Coffee on the Quarter

On July 18, our inaugural Coffee on the Quarter launched with a small gathering of supporters, volunteers, and staff in our Oakland office. In recognition that July is Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, our Mental Health and Violence Prevention team members gave an overview of their work with families in crisis, young people, teachers, and administrators who work with youth in our community. Services may include individual and group meetings with young people who have had some involvement with the juvenile justice or child protection systems.

"We are planting seeds with young people, showing them that we see what they are going through and teaching healthier ways to deal with the struggle," said Nicole Thomas, Director of Mental Health Services.

"It's important that we build fiscal relationships with people who understand our mission" added Aswad Aarif, Restorative Practices Training Manager. "Our work is largely preventative, but in terms of numbers, you can't count the fights that don't happen."

Last year, 135 families and youth received 1,994 hours of therapy, coaching, and clinical services, thanks to the Catholic Charities Mental Health and Violence Prevention team members.

Coffee on the Quarter is a quarterly gathering that brings supporters together with Catholic Charities team members to learn more about our programs, services, and impact. The next session will be held on September 19 and will focus on Disaster Emergency Services. If you are interested in participating in Catholic Charities events, please email development@cceb.org.

90 Years Ago in August 1934

On August 17, 1934, the Oakland Tribune published the story, Catholics To Combine Charity Work, announcing that 36 Catholic “welfare organizations” of Alameda County would be unified under a central bureau to be named the Affiliated Catholic Charities of Alameda County.

The call to unify came from The Most Reverend John J. Mitty, Archbishop of the Diocese of San Francisco, who declared, “All welfare work is based on the tenet, “Love One Another.” He went on the say, “In employing the scientific method instead of hit and miss methods, the Central Bureau will provide assurance that there will be no break in our battle against poverty, suffering and privation.”

The Rev. Joseph Mulkern was charged with overseeing the consolidation. In 1935, the Affiliated Catholic Charities began operations, and since that time, there has been no break in our battle, thanks to our many supporters, partners, team members, and volunteers.

Bikes for Kids

This summer, 16 happy kids experienced a "Christmas in July" with the gift of new bikes! Our thanks go to Kids Bike Lane for adding a special summer bike-build to their schedule. The bikes, all built by volunteers, are donated to local charities to go directly to children in need.

We love the many ways our friends, supporters, partners, and volunteers help our team members meet the needs of families and children.
