Dear Friends of The Blue Purl,

Ok, so let’s just address the issue we all are likely thinking about: Election Day is closing in.

Don’t worry, we are not about to talk politics, but we think this is a good time to focus on what binds us as a community, what makes our precious world, the world of knitting and crochet, a model for everyone.

Why do you work with your hands? Does it give you peace of mind? Does it give you satisfaction, improve your self-esteem? Or is it simply fun?

Look, we all came to this for different reasons. Maybe a friend or parent introduced you. Maybe it was a way to escape or a way to fill otherwise idle hours. Or perhaps a mad creative drive, a brain challenge.

It doesn’t really matter, does it? What matters is that we have this common bond. We see the beauty in the materials and embrace the joy, fulfillment and serenity that comes with casting off a project. We relish talking over the intricacies with each other - honestly someone on the outside listening in to a conversation about the latest box of Tosh colors that arrived or the wrap Casapinka just dropped would think us a tad fanatical! But it's all authentic, heartfelt.

We can wear this commonality like a life preserver through difficult times, especially when we come together as a community.

"The commonality in the human experience is the same. We have the same sorrows, and the same triumphs. Joy is joy is joy." - Our modern day SuperSoul sage - Oprah

We all benefit when we focus on what we share in common. We can leave differences behind and lift each-other up.

BROOKLYN TWEED Pop-Up Shop
Brooklyn Tweed samples have arrived and they are beautiful winter classics. It's hard to pick a favorite.

  • Woodfords is a loose fitting open cardigan made in Loft. Versatile dressed up or down.

  • Crosshatch is that bright accessory you reach for all winter long, knitted in Arbor and Peerie. The pattern has sizing for a wrap or scarf.

  • Grettir is a modern version of an Icelandic pullover with sizing for men & women. We love playing with color options in Shelter for the yoke on this one.

  • The Skipp hat is a great vehicle for learning & practicing brioche in one Loft color or more.

  • The Meyer turtleneck is a cozy sweater designed to showoff the beauty of marled color ways in Shelter.

  • The Interval shawl is the perfect pattern for beginner shawl knitting. Knitted in Arbor, the pattern includes 3 sizes, uses simple techniques and includes links to video tutorials.
New Pattern Collection....
Brooklyn Tweed's latest collection- Terre:Viridis is both style & substance and we love that there are patterns for all skill levels. Here's a few of our favorites.

  • Calderon is a cardigan to wear year after year. The loose fit, textured body is knit in squishy Shelter and as usual the pattern includes links to tutorials for special techniques for an intermediate knitter.

  • The Synthe sweater in Shelter is great for beginning sweater knitters to practice their basic skills while learning simple sweater construction. The pattern has options for long or short sleeves.

  • The Hinoki hat has deceptively simple cables that's perfect for those of us looking to practice cabling without a cable needle. The pattern uses 1 skein of Peerie to get that wonderful stitch definition.

  • The Nidus scarf in Arbor (top right) is listed as "adventurous beginner" by Brooklyn Tweed. We think the beautiful leaf motif will keep you interested while practicing short rows throughout the pattern. We love that Brooklyn Tweed provides links to video tutorials to special techniques used in this pattern.
Brooklyn Tweed Classes
Our Brooklyn Tweed classes are starting to fill up. We've kept them intentionally small so that Keri & Liz can spend enough time helping the students. While most of the classes start in January, we will close out registration of these classes when our Brooklyn Tweed Pop-Up ends. Call us at 973-377-564 or email - [email protected]

These classes are planned around this wonderful rustic, American sourced & dyed yarn. We have 7 classes at various levels of experience from sweaters to accessories that show off the beauty of Brooklyn Tweed. One sweater class (Weekender Light) starts in November, while the rest will kick off our Winter session in January. The classes are geared towards using Brooklyn Tweed yarn purchased during our Pop-Up. If you plan to sign up for these classes, please purchase or place your special order for the quantities & color needed during our Pop-Up. Once the Pop-Up ends (early November), we can no longer accept orders, even if you signed up for a class.

What's New?
Hat Season
It feels like Mother Nature just flipped a switch and it's now hat season. We've got you covered- in hats for all ages and gauges.
Pull the Wool Over
We updated our popular Pull the Wool Over hat kits with more colors. Each kit includes 1 skein of hand dyed worsted- Lichen & Lace or Tosh Vintage, 1 ball of Tynn Silk Mohair & 1 large faux pom pom and a free pattern. These kits make great gifts as-is or use the kit to make a gorgeous hat to gift. This is an easy classic hat pattern.
The Vermonter
Wendy made this Vermonter by Abi Gregorio "in a heartbeat." She used a size US11 needle and 1 ball of Berroco Coco and had a kids' hat in no time. We have medium sized pom poms in fun colors, perfect for smaller hats.
Thanks to Emily for modeling :)
Two by Two
Two by Two by Anne Gagnon is a simple 2x2 rib hat, versatile for guys & gals. Sam is wearing his made with 1 skein of Berroco Ultra Alpaca on a US 6 needle. We think Rocky needs a matching hat too.
Morning Walk Hat
The Morning Walk hat is luxurious and utilitarian at the same time. The hat is knit holding Woolfolk Tynd & Sno together to double the warmth & and to trap more warm air between the fibers. The yarn is as soft as cashmere and the pattern is a simple rib. Find our kits online or in the shop.
Zippy
Impress your family, friends & neighbors. Let them think you did all this hard work striping and adding colors for a baby gift. All you need is 1 ball of Ambiente and this simple free pattern to make the Zippy hat. You can find the yarn in store or online. The pattern can be found in Ravelry here.
Madison Beanie
How could we not talk about a hat with that name? Using 1 skein of Malabrigo Rasta or Be Wool and a US13 & 15 needle, you can have a hat in a few hours. The Madison Beanie is a beginner friendly pattern using basic knit and purl stitches. Of course, we had to match up some Rasta and Be Wool with our cute pom poms. Yarn is available online or in store. Pom poms are only available in store.
Balloon Jacket by PetiteKnit
The Balloon Jacket by PetiteKnit is a cozy, quick knit for beginning sweater knitters. Knit in garter stitch with an oversized fit and balloon sleeves, the length can be easily adjusted. In fact, by request, Tam made a trendy cropped version, added buttons and adjusted the sleeve length. She used Sandnes Garn Kos held with Tynn Silk Mohair for a super soft & airy texture. Tam's project page with all her changes can be found here.
Stroller Blanket
We've updated our Stroller Blanket kit with some new girl colors. Knit in Berroco Corsica, a cotton & cashmere blend for durability & softness, this blanket is knit in a simple sequence of knits & purls to create a textured effect. Find the kits online or in store.
Casapinka Glamping Blanket KAL
You still have time to join the nesting fun. Casapinka's blanket knit-along starts November 6th. Her pattern will go live on October 30th. If you want to purchase it on Ravelry now, Casapinka will drop it into your library on October 30th. All size and yarn details are on her Ravelry page.

In conjunction with Berroco Yarns, Casapinka has set up kits in all 5 sizes in Berroco Vintage Chunky yarn. We have some of these kits available in the shop but Berroco is also offering drop shipping for all these kits in all the sizes.

How does drop shipping work? You come in the store, pick out one of the prepackaged kits available through Berroco, we order on your behalf & Berroco will ship directly to your address! Just specify that you're ordering for the drop ship program.
Of course, we'd be happy to help you pick out your own unique color combo. You can also choose another chunky weight yarn or hold 2 DK yarns together.
Pom Poms
Hat season means pom pom season! We have faux and real fur in large and medium sizes. The medium sizes fit especially well for children's hats. Available in store only.
Hat for the Homeless
Don't forget, we are collection Hats for the Homeless through mid-November. Kathy (part of our knitting community) is spearheading this project. All hats (and scarves) will be distributed to Nourish New Jersey of Morristown, formerly The Community Soup Kitchen and Outreach Center. Use up that stash to help your community.

Arlenes 2
Arlene made the Yankee Knitter Cardigan by Melinda Goodfellow with Encore's Jelli Beenz and her Baby Crofter in Sirdar's Baby Crofter yarn. They are adorable Arlene!
Yiba's Trio - to finish off our hat issue
Yiba made 3 of The Peace Lily hats by Katrin Schubert. She liked them because they knitted up fast (pattern for Aran/Worsted) and have a really cool pattern. You can make it longer and flip the brim or wear it straight with its pretty silhouette. You can get the pattern for 20% off until tomorrow! Yiba used Wooly Worsted (on head), Berroco Ultra Alpaca, and Woolfolk Tynd with Wooly Worsted held together. Love them!
