Meet Presidential Candidate Russ Girtz
Hello to all my fellow pitchers in Minnesota. My name is Russ Girtz and I have submitted my name to be considered by you to be the next leader of your MGSHPA. I started playing as a youth and participated in the World Tournament in Genola which was 1 mile from the farm where I grew up. After some years away I have participated in tournaments and leagues again for the past 10 years. I currently play in the Clank & Thud and Santiago leagues in central Minnesota.
With your support and passion for pitching I will build from the success of past leaders to ensure that we all have enjoyable and competitive pitching experiences. I have experience with project management and will look for your ideas and input to grow our sport with fairness and transparency.
If elected, I will work with the leadership team at both the State and National levels to advocate for all of you as we work together to bring more players to our clubs.

MINNESOTA 2024 TEAM WORLD PLAYERS
| |
|
Four teams represent MN in Beloit WI at 2024 Team World
By Janet Larson
There are so many reasons to love this tournament, the fact that it is unique, fun and challenging is just the beginning. Organizing teams begins in January. Josh Olson chooses Minnesota’s top two teams based on ringer % and the pitcher’s willingness to participate. After that, anyone can put together a team of 4-5 pitchers, but there can be no more than three 30’ pitchers on a team. This year you needed a team with a combined average above 44%. Five MN teams applied this year, and for the first time in Team World history, their limit of 24 teams was surpassed by five and MN #5 did not make the cut. If there are multiple teams from any state, the combined average of those teams determines their inclusion in the tournament. Tom Prokop made his first appearance on MN #1. While Jerry Werk, Gary Boots, Janet Roubinek and Russ Girtz were rookies to Team World. Of the 2024 MN participants, Mark Smith had the longest history of Team World appearances, this being his 16th year and he also holds the highest overall TW combined ringer percent at 54.65%. Unlike the World Tournament, here the top pitchers in all divisions compete against each other. MN was well represented with seven 40’ men, six 30’ elders and six 30’ women. This tournament tests your endurance! With a full schedule of 24 teams and 40 shoe games, you play nine games on Friday, ten on Saturday and 4 more on Sunday. That may get you to the Championship round where you could play another 4 games.
As for uniqueness, each round starts with a coin flip. The 24 courts are set up in six color coded groups of four. The teams playing have four singles games going at the same time. The coin toss determines which team gets to decide the pitcher pairings. Winning the coin toss is a matter of chance that can make a huge difference in the outcome of wins and losses. Michelle Foard did an amazing job of taking pictures and videos throughout the weekend and she posted a great video showing the colored coded mat used for the coin flip. Everyone has their own strategy for winning the coin toss, I would recommend standing on the opposite side of the mat from Cody Olson, who is the unofficial coin toss person for MN #1. All of this is what adds to the fun, there is a lot of joking around and ribbing going on throughout the weekend. The coin toss made a big difference when MN #4 pitched California in game #22. Having won the toss, they were able to put Andy Olson up against their extremely good Junior pitcher Hastiin Begaye, purposely sacrificing that game in order to win the other three. This strategy worked! Andy pitched a respectable 40% game in his loss to Begaye, while Nathan Dehkes & Eric Dehkes had 60% games and Janet Larson threw 57.5%, to take three wins. This ultimately moved CA down one notch and MN #1 up one into seventh place and a chance to go to the playoff round for the first time since 2018. MN #1 was made up of Pat Stump, Al Larson, Tom Prokop and Josh Olson. Winning 55 of their 92 games in the preliminary round, with a team average of 52.93%, they finished the playoff round in 7th place. Individually they pitched between 50% and 56.88%, with Al having the highest percentage and Pat winning the most games, 16 of 24. MN #2 was led by Jeff Washburn, who average 47.5%, Gary Boots led MN#3 with 47.74%, and Nathan Dehkes led MN#4 with 51.48%.
There is competition on so many levels in this tournament; individually like in any tournament, as a team against other teams, as a state against other states, as a team simply trying to move up in the standings. If any individual pitches a 70% game, their name is placed in a drawing to win a block of cheese for each member of their team. There are opportunities to meet and visit with some of the most elite pitchers in the world. Pat Stumpf, Helen Hawkinson, Gary Boots and Melisa Dehkes each got the opportunity to pitch with Alan Francis. Pat, Janet Larson, Janet Roubinex and Mark Smith pitched with Sarah Chaffee, Mark even got to witness one of her 90% games up close.
We are grateful to those who came to watch us. We were honored to have Lu Cave in attendance. She represented MN for 14 years back in the 1980’s and ‘90’s when MN was the team to beat. She averaged 50.68% in those years and her best performance was in 1992 when she averaged 64.21%. If anyone is interested in learning more about the history of Team World and Minnesota’s remarkable presence there I would recommend going to Wisconsin’s website www.whpahorseshoes.com. I would also recommend listening to Dalton Rakestraw’s podcast “The Court Reporter” and his episode “Team World w/Jeff Secord”.

From the Editor

Congratulations to all of the pitchers who represented MN at the Team World Tournament in Beloit, WI. The Beloit Horseshoe Club does an excellent job putting on this wonderful event.
I also want to extend my best wishes to all of our players traveling to the 2024 World Tournament In Kennewick WA. MN will be well represented and our pitchers always do well in this annual event.
The 2024 MN State Tournament will be a 3 day event this year, and we need to see how well this works. We will be collecting information during the entire event and will be discussing and analyzing this data in upcoming meetings. All of us need to have patience dealing with this new format, and to offer constructive criticism if needed. It would be best to put your ideas and suggestions in written form, perhaps an email, and send it to any of the state officers.
The Officers and Directors of the MGSHPA are always striving to improve our charter and make things better and more efficient. Of course we need your help and support to achieve this goal. So if you see something that could be done better, please share and be part of the solution.
If you know anyone who may be interested in becoming part of our horseshoe family, always remember to forward these Digest emails to them as a sample of our sport. Encourage them to do the FAST, FREE, and SECURE sign up for both Ringer Digest and NHPA Newsline.

From the President
By Ray Pierce Jr
Hello pitchers. I hope this letter finds you pitchin’ and a grinnin’. We are about 2 months away from the first ever 3 day State Tournament. This is a reminder that we will be pitching shoes earlier in the day on Friday and ending the tournament Sunday. Our annual meeting will be on Saturday this year following the morning session and before the banquet. If anyone has any ideas for entertainment this year let me know. I am excited to see how we like the new format.
I am writing this just days before the Toby Memorial. Once again we will have $600 per class minimum and we filled all 32 spots. We have added meat raffles as well as our annual raffle drawing to the days events.
One last reminder about the Womens Elder class. It takes at least 4 women to hold this class at the state tournament.
Have fun pitching, Anna and I hope to see you on the courts.
Ray Pierce Jr.

2024 is over halfway done HOW crazy is that. By the time you are reading this it is already July 1st. I am just getting ready to get packed up for the Horseshoe Tour Tournament that is down in Austin MN. I’d like to take this time to Congratulate Minnesota Team #1(Al Larson, Pat Stumpf, Tom Prokop and Myself) that made the Play-Off’s this year in the Team World Tournament, Janet Larson has a very good Tournament recap on the entire tournament. Congratulations to Missouri #1, Missouri #1 eliminated Minnesota #1 3-1 in the first round, I like to think we got Missouri #1 in the mind set to eventually win the Finals, lol.

Tournament Recaps from Josh Olson Classic and Bertha Open
We had 40 for Saturday’s Josh Olson Classic Horseshoe Tournament that was held in Bertha this year, the Bertha Open had 23 on Sunday the same weekend. It was a great Turnout for both Tournaments considering it was Father’s Day Weekend. Thank you to everyone who came out to play, without the pitchers we have no tournaments! Special Thanks to Lu Cave who not only played on Saturday, but stayed and kept score the rest of the day and came back on Sunday and helped keep score both shifts as well! And finally, thank you to my mom, Dad and brother Cody. Without all their help with concessions and keeping score we would have been scrambling.

State Tournament 2024
A THREE DAY TOURNAMENT
Below is a “IDEA” of what the schedule would possibly look like for a 3-Day State Tournament this year.
Please note, this is an idea of what it might look like.
On Friday we would most likely see most of the Elders if not ALL the elders pitch that day, and then we would have to figure out who else would play Friday in the evening most likely. My best guess would be that the lower Average 40ft pitchers (30% and lower) and possibly some of the women’s classes (21% and lower) may pitch Friday evening as well.
We will not have a way to keep track of which day you cannot pitch, so please sign up and if it doesn’t work after the schedule comes out, we will play it by ear and see what we can possibly do to fit you in if possible.
The Online signup will be available around the same time the newest Digest comes out (so when you are reading this most likely). If we get more than 128 pitchers that sign up for the State Tournament which I hope, we do then the schedule will be tighter, and we will be using an early shift Friday morning and or a additional shift Sunday.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.
Hope to see you in Genola for the State Tournament!

Hello Horseshoe Family
Happy Upcoming 4th of July holiday! Ray and I are getting ready to spend the week at the lake. Pontoon is ready, camper stocked and half of the house has been moved out to the lake. (Ray exaggerates!!! It was only 3 trips.) We always have about thirty family members camping and Ray, Ryan and Rocky always march with the Honor Guard in the parades. Summer fun swimming, fishing and campfires!!!!
The Hibbing Toby Neuenschwander Memorial Horseshoe Tournament was held June 29th and was a success. We had a full schedule with 32 entries and a fun day of pitching horseshoes. Thank everyone who traveled to Hibbing to participate in the tournament and who bought tickets for the raffle. We are thankful that our pits are indoors as the "Menopause" Mother Nature was not feeling good and tried to rain us out! Now looking forward to the World Tournament in August and the State Tournament in September. Ray and I are flying out to Washington the end of July to pitch in the Worlds and will visit some friends out there. We will be attending the NHPA meeting on Sunday in Washington and I will let everyone know of the Bylaws changes that will be discussed or passed.
Hope everyone has an enjoyable summer and gets to participate in the horseshoe tournaments throughout the state.

South Vice President
by Jeff Washburn
Summer greetings to all our fellow horseshoe pitchers. With all the rain MN has received over the past few weeks, a large portion of the state is still underwater. Mother nature seems to be evening out the precipitation from the lack of snow received last winter. I’m not sure what is worse, lots of snow or lots of rain. Probably lots of rain and the flooding that comes with it. It is very sad to see all the flooding taking place and the damage it causes not only to autos, homes, businesses, property, and people’s lives, but also to the farms and crops across the state.
On a more positive note, our MGSHPA summer tournament schedule is well underway with several clubs already having completed their tournaments. Please look at our MGSHPA website and give some thought to see which of the remaining tourneys in July and August might fit into your schedule prior to our State Tournament on Labor Day weekend. Speaking of our State Tournament, information should be available very shortly on our website. For the past two years, our membership has been asking for a 3-day State tournament to be held on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, which will allow families to enjoy the Labor Day holiday devoid of horseshoe pitching. I, along with many others are hoping for a very successful 3-day State Tournament experience for our pitchers and their families. Keep in mind, our State Tournament banquet will be held at the Pierz ballroom on Saturday night, August 31st, instead of the usual Sunday night. Please check with the MGSHPA website in early July for more details on our State Tournament.
As many know, our MGSHPA President Ray Pierce, Jr, is stepping down after the 2024 State Tournament. If you see Ray this summer, please give him your thanks for the work and effort he put into our association over the past several years. As of June 1st, Russ Girtz has announced his candidacy to run for President, which will be discussed and voted on at our membership meeting at the State Tournament.
A special good luck wish goes out to all our Minnesota pitchers who will be competing in the World Tournament in the Tri-Cities, Washington. Bring home the bacon!
As we wind our way through the next few months, I hope all of our MGSHPA members and their families and friends enjoy the rest of the summer. Stay safe, and I will see you on the courts.

North Vice President
By Rory Pierce
Hello all quick note from your North Vice-President. Horseshoe season is in full swing and going great. The Toby Neuenschwander memorial open is set for June 29th, by the time you read this it will be over and a new tournament champion will be crowned. The State tournament is right around the corner and as is the World Tournament. Good luck to all Minnesotans pitch straight and on the stake. Once again I’d like to throw out a reminder that the State tournament will only be 3 days this year so plan accordingly. The banquet will be on Sat night this year and the annual meeting will be conducted on Saturday as well. As always the Leaner Lounge will be open and horseshoe topics will be discussed. If you have any questions for me or topics you’d like me to address at the annual meeting please feel free to contact me via email, text or call. @ piercerory78@gmail.com or 218-966-5280. Thank you and I look forward to seeing you all on the courts.

Promotion and News Media
By Michelle Foard
Happy Summer All,
I hope everyone had a great spring starting off your leagues and tournaments. We still have more upcoming tournaments this summer.
Just a brief recap of Team World. I was on Team 3 and with Team 5 being cut and my shoulder issues I gave up my spot to Gary Boots as it was his first time going. So we had 3 newbies on Team 3 Russ Girtz, Gary Boots and Janet R. They all really like it. I myself was able to visit and of course video games. I filmed Sarah Chaffee and Alan Francis. If you are on Facebook you can go to the National Horseshoe Pitcher's Association Official Page and find my videos there. I got other great games as well. As always so much fun!
Brooklyn Park Tournament went great this year. No rain out. We had 4 classes. Marlene Knudtson also stopped by to visit with us all. Haven't seen her in a few years. Her and Bob were part of our club.
The Horseshoe Tour came to Austin, Mn the weekend of June 22nd. I went down there Thursday afternoon and met up with Ron and Barb Taylor, Barb Carson, Shelly Martinez and Dalton Rakestraw. We went to the pits and practiced that night. We were hopeful the rain would hold off on Saturday. Friday it was raining so Dalton, Shelly, Barb and I headed to Mall of America. None of them had been before. It was a great time walking around and of course they got their Mn souvenirs. Saturday morning we got up and went to the pits. The road to the park was already covered with 6 inches of water. We got to the pits and the parking lot down by the river was already covered with water. There was a ballfield there and that was covered as well. Shortly after getting there we were told to evacuate as the road was going to be closed. We went to the hotel and then decided Saturday was canceled and let people back out of Sunday as well cuz we weren't sure how high the water was gonna get. Saturday evening Sarah Chaffee and her dad Dean went to the park and used a drone to get photos. The pits were completely under water. It crested early Sunday morning at 21 feet. So sad we couldn't play, but I got to meet lots of people from all over the country. I am hoping to go to the Horseshoe Tour in Louisiana.
Well it's that time to start thinking about State. This year I wanted to make State shirts. This will be a pre-order and pre-pay. I am not gonna put names on them, but there will be room for you to personalize it if you would like to in the future. Please contact me directly with the color and size. FYI if you are between sizes go up a size. The size chart is posted below. The original color I brought to the meeting wasn't so well received. So I have offered 4 color choices. I need orders by August 1st. I will bring them to State for you to pick up. If you aren't going to be at State let me know and I can mail them for the cost of shipping. I will have a few shirts on hand at State, but not many so pre-order is your best bet. The cost is $30 a shirt. You can mail me your money and order or I take PayPal and Venmo. Text or call 612-388-3884.
So far I did get one sponsor. Dr Lisa James DDS who is a prosodontist in Plymouth, Mn. She does restorative dental work. My dental lab works with Dr Lisa James. Her logo will be added to the shirt as well.
I am not making it out to the World Tournament this year. I wanna wish everyone good luck and safe travels. Those that are going you can video your games. Look at getting a mini tri pod with a clip so you can clip to the dividers instead of having a tripod on the court. Hope to see some games. Pitch lots of Ringers!
Michelle Foard
Geez I almost forgot to talk about the Mn Doubles Tournament. Russ Girtz and I are running the Mn Doubles Tournament in Genola, Mn. We are doing a one day tournament on August 17th. This helps fulfill our contract with Genola. Deadline to sign up is August 10th. The cost is $60 per team. It will be walking doubles so you can use your own shoes. We will have concessions and do 50/50 raffle. To sign up text or email me, you and your partners name and then mail me a check or money.

2024 Alexandria Open Tournament Recap
By Janet Larson
We had great weather and a full roster of 32 pitchers for the Alex Open this year.
Pitching in the morning in Class D, Judy Carlson went undefeated, pitching 7.54% over her average and finishing her round robin with 35% game. Jeanine Rodvold took second and Gene Ward claimed the three way tie for 3rd by pitching 2.41% over his average. In Class C the husband and wife team of Gene and Donna Kiefat came out on top in a very competitive group. The group’s entering averages were between 24.26% to 33.81%, but there were seven games over 40% and another three games reaching 50%! Jerald Hagen had one of the 50% games and was 9.76 over average, but finished 5th. Donna and Al Nicholson were also more than 4% over their averages and Donna had the other two 50% games. Al came in 3rd and Donna finished in second place behind Gene whose only loss was to Al.
In the afternoon groups, first place in Class B was claimed by Jim Syverson who was also undefeated, pitching 5.73% over his average, with a high game of 55%. Brian Wipper took second, followed by Jeff Thompson in third, they both finished with 4 wins and three losses. Class A was another highly competitive group with the top three all pitching well over their averages and ending in a three way tie of 6 wins and 1 loss. Jerry Werk was 12.3% over his average at 63.93% with a high game of 72.5%, his only loss was to Gary Boots. Pat Stumpf was 6.94% over her average, her only loss was to Jerry. Gary was 5.8% over his average, pitching 56.43% and his loss was to Pat. Pat had the highest overall average at 72.14% with a high game of 87.50%, 35 ringers out of 40 shoes and yes I can verify that because she had that game against me. Way to go Pat!
Congrats to all!
