Our Mission Statement

We of Joy Lutheran Church foster
grace-filled relationships with Christ
through worship, fellowship, and service.

Gospel: Mark 5:21-43
A woman finds healing by touching Jesus' cloak, and a girl is restored to life when he takes her by the hand. In both cases a boundary is crossed: in Jesus' time the hemorrhaging woman was considered ritually unclean, polluting others by her touch, and anyone who touched a corpse also became unclean. In Mark's gospel Jesus breaks down barriers, from his first meal at a tax collector's house to his last breath on the cross as the temple curtain is torn in two. We dare to touch Jesus in our "uncleanness" and to live as a community that defines no one as an outsider.

Blessing of the Backpacks Sunday -
August 19
Even though we are busy enjoying our Alaskan summer, it won't be too long before school begins again.

This year, we will start the school year off right with a "Blessing of the Backpacks" on Sunday, August 19.  We invite all students to bring their school backpacks to church that Sunday and we will have a time to bless them and pray for our students as they begin a new school year.  There will also be prayers for our teachers, administrators, and all other school staff members, so please bring your briefcases, lunch bag, or tote bags.

Kids' Offering -- Clean Water Project
Thank you, young people, for your support of our Clean Water offering!  Thanks to your donations, we were able to supply enough water filters for about seven families in a developing country.  Since water-borne diseases and parasites are a leader cause of childhood mortality in these areas, your gifts go a long way to saving lives.  Thank you!

Love INC Backpack Giveaway - August 18
Rev. Gracie Jackson is looking for volunteers to help during the annual Backpack Giveaway at Harvest Christian Fellowship on Saturday, August 18.  If you'd like to help organize and distribute school items for this event, please call Rev. Gracie at 250-1735.

The Spitfire Grill
Branching out from opera a bit, Pastor Martin has been busy this month rehearsing for a musical at Cyrano's. "The Spitfire Grill" is a musical adaptation of the 1996 film of the same name. It centers around Percy Talbot, a recent parolee from prison who seeks to escape her troubled past by traveling to Gilead, Wisconsin, a little town she saw in a magazine while she was in prison.  What she finds is a town not as idyllic as it might seem, but a place in need of a new hope and healing.

Pastor Melissa Johnson's Ordination
Pastor Melissa Johnson was ordained and installed as pastor of St. Paul Lutheran in Winlock, Washington on Sunday, June 17. Pastor Julia Seymour, Don & Bonnie Bladow (Lutheran Church of Hope), and Pastor Martin and Shelly represented Alaska and Melissa's two internship congregations.  Melissa thanks all the people of both Joy Lutheran and Lutheran Church of Hope for their thoughts, prayers, and well wishes.

Summertime at Joy!
We have many opportunities to get involved at Joy Lutheran this summer with the vegetable garden, lawn care & Sunday breakfast.

Grow vegetables! Our raised beds will need planting, weeding, and harvesting.

Tend the lawn! The grass around the church will need mowing on a regular basis and other TLC.

Have breakfast! Our Sunday Faith Family Breakfasts will begin after Memorial Day. Each week we need someone to prepare breakfast to be shared after worship (anything from muffins and coffee to where your imagination takes you), as we enjoy the meal in fellowship.

If you are interested, please sign up on the sheets in the narthex. If you are interested in being the coordinator for any of these activities (this does NOT mean doing it all yourself!), please contact Jan in the church office, Pastor Martin or Henry Huntington, our Council president. Many thanks!

The Joy of Reading Book Club

No Book Club meeting in July as our members are out and about enjoying all that Alaskan summers have to offer.

We will resume out meetings in August.  We meet the 3rd Monday of the month for a light dinner and book discussion.  Here are our upcoming books.  We are still finalizing our location plans.
