Today February 28 is Pink Shirt Day - Anti-Bullying Day
Judo BC supports Pink Shirt Day and wears a pink shirt to take a stance against bullying. Judo BC’s goal is to assure that all athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers participate in a safe and inclusive training and competitive atmosphere that is free of abuse, harassment and discrimination. We are committed to creating a safe and inclusive environment that respects the participants personal goals and is free from all forms of maltreatment.
And we encourage you to also wear a pink shirt and join us in our stance against bullying. Here's a bit more info on Pink Shirt Day:
History of Pink Shirt Day
The original event was organized in 2007 by two grade 12 students named David Shepherd and Travis Price of Berwick, Nova Scotia, who bought and distributed 50 pink shirts after a ninth-grade student Chuck McNeill was bullied for wearing a pink polo shirt during the first day of school at Central Kings Rural High School in Cambridge, Nova Scotia.
In recognition of this act of kindness, Nova Scotia proclaimed the second Thursday of September Stand Up Against Bullying Day.
It spurned other similar proclamations, such as provincial Anti-Bullying Day in B.C. on Feb. 27 (declared in 2008) and May 4 as United Nations Anti-Bullying Day (declared by the United Nations in 2012.)
Now, the last Wednesday each February is Canada’s national Pink Shirt/anti-bullying day.
Many countries now recognize specific days for raising awareness about the prevention of bullying and promoting kindness and inclusion.
What is Bullying?
According to Public Safety Canada, bullying is defined as acts of intentional harm repeated over time in a relationship where an imbalance of power exists. This can take various forms, including physical, verbal and cyber (online bullying).
According to Statistics Canada's 2019 Canadian Health Survey on Children and Youth (CHSCY), the majority of Canadian youth aged 12 to 17 (71 per cent) reported experiencing at least one form of bullying through the year.

Beware of Phishing Emails that Appear to be From Judo BC
There are lots of phishing emails going out again that appear to be from Judo BC or someone associated with Judo BC.
If you get a request for a favour from anyone associated with Judo BC it almost certainly a phishing attempt. You can check by looking at the email address carefully. It may look like it is coming from someone you know but if you look more closely it will be from a different email address. Here is an example:
| |
The favour requested by email is often purchasing gift cards. No one from Judo BC should ever ask you to purchase gift cards on their behalf or any other similar request. If you are unsure, please forward the email to executivedirector@judobc.ca.
There is nothing we can do at our end to prevent this as the culprits are constantly changing their email addresses.
