A Note from our Executive Director
Dear Lori,
As a parent, I loved creating silly moments with my kids. I still remember a ridiculous dance I did to convince my son to go upstairs and get into bed. I began singing and dancing, “to the left, to the right, and we’re going up the stairs, tushy tushy tushy kick and kick.” He started laughing, I started laughing and we danced upstairs and into bed. My son is turning 31 this month, but I know he still remembers that silly song and dance. Just thinking about that memory makes me smile and fills me with joy.
As a parent or a teacher, it can be hard to remember to be joyful with our children. There is so much to accomplish. Whether the stress is getting teeth brushed or studying for a test, adults spend a lot of time telling the children in our lives what to do. Yet, it is the silliness, the play, the joy, they remember.
One of LEAP’s core values is joy. We believe that everyone deserves joy in their life, and that part of our work is to cultivate and celebrate joy.
April is Child Abuse Prevention month. It’s serious business, preventing child abuse. One thing every adult can do is to build positive, healthy and joyful relationships with the children in your life. This month, I encourage you to be silly, to do something joyful and unexpected, and to create some joyful memories.
