Joy=the Reverse of Happiness

Joy is distinctly a Christian word and a Christian thing. It is the reverse of happiness. Happiness is the result of what happens of an agreeable sort. Joy has its springs deep down inside. And that spring never runs dry, no matter what happens. Only Jesus gives that joy. He had joy, singing its music within, even under the shadow of the cross.

- Samuel Dickey Gordon, 1859-1936

Calling Sunday School Volunteers!

Do you love children and want to see them grow in their faith? Join one of our Sunday School Volunteer teams! No experience is needed. We have three age groups from 3 year-olds through 3rd grade. This is a minimum time commitment and all supplies will be gathered for you. Volunteer 3 – 5 times per semester. If you are interested or want to learn more, contact Michele Murphy at michele@scapc.org.

The Art of Organized DisORGANization

The removal of our 1929/1980 Austin sanctuary organ is underway, making way for Orgues Létourneau Limitée's Opus 138, the installation of which will commence in January of 2025.

The music track here features UK organist Jonathan Scott. His complete peformance of Wagner's "The Ride of the Valkyries" may be found on the Scott Brothers Duo YouTube channel.

Recording: Chris Currie Preaches at Montreat

Last Sunday, SCAPC's own Chris Currie preached at the Montreat Conference Center as part of their Summer Worship Series. The service recording can be found at this link. While there, Chris and others got to meet up with Bonnie Shoemaker, longtime SCAPC church and staff member who moved to North Carolina last spring.

"Donut" Forget!

On Sunday, August 11 we will celebrate our final Summer Sunday with donuts served in the coffee area following the 9:30 a.m. worship service.

Blessing of the Backpacks

Our next ‘Worship Short’ will be a Blessing of the Backpacks on Sunday, August 11 from 6-7:30 p.m. at Okra Abbey Community Garden on the corner of Hickory and Eagle Streets. Join us for family games and activities, dinner, worship (including a back-to-school backpack blessing for students), and mission outreach to our neighbors in Pigeon Town.

Volunteers Needed for Crescent City Café

YAF (Young Adults & Families) are looking for volunteers of all ages 16 and older to help serve breakfast to unhoused individuals at Crescent City Café on Saturday, August 17 from 7:30-10:30 a.m. The Café is one of our community ministry partners and is located at Rayne Memorial United Methodist Church, 3900 St. Charles Avenue. They offer healthy and delicious hot meals in a restaurant-style atmosphere. Please email Tyler Wheeler with any questions or to sign up!

Movie Night

Last Sunday evening a fun crowd gathered to view Inside Out which was the final movie in our "Faith in Film" sermon series. To view Sunday's worship service, with a sermon by Sarah Chancellor-Watson that focused on the film, click here. For her sermon transcript, click here.

PW Donation to Young Adult Volunteers (YAVs)

Presbyterian Women donated to the departing Young Adult Volunteers with supplies to restock their supply closet on Saturday, saving the incoming youth money for food in the new year start-up. Eleven months ago Dan, Caitlin and Stefan came to New Orleans to devote their time and energy to this city. We send them off with our thanks. Tyler Wheeler helped clean the Big Green House in the closing efforts. Matt McCann, Lee and Kathy Randall joined the YAVs for a send-off picnic in City Park later in the day.

Montreat Youth Conference

Last week 20 of our youth attended the Montreat Youth Conference and learned about "Planting Peace" in the world!
