On June 24, 2019, 64 Native youth representing 14 federally-recognized tribes gathered at Portland State University’s Native American Student and Community Center (NASCC) in Portland, Oregon for the week-long 9th Annual
THRIVE
Youth Conference
.
The conference was made up of five interactive workshop tracks that brought Native youth together to build protective factors and learn about healthy outlets for healing and cultural pride. Native youth expressed their hearts by sharing their story, through writing lyrics, creating digital images, imagining themselves in a white coat, reconnecting with Mother Earth, and reconnecting with their creation stories. Tracks included creative designing with OXDX (leadership), Beats Lyrics Leaders (songwriting & production), Storytelling in Graphic Novels (culture as prevention), Traditional Foods (culture & nutrition), and Science and Medical track with Oregon Health and Science University.
