  A suggested donation of $20 will be accepted to cover materials, but all are welcome to join us.  Invite your friends and neighbors as we celebrate the beginning of this season and begin our faithful waiting for the coming of Jesus.

Wednesday Evening Advent Worship & Soup
Advent is almost here!  Once again, we will be having Wednesday evening worships during advent, beginning on December 5th at 7:00 pm.  These are shorter, more relaxed worship times, that allow us all to slow down a bit from our hectic December schedules and be gently reminded of the important message of this season for our lives. Advent means "coming" and we remember that Jesus came for us and all people, and still comes to us each day with love and acceptance.

We will also continue our tradition of having soup suppers prior to these worship times, beginning at 6:15 pm. This allows busy people the opportunity to skip making a meal at home, and join their faith family in some hearty soup and bread.

We are looking for some folks to help provide these meals.  It is always fun to share and enjoy the various soups people bring. If you would like to make a soup or bring some bread, there is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board.

Hello Singers!
Be a part of the Musical Joy this season!  Laura Storrs and Vanessa Jackson are ready to get a choir singing at Joy for the Christmas season.  We are looking for folks who love music and want to sing together to celebrate the Joy of Jesus coming into the world for us all.  You don't have to read music, just have an eagerness to sing.  If you can sing hymns in church, you are just who we need.

To help get as many people as possible, we're going to be practicing after church on Sundays (unless there is a children's service), and Tuesday nights at 7:00 pm.  You don't have to be at both times if you schedule doesn't allow.  We are starting TODAY Sunday, November 18th, and will meet again this Tuesday, November 20th.

Please spread the word!
Mona, Vanessa and Laura

Christmas Poinsettias
There's a signup sheet on the bulletin board to sponsor a poinsettia to beautify the altar during our Christmas Eve worship services.  You are welcome to take your poinsettia home after the service.  It costs $15 to sponsor one.  Please mark your check with "poinsettia" in the memo line.  Thank you in advance to Nancy Daugherty for taking the orders and delivering them to church.
