 Featured speaker for July luncheon

The Honorable Robert F. "Bob" Diaz

County Court Judge

Judge of the 17th Judicial Circuit of Florida

Judge Robert F. "Bob" Diaz was born in Hialeah, Florida on May 5, 1953. He graduated from Hialeah High School and Miami-Dade Community College. After completing his Bachelor's Degree at Florida International University, Judge Diaz moved to Broward County in 1978. He attended Nova Southeastern University Law School, graduating with his Juris Doctor degree in 1984.

Judge Diaz started his legal career as an Assistant Public Defender and had 125 jury trials in 8 years. He was awarded the "Public Defender of the Year" for trying 25 jury trials in one year. On July 15, 1992, Judge Diaz was appointed to the County Court bench and had to begin an immediate campaign to retain his seat where two other candidates had been campaigning for a year. With a September 3rd primary and November general election, Judge Diaz had to be a judge during the day and then travel throughout Broward County meeting as many people as he could. With a lot of hard work, great help from family and friends, and the citizens of Broward County, Judge Diaz was elected in November 1992 with the Broward County record for votes in a judicial election. Judge Diaz won by 109,000 votes, and his record stood until 2008.

Since 1992, Judge Diaz has not only served the public as a judge, he has done many things in the community and the legal field. Judge Diaz has been an Adjunct Professor of Law at Nova Law School for 23 years. He serves as the Liaison for the Judicial Internship Program and serves on the Board of Governors of the Law School. Judge Diaz has been a faculty member of New Judges College for 17 years, where he teaches all new judges in the State of Florida. He is also a faculty member of the County Court Judges conference and the College of Advanced Judicial Studies. Judge Diaz is a faculty member of the National Institute of Trial Advocacy (N.I.T.A.) where he teaches lawyers how to try cases in the courtroom.

Judge Diaz and his wife Dian, are presidents of the Home and School Association at St. Anthony School. He has coached basketball for both varsity and junior varsity girls and boys for 7 years. They have been actively involved as volunteers and served for 10 years.

Judge Diaz also teaches judges, lawyers, law students, and high school and middle school students about the law and the profession through his many volunteer efforts in the community.

Judge Diaz is married to Dian Diaz and they reside in Fort Lauderdale with their daughter.
