Judo BC e-Newsletter
In Loving Memory of
David Magnusson
It is with great sadness that we inform the judo community of the passing of David Magnusson, Judo BC Secretary from 1997 to 2002 and President from 2003 to 2009. Dave was a founding a member of the Abbotsford Judo Club and created the blueprints for the Abbotsford Dojo. Our collective hearts go out to the Magnusson family.

"I have a great deal of respect for Dave and how he led Judo BC. He became President during a fractious time and provided a calming influence that helped get the organization back on an even keel. Dave didn't get upset or personal, he was always willing to listen to ideas. His decisions were always based on what was best for the athletes and participants of Judo in BC and he instilled that into the Board throughout his tenure and beyond."
~ Sandy Kent, Judo BC President 2009 to 2018
BC Restart Plan
The BC Government announced it's 4 step restart plan this afternoon. Below is a high level chart showing the progression for sports.
We don't yet have the details for what this will mean for judo but xpected more information in the coming weeks. Here is what we do know:

  • Step 1 – (starting today) - no changes
  • Step 2 – (starting no sooner than June 15) - adults will be allowed back to judo but no information is available at this point as to the level of contact that will be permitted
  • Step 3 – (starting no sooner than July 1) – not sure yet what this step will look like for judo
  • Step 4 – (starting no sooner than Sept 7) – return of normal judo competitions will be allowed. We are assuming this also means we will be back to normal (pre-COVID-19) club activities.

All of these dates are subject to the following data:

  • Declining COVID-19 case counts;
  • Increasing vaccination rate in people 18+;
  • Declining COVID-19 hospitalizations, including critical care; and
  • Declining COVID-19 mortality rate.

For more general information please see the BC Government restart plan - https://news.gov.bc.ca/files/BCRestartPlan.pdf

Details of the sport restart plan will be made available as soon as they are approved by the Provincial Health Authorities.

Mental Health in Sport
From coach.ca

May 3, 2021 – The Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) is pleased to launch a new eLearning module titled Mental Health in Sport. In collaboration with the Canadian Centre for Mental Health in Sport (CCMHS), the new module was developed to educate coaches about mental health to empower them to effectively play a role in supporting the well-being of the participants in their sport program, while also supporting their own mental health.

Mental health impacts the quality of life and performance of both sport participants and coaches. By launching during #MentaHealthWeek, the CAC and CCMHS hope that coaches and sport participants alike will understand the importance of learning more about this subject and implement some of the importance practices highlighted within the module.

The 45-minute module is available for free in the Locker, the Coaching Association of Canada’s online platform for eLearning, event registration and tracking coach transcripts. Coaches who are maintaining their trained or certified status within the NCCP will receive 1 Professional Development (PD) point upon completing this module.
