Tristan Alexander Open Judo Tournament in Colwood draws 200 Participants | |
This past weekend was the inaugural Tristan Alexander Open in Colwood, April 20, 2024. Judokas from all over BC were in attendance to compete, celebrate and remember Tristan Alexander. This event was covered by the Saanich News:
Judo athletes across B.C. showed courage at the inaugural Tristan Alexander Memorial Open in Colwood’s Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre on Saturday, April 20.
“Tristan would have been humbled,” said Ken Jolley, a former coach of Alexander and instructor at the Victoria Judo Club.
Alexander was a former provincial and national judo champion who died in 2021 after a snowboarding accident on Mount Washington. He won the Canadian Open Nationals under 21 competition in 2018 and competed in various Western Canada Summer Games, winning bronze in 2018 and silver in 2019.
The new tournament saw athletes from across B.C. compete, including some of Alexander’s former teammates who had not competed in some time, according to event organizer Jeremy Grant.
“It was out of respect for his memory. That was amazing for me to see,” said Grant.
The open saw about 200 competitors in various age groups and skill levels. Some age groups on display were under-8, under-10, under-12, under-14, under-16, under-18, under-21, and more.

Suffering in silence: Men’s and boys’ mental health are still overlooked in sport - By Michael Kehler and Gabriel Knott-Fayle
This article was written by Michael Kehler and Gabriel Knott-Fayle, and was posted on the The Sport Information Resource Centre website (sirc.ca). It offers a perspective on self-care, health and safety, and emotional vulnerability amongst boys and men in sport. Below is the article:
For men and boys, caring about sport typically conjures images of passionate competition and fighting for the win.
This understanding of care leaves little room for self-care, health and safety, and emotional vulnerability — topics that are fraught with risks for boys and men in a sport culture of hypermasculinity.
The National Hockey League Players’ Association recently released its First Line Program to support player mental health. It signals that men’s hockey is finally acknowledging the long-known fact that “a hockey player struggling with mental health would have done so in silence.”
Flames Head Coach Ryan Huska recently told the Calgary Herald that talking openly about mental health is “kind of becoming the norm now, that people aren’t afraid to voice it.” Corey Hirsch, a retired goaltender recently told CBC News, “the game itself wasn’t the issue, the issue is the stigma of having to be a tough man.”
Similarly, in a recent interview on the Diary of a CEO podcast France and Arsenal soccer legend, Thierry Henry, spoke of the depression he suffered throughout his career:
“I’m a human being. I have feelings. Throughout my career and since I was born, I must have been in depression. Did I know it? No, did I do something about it? Obviously not, but I adapted.”
A culture of silence
There are severe problems with the culture of masculinity in men’s sport — one that means men and boys must adapt rather than seek help and tough it out rather than take a step back. This culture of silence and bullying means men and boys have been reluctant to speak up and speak out about safety and sexual assaults. It has created an environment where men and boys feel pressured to be silent about their own mental health.
