Message from the Referee Committee Chair

Happy New Year!

On the weekend of January 28th and 29th, the Abbotsford Judo Club and Judo BC will be hosting the Pacific International. This event is for National "C" and above referees, though Provincial level referees may referee U10 and U12 matches. We encourage all referees, Provincial, National, and International to attend the referee meeting/seminar at 7pm on Friday January 27th. Provincial Level referees are also encouraged to support this event after the U10 and U12 divisions by scoring and timekeeping. This event always draws big numbers from across the country and around the Pacific Northwest. Referee numbers are tight and we need everyone's support.

February, is another brief pause for most referees in BC, but March brings three more tournaments, Edmonton International (March 10-12), The Okanagan Open (March 18th), and The BC Winter Games (March 23-26). All are fantastic events for developing referees, but the BC Winter Games are of special interest. If you are a Provincial Level Referee, looking to move on to the National level at some point, and have never refereed at this even before, we are looking for you. If you are available March 23rd to the 26th, Please let the Referee Committee know as soon as possible.

Yours in judo,

Free Training for Bystanders Intervention in Sport

Join VvaSport BC to learn practical and safe techniques to stand up for others! We've partnered with Right to Be to customize their Bystander Intervention in Sport course, and have 5000 places available per session - invite your teammates!

We all have a responsibility to do something when we see harassment happening, but too often we freeze.

Bystander intervention gives us tools to intervene without compromising our own safety. When we intervene, we don’t just reduce trauma for the person being maltreated. We also start to chip away at the culture that allows maltreatment to be so prevalent.

In this free training, our goal is to give participants the tools to intervene the next time they witness maltreatment in the sports community. These sessions are for everyone: youth participants, coaches, parents, and anyone who wants to get better at speaking up when things aren't right.
