Messaging for St. Michael's

How does one describe who St. Michael's is as a community? What are the words you use, the tone, the expressions you share with someone who has yet to discover our beloved community? These questions, and many, many more, are the ones your communications taskforce has spent hours pondering the last several months. The truth is, I don't think there's an easy or singular answer to that question. Acknowledging the reality that St. Michael's is many things to many different people, we want to do our best to capture the essence of our identity.

On the remaining Sundays in the month of July, we're going to ask anyone who is willing to help us with a project that involves poster board and cameras. In the parish hall, you will find the writing prompt, "I was looking for.... At St. Michael's I found..." On one side of the poster board, we invite you to think back to your earliest days at St. Michael's to complete the first sentence. What do you remember looking for in a faith community? On the other side of the same piece of poster board, we invite you to complete the second sentence, sharing what you actually found at St. Michael's. Our hope is to capture change of some sort.

Just to get the creativity flowing, here are some examples:
  • I was looking for comfort. At St. Michael's I found sermons that challenge me in ways I never knew I needed.
  • I was looking for beautiful music. At St. Michael's I learned to make a joyful noise unto the Lord!
  • I was looking for forgiveness. At St. Michael's I found grace in a loving community.
  • [From a youth] I was looking to sleep in on Sundays! At St. Michael's I found a group of friends whom I love!
Our hope is to capture as many parishioners as possible flipping their poster board in front of a video camera in the memorial garden. None of our messages would be complete in and of themselves, but together, they will say a great deal about our community!
If that doesn't sound like something in which you'd like to participate, I do hope you will at least stop by the memorial garden so we can take a high quality photograph of you. Your contributions will help to tell our digital story!

"God Will Wipe Away Every Tear": A Faithful Response to Grief and Hope
A three part series on grief, hope, and everything in between. Grief and loss are universal human experiences. Join us for a discussion on how we move through those experiences, individually and collectively. With these gatherings we hope to begin sharing our personal stories, create a culture of communal care, and ground ourselves in the narrative our faith.
On Jul. 15, 22, and 29, we will meet in the Parish hall from 5-7 PM. A simple supper will be provided, followed by a short presentation, time for small group discussion, and Compline.
  • July 15: Why do we sing Alleluia at funerals? A deep dive on our theology of death and resurrection
  • July 22: Personal experiences of grief: a panel discussion with St. Michael's parishioners
  • July 29: Grieving in Community
Please email Beth with questions or for more information.
