Escape the Heat on the Water
We have made good progress since our last newsletter, and much of it is thanks to the great support we have and our outstanding crew.
Last month, led by director of Vessel Operations, Michael Rogers, Matthew Turner aced our annual Coast Guard inspection and is cleared for another year of sailing. While routine, passing this inspection is not easy. The ship has to be in top condition, and the crew has to demonstrate that they are prepared for emergencies, such as a fire, or a person overboard, and show everyday sailing expertise. It takes good preparation and meticulous attention to detail to pass with no deficiencies, which we did. Well done, Matthew Turner crew!

New faces
Also last month, we added two professionals to the leadership team, our new Education Manager and Director of Advancement.
| |
Sam Martinez is our new Education Manager.
A graduate of UC Davis, where she was President of the Marine Science Club, she has earned a Bachelor of Science in Marine & Coastal Science with a Minor in Education. Currently finishing a Marine Science Conservation Education Fellowship at the Marine Mammal Center, Sam will be focusing on improving the quality of our educational effort, adding rigor for older students, and improving evaluations in all of our education programs to strengthen our overall impact measurement and reporting.

Elizabeth (Lizzie) Hunt, our new Advancement Director, comes to us after five years with TechSoup, where she was most recently Senior Director, Research, Communications, and Community. She brings experience in marketing, communications, fundraising and corporate partnerships for nonprofits and foundations including Internews, One Global Economy, and the US Agency for International Development. Lizzie and I are working on planning our 40th anniversary celebration, Gala40, and to develop a robust advancement program for Call of the Sea, with the goal of achieving sustainability in 2024 and creating a substantial endowment.

New program
We launched a great new program, Tall Ship Skills Workshop last month, and the first cohort reported that it is a great experience. They learned the skills required to crew on a traditionally rigged ship. Participants climb aloft, learn how to safely handle the lines used to control the sails, practice the most essential knots, join the professional crew to sail the ship and practice safety maneuvers such as Man Overboard. In addition, navigation and voyage planning are covered and essential communication and teamwork skills are practiced in the course. Three days of activities include a mix of short dockside training sessions and long sails on San Francisco Bay. The next Tall Ships Sailing Skills workshops set sail on July 17 and July 31. There are still a few open positions.

And while it’s not a new program, it’s a great program! I’m talking about the Call of the Sea Summer Camps. Kids 8-13 are having a great time, learning a lot about ships and sailing, marine animals, and SF Bay ecology. We have several more sessions this summer, and there are still a few places open for kids who are eager to get on the water. Camp activities take place on the dock and under sail. | Get more info, and sign up your budding sailors here:

Celebrating 40 years
of Innovation and Education under Sail
| |
That date is October 25, and the occasion is Gala40, Call of the Sea’s 40th anniversary celebration. We’ll be enjoying great food and drink, delightful entertainment, and some entertaining anecdotes from students, sailors, and Call of the Sea’s volunteers, and celebrating both our first 40 years of innovation and education under sail, and the next 40 years.
Gala40 will be held at the beautiful Corinthian Yacht Club in Tiburon. Watch your email for more details. We expect this event to sell out, so be sure to get your tickets right away!

Will you be our sponsor?
We are looking for members of the community to join us in sponsoring Gala40. By helping to present this great event, you or your company can stand out as a champion of innovative experiential environmental education for all kids. Please contact Lizzie Hunt at Advancement@callofthesea.org, or Ben Delaney at Ben@callofthesea.org to talk about the best sponsorship package for you.
