Our Mission Statement

We of Joy Lutheran Church foster
grace-filled relationships with Christ
through worship, fellowship, and service.

Gospel: John 11:32-44
Of all three years of the lectionary cycle, this year's All Saints readings have the most tears. Isaiah and Revelation look forward to the day when God will wipe away all tears; in John's gospel, Jesus weeps along with Mary and all the gathered mourners before he demonstrates his power over death. On All Saints Day we celebrate the victory won for all the faithful dead, but we grieve for our beloved dead as well, knowing that God honors our tears. We bring our grief to the table and find there a foretaste of Isaiah's feast to come.

Daylight Saving Time Ends
November 4

Before heading to bed Saturday night, remember to turn the clocks back 1 hour, or don't change them and come to church
an hour early and start the coffee!  :-) haha!

Thank you!
Thank you!
A HUGE thank you to all who contributed to the Fundraiser last Sunday!  We are still working on collecting a few winning bids but when all is said and done, we should be right around a miraculous $5000 mark!  It will be put to good use on winter utility bills and furnace maintenance so we can all stay warm and cozy this winter.  Hurray!
  • Thank you to all who contributed items to the Potluck and Silent Auction!
  • Thank you to all who made generous bids on the Auction items!
  • Thank you to all who set-up on Saturday!
  • Thank you to all who helped clean up on Sunday!
A special thank you to
  • Our Puppeteers - Pastor, Mona and Jim - weren't they great?
  • Our coffee cup sellers - Sue W & Torie
  • Our organized check-out person - Karen J
  • Our band, who would love to come back and play for one of our services.
All in all, the event was great success both from a funds-raised standpoint and, more importantly, from a get-out-and-have-fun-with-the-faith-family standpoint!

And a special Thank You to Betty for her exemplary organizational skills and vision,
and Wayne Fredeen for documenting all the fun with his beautiful photos!

Other Joy-full News

Counters Needed - STILL!
Do you know what happens to your offering after it goes into the offering plate?  Well, before it can used to support the ministry of Jesus, it has to be counted, recorded, and deposited. That work is done by two volunteers right after worship ends. It's a quick, but important part of our stewardship of God's gifts and your financial support.  It generally takes 20-30 minutes.

We need some more people who are willing to sign up for this important ministry.  There are instructions and training is available. Volunteers take turns signing up, much like we do for our other volunteers positions, which helps to spread out the Sundays you serve.

If you are willing to help, please sign upon the bulletin board in the narthex.  Look for the sheet that says, "Sunday Worship Assistants." Thank you.

See's Candy Fundraiser for JCDC!
The JCDC annual fundraiser is underway!  Michelle Kruse will be taking orders for See's Candy after church on November 4 and 11.  The money raised will go toward playground improvements and summer program supplies.  We greatly appreciate all the support we receive from the people of Joy!

"God's Kids Praise" Nov 4 at 11:00 am
Our next First Sunday Alternative worship, "God's Kids Praise" will be November 4 th at 11:00. This is a worship service is designed for people with younger children who sometimes find if a challenge to sit through an hour-long worship.  The worship time is shorter (25 minutes) and more interactive.  We will sing kid friendly music, hear a story about Jesus, and talk about how Jesus' loves us all.
"God's Kids Praise" will be offered every first Sunday of the month at 11:00 am.

ELCA Alaska Youth Group Lock-In
Friday, November 9, 9:30 pm to 1:00 am
The local Lutheran Churches are getting together to sponsor this youth event and we will get a chance to "take over" (as in, we'll be the only guests) The Alaska Club East facility while we are there. It's for ELCA Alaska Youth groups (middle and high school youth) and costs $20 /person.

Pool party, games, new and reunited friends & staff from multiple church youth groups, snacks, music, more...  Please bring swimsuit & gym clothes. If you are interested, let Pastor Martin know. It would be fun to get a group from Joy!

Thanksgiving Blessing
Joy Lutheran Church has been asked to provide 100 cans of peas (have 82 so far) and 100 cans of cranberry sauce (have 38) this year.

As the host location, Joy provides refreshments during the event; so, if you're baking something scrumptious in the next few weeks and want to double the batch to put one in the freezer for Thanksgiving Blessing, that would be wonderful! The sign-up sheet for Joy Lutheran volunteer positions is on the Opportunities bulletin board. We are also collecting new winter coats - no gently used ones, please.
