Happy Summer All! Horseshoe Season is in full swing. I know our Brooklyn Park league has had several rain outs. Speaking of rain outs the Brooklyn Park Tournament afternoon session was rained out again. The afternoon session managed to get 2 full games in before we had to cancel. The morning session went well. C, D and E classes played in the morning. Thanks to everyone who came out to pitch and attend the meeting.
Sarah has mentioned about taking club photos and sending them in. I would love to do another video of all our clubs. I know it is difficult to get everyone all together. If club Presidents can make it a point by the end of summer to take group photos that would be great. If you have 2 different nights that’s fine you can do 2 different pictures. You can send them to me and I can forward them to Sarah as well to put on the website.
World Tournament is just 3 weeks away. Mn has 24 pitchers going to Sandy, Utah this year. Best of luck and safe travels to all who are going. Speaking of the World Tournament next year it is in Wausau, WI. Its gonna be so close to us! I know several people plan to attend. You need 4 events to attend. Tournaments you attend this summer will count towards the WT. Also if you are in need of more tournaments Russ and I plan to have tournaments again this winter in Becker. Plus Josh will have tournaments in Darwin. So no excuse to not get tournaments done. At our State Tournament I will have WT for Wausau, WI info. If you would like flyers for your club contact me and I can get you some. I am sure Mn will have a big presence at the Wausau World Tournament.
I am going to the World Tournament this year and plan to do coverage. You will be able to check eshoe for updated scores. If for some reason there are issues I will post results on the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association Official Page on Facebook. Of course I will be taking picture and videos. Also videoing a few games as well. I will keep Mn informed on our players as well.
Russ and I will be running the doubles tournament in Genola, Mn on Aug 16th. Great warm up before State. We had a great turn out last year and lots of fun. Concessions will be available as well. It is walking doubles so you can pitch your own shoes.
We are working on getting the State Tournament sign up form online. You can mail in your form for no cost to the secretary. If you pay online there is an extra fee for the credit card. We will also be having the banquet on Saturday evening. If I don’t see you at the World Tournament I hope to see you all at State! Have a great rest of your summer.

From the President

We are ramping up planning and coordination of the 2025 State Tournament and I encourage each of you to find a way to contribute to the success of the tournament through volunteering, recruitment of players, running tournaments, and talking to your friends and neighbors to join in (or at least come check it out). Thanks to all the hard work by the leadership team to promote and support our pitchers.
Please look for opportunities to utilize and care for pits that are in your communities. The more we can keep pits in our parks the more opportunities we create for new pitchers.
Send in your action shots from leagues and tournaments to Michelle and Sarah so they can share to our social media channels. Thanks.
Good luck to pitchers attending the World Tournament this year! As always, please contact me with your questions and suggestions.

Here we are screaming into July already! I also want to wish safe travels to all who are making the trip to the World Tournament in Sandy Utah. Please feel free to stop by and check in with Josh and I at the event. If you don't see us out in the arena, check out the NHPA office. If you are there Saturday morning, Josh is running the World Warmup Tournament. This is a great way to get acclimated to the pitching conditions, and get in some good practice and competition. the State Tournament will also be creeping up quickly. I encourage you to make sure you have the qualifying events needed and then enter. The entry deadline is August 7th, and I believe you can enter online at our state website www.minnesotahorseshoes.com
I wish everyone a safe and happy Independence Day weekend!

On the Court with Josh
The World Tournament is just a few short days away. Salt Lake City/Sandy Utah is where the 2025 World Tournament will take place this year. We have 24 Minnesotan’s making the trip to play, good luck to all of them! Keep an eye on eShoe for results and if you are on social media, I am sure we will have results on the daily for everyone keeping track back home.
I want to take this time to do a short recap of Team World that took place in Beloit back in May. Minnesota had sent 3 teams to compete this year; we saw some great competition make there way to Wisconsin and man was it a tough tournament this year. MN Team #2 would finish in 12th place, just 1 game better than Team #1 who finished 13th this year, and Team #3 would finish in 20th place. Harvey Burkman on Team #2 had a high average on his team with 61.30%, Gary Boots had High average on Team #1 with 57.72%, and Jerry Werk finished with the High Average for Team #3 with 41.82%. Next year we will be looking forward to hopefully get back into the Top 7 and get us a spot back into the play-off/finals again next year!
State Tournament in Genola
DON’T FORGET to sign up for the State Tournament, hopefully by the time you are reading this, we have the signup online in full force. Also, don’t forget that we have other tournaments going on this summer, North Mankato, West St. Paul, Kolacky Days, Leprechaun Open, MN Doubles, Donnelly Threshing Bee…ALL these tournaments would count for not only you to pitch in the State Tournament next year, but also for the World Tournament that will be next door in Wausau Wisconsin. You need 4 events to qualify for the World Tournament.
For the State Tournament, keep an eye out when the schedule comes out. If you are in the Elder Men’s division, the start time will be earlier than it has been in the past. More than likely (Depending) on the total number of entries the Elder Men will pitch around 11/1pm on Friday. The other part of the week’s schedule will be “TBD” once we get the total number of entries.
One more thing, Tournament Directors, PLEASE Start thinking about the Fall/Winter 2025 season October-Dec. The sooner dates on the calendar the better! Let’s get the word out to everyone about the next upcoming tournament. Bring someone along at the next one, let’s do our part to get the State Tournament attendance up and let’s have fun while we do it!

South Vice President
by Jeff Washburn
Hello to all our Minnesota horseshoe pitchers, friends, and families. Summer is here; however my furnace and air conditioner seem to have been alternating running over the past few weeks. Thanks to the rain, our trees, flowers, and lawns have never been greener, which is a good thing. The persistent rain has cancelled some of our league nights in the Twin Cities, as well as the afternoon session of the Brooklyn Park tourney which was 2 out of the last 3 years.
Summer leagues are now in full swing, as well as the completion of several of our MN sanctioned tournaments. I hope many of you are planning on attending some of the remaining tournaments, as well as our State Tournament which will be held again in Genola on Labor Day weekend. Please take a look at our MGSHPA website and give some thought to see which of the remaining tourneys in July and August might fit into your schedule. I have my tournaments all marked off. The annual banquet during our State Tournament weekend will be at the Pierz Ballroom again on Saturday, August 30th. One hopefully positive change in scheduling at this year’s State Tournament will have the Elders pitching earlier on Friday, to not get done so late as in past years. Watch for the schedule when it comes out later this summer. Speaking of our State Tournament, sign up information should be available very shortly on our website.
I want to pass on some information regarding the West St. Paul covered courts. If you haven’t heard, the city of W. St. Paul has made the decision to repurpose the covered pavilion that has been home to the W. St. Paul horseshoe club since 1985. Reasons given to me by city officials were to make this covered space more available for other interests such as the arts, entertainment, music, dance, and a general covered meeting space open to more of the residents of W. St. Paul. Plans are to remove the pits and resurface the flooring sometime in the next few years, I am told. The city is considering installing 4-6 courts (not covered) in the area just to the north of the existing courts, if there are budget dollars available. At this time, the city is making no promises for these potential courts to be installed. I have been in regular contact with the city’s Parks Department officials and will keep a close ear to further developments. The W. St. Paul tournament is Sunday, July 13th, so hopefully many will sign up for what might be the last tournament at this location.
Good luck to all our Minnesota pitchers who will be competing in the World Tournament in Salt Lake City in July. This is a beautiful city, one that I have probably visited 50 times over the past 30 years during my working career. Stay safe, enjoy the summer, your family and friends, and I will see you on the courts. Jeff

Nominations Director
By Helen Hawkinson
Ok its that time of year again to put your thinking caps on and send me forms for candidates. We are looking for Minnesota pitchers for the categories of: Rookie of the Year, Edi Holland Sportsmanship Award, and Scholarship Applications. The deadline of May 1st has passed for the MN Junior Hall of Fame, MN Hall of Fame - Pitcher, and MN Hall of Fame – Promoter, but we would like to change the guidelines to extend it so we have more time to acquire these candidates. We do have some suggestions for several of the Awards, but we could use more if you have any candidates that you think should be honored. The forms are located on the Minnesota website (Minnesota Gopher State Horseshoe Pitchers Association - MGSHPA, under Links/Forms, and the requirements are available online under the MGSHPA Constitution and Bylaws). The Edi Holland Sportsmanship Award “form” will be created soon and put on the website but we need to finalize the requirements – which were not in the Guidelines previously. The candidate for this award should be a good sport on and off the courts, be a positive influence to those around them, and someone who promotes the sport of horseshoes. The deadlines for these nominations will be modified slightly so we have more time to acquire candidates and you will be informed when that happens. Thank you!

Minnesota Club/League Tournament
By Carolyn Brigner
On Saturday, June 21, a new style team tournament was held in Genola. The club/league tournament was hosted by the Morrison County League. The round robin format pitted clubs against each other to determine a team champion. Six clubs brought pitchers that were classified based on their NHPA averages. Each round of the handicapped event saw the A pitchers competing with other A’s, B’s with B’s and C’s with C’s.
It was a tight leaderboard until the final game. Alexandria # 1 came into the day as the top rated team. They proved they deserved this ranking when they won all three games against a second seeded Morrison County team. Gary Boots, Al Larson, and Jerry Werk took down Pat Stumpf, Minnie Fischer, and Tim Brigner to take first place honors knocking their opponents down to 4th place.
Harvey Burkman, Josh Olson, and Lance Van Wyhe from Bertha also won all three games to take second place over their opponents from the Santiago team of Russ Girtz, Jerry Rajkowski, and Brian Wipper.
Third place went to Janet Larson, Barry Schilling, and Randy Werk who formed a second team from Alexandria. Their 3-0 victory over the Roger Lodermeier, Annette Grebinoski, and Kathy Stueve from Ringers of Rice clinched third place.
Despite the sweltering day, everyone seemed to have a great time and hope to see this tournament grow in the future.

Minnesota Team Tournament Revived
By Josh Olson
Talk about a hot weekend for pitching horseshoes! Thank goodness we had a roof over our heads; I am not sure if any of us would have played 6 games if we had to play under the sun. I first want to thank Tim and Carolyn for taking the time to get the building/courts ready, the courts were in great shape. I also want to thank Carrie Kowalczyk and her son Brady for making the concessions! Thank you to Carolyn, Cody and my dad Paul for keeping the score. Also, to my mom Sharyl for doing the stats after each game and keeping track of the wins, it made the tournament go by so much faster with all the extra help!
We only had 4 teams for the rebirth of the MN Team Tournament. It has probably been about 7-8 years since we last had the tournament back in West St Paul. I figured everyone has so much fun in Beloit for Team World I would bring it back to MN. Unfortunately, we only had 4 teams this year, but we all had a lot of fun-none-the-less. We played a double round, so each team played each other 2 times. The format was almost the exact same as Team World, except we capped the Team average to 200%. Team #2 of Al and Janet Larson, Tim Brigner and Barry Schilling pulled out the victory by winning 1 more game than Team #3 of Harvey Burkman, Josh Olson, Lance Van Wyhe and newcomer to sanctioned horseshoes Mickey Burkman (Harvey’s younger brother). Team #2 had 15 wins, and Team #3 had 14 wins. Team #1 of Gary Boots, Pat Stumpf, Jerry Werk and Bruce Swenson finished 3rd with 12 wins, and Team #4 of Mike and Marlys Timm and Denise Kleven and Scott Chalmers finished 4th. I am hopeful for a better turnout and maybe a little cooler weather next year. If anyone has some suggestions on how to maybe generate more interest, I am always open to suggestions.

2025 Upsala Winter League Recap
By Janet Larson
I am a little late with this, but better late than not at all. On Monday afternoons, from January through March, sixteen pitchers gathered in Upsala for horseshoes. Myron VanderWeyst was our court coordinator, along with some help from his wife Linda. We didn’t miss a single week, with some driving as far as 85 miles each way, each week, braving a few extremely cold days, but thankfully not a lot of snow. We used a singles, handicap, count-all format, pitching four 40 shoe games each week for eleven weeks. Gary Boots finished as our League Champion with a win/loss record of 27.5-14.5, beating out Pat Stumpf by just .5 wins. Pat had a High Point Average of 78/game. Don Claseman was awarded High Points Over Average and Janet Larson had High Ringer % Over Average along with the Sportsmanship award. Carolyn Brigner and Ginger O’Brien used this league to initiate into the newly formed Elder Women’s division. Carolyn was given the Rookie award and Ginger got Most Improved. On week 12 we divided into four classes and then the class winners did a playoff round robin. Carolyn won Class D, Jerry Zyvoloski took Class C, Annette Grebinoski hung on for the win in Class B and Pat was undefeated in Class A. In the final playoff round Pat remained undefeated to earn the Tournament Champion title and claim that patch. Thank you to Myron and Linda for helping all of us keep up with our pitching skills throughout the cold Minnesota winters.

Bertha Open Recap
By Josh Olson
As I am writing this tournament recap, we have just had the MN Club and MN Team Tournament this past weekend in Genola, and I will say I am glad that the Bertha Open had almost “perfect” weather for pitching indoors. The weather for the Bertha Open couldn’t have been warmer than 65 degrees the entire day, was ideal for pitching if you ask me, just enough to break a sweat, lol.
I want to start with the class winners for the Morning shift. Class D and C. Class D had a 4 way tie for 3rd place, tie breaker was H2H, with Joy Brabec edging out Mick Ziemann, Todd Betterman and Carolyn Brigner. Joy would take 3rd place with a 3-3 record, Lu Cave and Dave Streit would tie for 1st place, but Dave would catch Lu on her first game of the Tournament and would take 1st place for Class D. Congrats to Joy, Lu and Dave. Both Dave and Joy are Bertha Horseshoe club members and pitched well that day. Class C winners, 3rd place had another tie in this group, Brian Wipper and Al Woida another Bertha club member would tie for 3rd, Al would get the upper hand with the H2H tie breaker, Steve Ziegler from Alexandria would have a good day of pitching, he would tie with another Bertha club member, Larry Brabec for 1st place, but Larry would sneak past Steve earlier in the day with the H2H tie breaker going to Larry.
Class B and A would start the afternoon shift early, which is always great when it comes to running a horseshoe tournament, if you can start early that means you can finish early, and everyone can get home just a little sooner! Class B would be dominated by Jerry Werk, Jerry had a great day, he didn’t have a game under his entry average and pitched a solid 60% for the day. Tim Brigner would get his only loss of the day from Jerry on the last game, and taking 3rd place would be Lance Van Wyhe, who ended up tying with Jerry and giving Jerry’s only .5 a loss. Lance is also a Bertha Club member, congrats to Lance, Tim and Jerry! Class A would only have 6 players this year, originally, we were going to pitch 40 shoes or 40 points which ever comes first since the original schedule had 7 but after a dropout, we went to 6 players, so I decided to play games to 40 points. Going into the last game we didn’t have a clear winner of the class, with the final game to finish between Gary Boots and Don Pederson from North Dakota hanging in the balance, if Gary won, he would cause a 4-way playoff between Janet, Josh, Al Larson and Don. Well Don prevailed and would take the Honors of winning Class A, Don averaged just over 60% for the day, Al, Janet and I would tie for 2nd place, with Janet getting edge out of the money. I would sneak out 3rd place, Al would take 2nd place by about .5% over Josh overall in ringer%, and Don would take 1st place home to Grand Forks.
Thank you to Lu Cave, Tim and Carolyn Brigner for sticking around to keep score, Cathy Ziemann for keeping score in the morning shift while she was cheering on her brother Mick, Cody for taking Class A by the horns and doing all 3 games at 1 time, and for helping in the morning shift as well. We had a great host as Myron said when you would walk in the Door as my dad would greet almost everyone at the door, and my mom would welcome you into the concessions area and fix you up a hot dog or a delicious burger with some chips! I say it time and time again, but I wouldn’t be able to do the Tournaments like I do without the help and support behind the scenes with my Family, we are a GREAT Team!

Alex League 2025 Spring Update
By Janet Larson
We had 20 pitchers participate in our four weeks of May singles "Try Horseshoes”, four of those were members of the non-sanctioned Alexandria Eagles Club, two of which had never participated in sanctioned events. Our members also recruited two guys to “Try Horseshoes” that were new to the game. Before summer league started we added one more guy that was new to the game. We ended up adding four new pitchers to our regular season of walking doubles, and welcomed back Chuck Betterman who was off last year due to health reasons, giving us 18 members. We use a high/low pairing to make teams, which keeps it very competitive.
Four of our members participated in Team World in Beloit WI. Alan Larson and Gary Boots were on Team #1, while Jerry Werk and Janet Larson were on Team #3. These same four will be going to the World Tournament later this month. Good luck to all of the MN pitchers attending this event, we hope you get lots of ringers and bring home some hardware.
Our Alex Open Tournament was held on May 24th with a full schedule of 32 pitchers, including 5 of our ND neighbors. This year the weather was as close to perfect as possible. All of the classes were handicapped and the tiebreaker was over/under average. This format seemed to favor the pitchers that were pitching at or above their entering averages, which I think makes it more competitive and more fair for everyone.
If you are thinking of going to the WT in Wisconsin next year, remember that you need four events to qualify. We encourage you to check out the Donnelly Thresherman’s tournament on August 23rd-24th, the weekend before MN State, which is run by Jerry Werk.

Bud Nelson Recap
By Helen Hawkinson
What a picture beautiful start to the weekend, nice sunny warm morning. Pitchers started practicing, Joe, Patti and I started setting up the equipment…. best layed plans … then printer wouldn’t work, the monitor for the computer screen was glitching, so I ended up running home and getting my computer equipment. Well after we got everyone started – we gave up and Tom and Jeff saved the day by going “old school”. We used poster board and black and red markers to score manually. Class D & E were troopers – Thank you! Class E – 3rd place winner was Molly Dehkes with 5 wins 2 losses, doubling her entry average of 4.0% to 8.21%, 2nd place winner was Ringer Rob Houfer with 6 wins 1 loss, bringing his 11.17% entry average up to 18.21%, and 1st place winner, young Dominik Littel – with 6 wins and 1 loss almost doubling his entry average of 13% ending with 24.64%! (pictured below) Class D – 3rd place winner with 4 wins 3 losses Tammy Liljedahl ending with 11.79%, 2nd place winner with 6 wins and 1 loss – Taylor Hughes ending with 32.5%, and 1st place winner with 7 wins and 0 losses ending with a 28.57% average - Eugene Palma. Way to go.
Second session started when Sara Nelson worked her magic with the printer and we had score cards! Class C – 3rd Place winner was Denny Keogh ending at 19.58%, 2nd Place winner was Deborah Thomsen ending at 22.92%, and 1st Place was Beau Dehkes from Pine City ending at 34.58%. Class B – 3rd Place was Brian Wipper ending at 30.36%, 2nd Place Tristan Dehkes ending at 47.86%, and 1st place Melisa Dehkes ending at 47.86% (had a 70.0% high game!). Class A – 3rd Place winner was Tom Prokop ending at 50.36%, 2nd Place winner was Helen Hawkinson ending at 57.14%, and 1st Place winner was Jeff Washburn ending at 60%. Congratulations. Shout out to Colin Wanous who had a high game of 80%! (I have so much appreciation for Josh and Russ for running computers at tournaments.)

Rick Mike Memorial Tournament
By Helen Hawkinson
First I want to say thank you for coming to the Rick Mike Memorial Tournament. It means a lot to me to have my horseshoe family support me – and although Rick’s true passion was golf – he played horseshoes with me on Thursdays because I love the sport so much. Sunday started off better, score cards and sunshine. What more can you ask for – well – final scorecards would be nice but we will gloss over that for now. Thank you April Lynch for entering the scores so I could pitch. Class C winners: 3rd Place winner was Robert Houfer with high game of 20%, 2nd Place winner was Terry Clementson with high game of 27.5%, and 1st Place winner was Taylor Hughes with high game of 40%. Class B – 3rd Place winner was Tristan Dehkes with high game of 60%, 2nd Place winner Les Erickson 47.5%, and 1st Place Melissa Dehkes with a high game of 60%. Class A – 3rd Place Winner was Tom Prokop with a high game of 57.5%, 2nd Place Winner was Jeff Washburn with high game of 72.5%, and 1st Place Class Champion was me – Helen Hawkinson pitching one of the best games of my life – an 82.5% game. It was a day of high over averages! Thank you again, everyone.
