JPCC Happenings - June 2021
We hope you will join us for some of the incredible programs and classes we have coming up at Joyner Park Community Center! If there is something you would like to see offered, but do not see it in the RecConnect or listed below, please reach out to us! Currently, the center offers two-hour time slots for Open Play Pickleball and one-hour slots for the walking track and fitness room! Visit wakeforestnc.recdesk.com to register for a time slot! Please note: Cleanings are performed every hour, and you must have a membership in order to register for the open time slots.
The Wake Forest Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Department continues to take all reasonable precautions to best promote the health and safety of our community. Public health is a shared responsibility, and it is one we take very seriously. Face coverings are strongly encouraged for unvaccinated patrons and required of patrons ages 5-12 at all times while inside JPCC and all park facilities.

Operating Schedule
We are currently operating according to the following modified schedule:
  • Monday-Friday - 8 am-Noon; Noon-4 pm (business hours only with appointment); 4-8:30 pm
  • Saturday - 8 am-Noon
  • Sunday – Closed

Beginning Monday, June 7, we will operate according to the following schedule:

  • Monday-Friday - 8 a.m.-8:30 p.m.
  • Saturday - 8 a.m.-Noon
  • Sunday – Closed
Rec Cards
Wake Forest residents and non-residents ages 11 and older must have a Recreation Card (Rec Card) to access amenities offered at PRCR facilities, including JPCC. Rec Cards are free for Wake Forest residents. The following fees apply for people who live outside the Wake Forest town limits and do not pay Wake Forest property taxes: Individual, $25; Family, $50. Any non-residents who prefer not to purchase a Rec Card, must pay a $5 Non-Rec Card Holder fee to utilize the amenities. An online profile must be created, and the fee paid to register for selected activity time slots.
 
To obtain a Rec Card, first create an online profile. Then, visit the JPCC to have your picture taken and present proof of residency. Acceptable forms of proof include a valid picture ID with your current address, a current utility bill with your street address, or other document that includes your full name and address. Classes
Dance 4 Tots I (ages 2-3) 
Your little one will be on their tiny feet in no time, all while learning ballet, tap, music and creative movement. Movement exploration will teach the difference from left and right, how to balance, hop, skip, and jump.
Kids will have a tale to tell after enjoying storybook time then diving into the kitchen. From cookies to donuts, your aspiring chefs will not want to miss this book-themed cooking extravaganza! Parent participation is required.

Our exciting program for kids will develop your child’s focus, self-esteem, self-confidence, and overall sense of purpose! Little Lions opens the door by introducing participants to important life skills such as, focus, teamwork, and memory through fun and motivational training. Additional $50 fee paid to instructor for uniform and t-shirt at first class.

Mini Ballroom Dance (ages 4-8) 
Launch your little one into the world of International Ballroom and Latin dancing. We will focus on an all-encompassing introduction to popular dance steps such as cha-cha-cha and waltz, body control work such as balance and understanding direction, creativity, expression through music, and group work.

Dance 4 Tots II (ages 4-6) 
Is your dancer ready for a more age-appropriate challenge? This next-level dance class will have your little one on their tiny feet in no time! They will learn ballet, tap, music, and creative movement and will explore movements that teach the difference from left and right, and how to balance, hop, skip, and jump.

Is your little one always dancing when the radio comes on? Do they enjoy high energy movement? If so, this is a great beginner class to engage in dance choreography that is fun, creative, and energizing.

Kidz Yoga (ages 5-10) 
Your child will learn Yoga through asanas or postures that highlight and emphasize connection and community concepts. We will incorporate themes, stories, songs, activities to keep class fresh and fun!

This class introduces your student to the wonderful world of ballet. In this class, your child will learn basic ballet positions, barre, across the floor, and the magical history of the ballet.

This class uses Scratch, a coding platform developed by MIT, as a tool to teach core computer science and coding concepts such as loop, conditional, motion, and sensing. Students will also work on a project in each session ranging from animation, games, to graphic design and storytelling, etc.

This beginner class covers simple self-defense techniques, all while aiding in building self-confidence! The benefit for younger participants will be developing concentration and focus, while the young at heart will find an increase in fitness levels! Adults will benefit by improving flexibility, strength, muscle tone, and an overall greater discipline.

Your child will be extremely excited about this energetic class! Through choreography that is fun, creative, and challenging, participants will enjoy performing these movements while creating dances that will exhibit today's latest dance moves and music styles.

Class sessions will be geared to musicality and learning how to “read” music, fundamental technique, and education of one's body through movement. Benefits in this class vary from building self-confidence, knowing how to socially dance, and appreciating different music genres. 
Sa | Jun 5 – 26 | 11-12pm

This technical and foundational building class will include skills from the Dance 4 TOTS class. However, prior experience is not required. Students will learn ballet, tap, music and creative movement weekly. Movement exploration will help teach the difference between left and right, how to balance, hop, skip and jump. Students will participate in shows, parades, and end of year recitals. Consistent participation is required to perform..

Your student will learn the basics of the mobile programming environment and how to code their very own apps. They will explore how to employ text, device sensors, and even the camera to build projects and games that involve image recognition, word games, and riddles!

Join this high-energy, synchronized, rhythmic dance building class that will have you wanting more! The moves and technique draw from ballet, jazz, modern dance, hip hop, and gymnastics. This movement class challenges your discipline, originality, passion, and teaches you to compete with yourself to become the best dancer!

This introduction to yoga class teaches flexibility while learning to listen and communicate with the body in a new way. You will learn to work with the body to express the best pose for the individual. Students are requested to bring a yoga mat. 
M | Jun 7 – 28 | 7:15 – 8:15pm

A basic introduction to Tai Chi movement with a focus on breathing with gentle, slow fluid body movements. This practice is excellent for calming the busy mind and suitable for all fitness levels! Tai Chi is a tonic for the body, mind and spirit. 
Sa | Jun 12 – 26 | 10:15 – 11am

Incorporate challenging moves like bear crawls, jump squats, burpies and more in a fun and encouraging environment! Intense activity alternated with intervals of lighter ativity through fun personal challenges and relay races. It's all about pushing yourself to your max and rooting each other on! Tell your friends and let's get boot camping! Classes will be held outside in the park with some use of the indoor facility. 
M | Jun 21 – July 6 | 5 – 5:45pm  
Fees: Resident $43 | Non-Resident $50 
 
Barre Fit combines attributes of Pilates, dance and functional fitness training for a full body workout. The classes are designed to fatigue your muscles through proper form and small isolated movements. You will feel the burn in this fast paced workout where every minute counts! This class can be done in your barefeet or with grippy socks and you will also need a yoga mat. 
M | Jun 21 – July 6 | 6 – 6:55pm

In this fun & energetic Line Dance class, you’ll learn fun dances to all types of music. It’s time to get your body up & moving to some fun & groovy dance moves. No experience or partner required. Line Dancing is a contactless form of dance. This class is all about meeting new friends and having fun!

Feel comfortable on the dance floor while enjoying various types of music! You will learn popular basic ballroom dance steps like Tango, Foxtrot, Waltz, Rumba, ChaCha and Swing!

Attention all adults... tonight is your night to get out and learn some new dance moves, while getting into shape. This class led by our professional teaching staff is a high energy, body moving class that will include isolated workouts to tone and lose weight all while learning various line dances, moving our bodies to the rhythm and having a great time! Do not miss out on this great opportunity for some fun me time! Pay as you go or purchase a six week session at a discount! Uniform: Workout or comfortable clothing. Sneakers.

Zumba (ages 18 & up) 
Ditch the workout and join the party! Come out and join us for a workout like none other! We will teach you steps to popular dances like salsa, merengue, cumbia, reggaeton, hip-hop, belly dancing and more. We take the "work" out of workout, by mixing low-intensity and high-intensity moves for an interval-style, calorie-burning dance fitness party. Moves are catered to all experience levels.

Surf's up! Grab your board and let's go. Learn how to flood, pipe, and add embellishments to your cookie surfboard, sunglasses, and bathing suits. Be sure to grab your beach towel cookie and we may even find a crab or two. All skill levels are welcome.

This mommy or dad and me class is designed to allow moms and dads to participate in an exercise program, along with interacting with their kiddos and other parents. Class is 45 minutes, with the majority of the class including cardio and body weight/band strengthening while entertaining the kids by moving around the facility or park (weather permitting). The last 10 minutes will include an activity that all can enjoy! Strollers are required. 
T | Jun 22 – July 13 | 10 – 10:45am

Leave the yoga mat at home and get the benefits of yoga with the support of a chair. With our expert-led class, you will explore the world of yoga. All experience levels welcomed.
