Dr. Adegboyega Granted Advanced Ankle Privileges in New York State
Becomes Third NYCPM Faculty Out of Only 34 in State to Hold AAP

On July 7, Samuel Adegboyega, DPM, Professor and Chair of the Department of Medicine at NYCPM, announced that he had been granted Advanced Ankle Privilege in New York State, from The University of the State of New York Education Department’s Office of the Professions. He becomes one of only 34 podiatrists in the state with that privilege; three of those 34 are faculty at NYCPM – Dr. Johanna Godoy, Dr. Thomas Vitale, and now Dr. Samuel Adegboyega.

White Coat Ceremony Celebrates Class of 2026
August 17th’s White Coat Ceremony celebrated the first-year Class of 2026 and represented the return of the single-class ceremony for NYCPM, the norm in pre-pandemic years. (Last year’s White Coat Ceremony was a double; it celebrated both the classes of 2025 and 2024 because of the previous year’s pandemic-caused event cancellation.)

2022 Residency Fair Delivers Information and
Success Stories
On Friday July 22nd, NYCPM hosted a live Residency Fair, organized by Student Services: the first time in three years that the Fair was able to go live. Representatives from dozens of residency programs set up exhibits and literature that displayed their offerings. Tables filled the Bruce Frankel conference room, classrooms, and lined hallways; 2023 students crowded around them, eager for information. Welcome Dr. Bernstein to the Medicine Department …
Matthew Scott Bernstein, DPM, joined the Department of Medicine in July as Clinical Instructor, teaching Podiatric Medicine and Friday workshop to third-year students. Dr. Bernstein received his BS in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from the University of Miami and obtained his doctorate in podiatric medicine from Barry University of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery, graduating at the top of his class. … And Welcome New Learning Specialist Dr. Brendan Caputo
Brendan Caputo, Ed.D., NYCPM’s new Learning Specialist, arrived in August. After earning a master’s degree in educational leadership from Hofstra University, he received his doctorate in education from Molloy University; his dissertation was a qualitative, phenomenological study on college student academic procrastination. With extensive experience in student campus life and student services, Dr. Caputo most recently served Molloy University as Student Solution Counsellor. Academic Dean Michael J. Trepal, DPM, said “You will find him to be outgoing, very approachable and dedicated to helping students succeed.” Find him on the fourth floor!

NYCPM Alumni Dominate ‘Residency Rumble’ at Summit
The 20th PRESENT Podiatric Residency Education Summit East took place in person in mid-August, after two years as a virtual event. The summit featured lectures and workshops, and culminated in an academic game show, the Residency Rumble, with questions contributed by the ABPM and sponsored by Ortho Dermatologics. NYCPM graduates captured four of the five prizes!

NYCPM Graduate Named Nassau County Health Commissioner
Irina Gelman, DPM (2010), currently the Orange County (NY) Health Commissioner, will become the Nassau County Health Commissioner in September. Dr. Gelman has served Orange County for four years and led that county through the Covid pandemic. Previously she was public health director in Fulton County upstate, and before that worked as a podiatrist. Nassau County is more than triple the size of Orange County, which itself is seven times larger than Fulton County. Source: PM News

Karen Langone, DPM (1986) was elected President of the Executive Board at the recent annual meeting of the American Association for Women Podiatrists (AAWP), held at the APMA Annual Scientific Conference, in Orlando, FL.

APMWA Announces 37th Annual Student Writing Competition
The American Podiatric Medical Writers Association (APMWA) has announced its 37th Annual Student Writing Competition.
· All papers MUST be non-technical in nature. Appropriate subjects include practice management, ethics, law, education, healthcare, or any topic that would be suitable for a lay publication.
· There is no word limit. Papers will be graded for content, style, grammar, neatness, and overall impact.
· Entries must be received by 4/1/23 via e-mail at bblock@podiatrym.com
· First prize is one thousand dollars ($1,000), second prize is seven hundred and fifty dollars ($750), third prize is five hundred dollars ($500). Prizes are sponsored by an APMA Educational Foundation endowment from Dr. and Mrs. Steven Berlin, and winners receive recognition in the APMA NEWS and the APMWA Newsletter. Honorable Mention certificates may also be awarded.
· This competition is open to any enrolled podiatric student.
· Entries become the property of APMWA, which may arrange publication of the entry.
