TWO-PRONGED UNICORNS

Return to the Land of Giants

The unicorn continues to hold a place in popular culture, as a symbol of fantasy and as an extremely wild woodland creature; a symbol of purity and grace whose horn has the power to render poisoned water potable and to heal sickness. Now, from a place unknown, a family of two-pronged unicorns graces the greenery of Oracle Park, occasionally observed on days off or in the early A.M. hours. A true only-in-San Francisco phenomenon, they are here to infuse the Giants with the power and ferocity of the wild.

When readers and others have questioned the existence of two-pronged unicorns my standard reply is, "So you do believe in unicorns: thank you,
and drive safely."

The Giants are ready. The magic of our two-pronged friends has slowly begun to penetrate and awaken the inner powers of the Team.

Photo of the Week
July 2, 1963 -- In one of baseball's most memorable pitching duels, San Francisco Giants' right-hander Juan Marichal and the Milwaukee Braves' southpaw Warren Spahn both hurl 15 scoreless innings before Willie Mays ends the marathon contest with a homer off Spahn in the bottom of the 16th, giving San Francisco a 1-0 victory.
Above, Marichal embraces Mays.

What’s remarkable is that there were six Hall of Famers in the game. For the Giants: Mays, McCovey and Marichal. For the Braves:
Aaron, Matthews, and Spahn.

Giants manager Alvin Dark tried to take Marichal out for the
first time in the ninth. The conversation did not go well.
Marichal refused to go, pointing to the Braves dugout at his 42-year-old counterpart and told his manager, “I am not going to come out of the game as long as that old man is still pitching.”

Kyrie to Dallas?
Recent reports on the Dallas Mavericks indicates they may have interest in Kyrie. Please, yes! That's like when you learn someone sent a suitcase of termite eggs to your rotten landlord's house.

Thank you, Brooklyn Nets! A flat-earther/anti-vaxxer goes to Dallas. Did I mention what a reliable team-builder he is?

Ghost Runner or Zombie Runner?

No. A perfect game is one where no runner reaches base by a hit, base on balls, or error. The pitcher didn’t allow the zombie runner (I prefer that to “ghost runner” because he’s actually there) on base, he was put there to start the inning by rule so he doesn’t end the perfect game.

Wimbledon Highlight
"I'm Dr. Frasier Crane, and I'm watching -- and it's hysterical!""

Last year, Bathroom Break record-setter, Stefano Tsitsipas, (over eight minutes), infuriated Andy Murray. Murray tweeted the next day: "Fact of the day. It takes Stefanos Tsitsipas twice as long to go to the bathroom as it takes Jeff Bezos to fly into space. Interesting."

At Wimbledon on Saturday, Tsitsipas got Out-Babied by a new figure in emotional tennis, Nick Kyrigios of Australia. and called Kyrgios an ‘evil bully’ after on-court dustups.

"It's constant bullying, that's what he does. He bullies the opponents," the Greek star said. "He was probably a bully at school himself." This after Tsitsipas swatted a ball full speed that almost hit a spectator. It was two of John McEnroes on one court.

Kyrgios laughed off Tsitsipas' claims before sarcastically saying he'd be upset as well if he'd lost to the same opponent four times in as many matches. Kyrgios is now 4-0 in four career meetings with Tsitsipas at tour level.

Viewpoint: A public letter to
A's owner John Fisher

By Andy Dolich
Three things that can’t be hidden for long — the sun, the moon and the truth.

Oakland A’s owner John Fisher is doing a magical job hiding his endgame when it comes to the “parallel path” of building a “Rooted in Oakland” ballpark at Howard Terminal or relocating the franchise to
Las Vegas.

The A’s organization has been searching for the perfect ballpark location for years. Fans have seen a portfolio full of artists’ renderings for proposed diamonds at Cisco Field in Fremont, Diridon Station in San Jose, Victory Court, Peralta College sites in Oakland and now the Howard Terminal ballpark city project, shown in the galley above.

Recent All-Star quality players have left the A’s starting lineup, including Matt Chapman, Matt Olson, Chris Bassitt, Sean Manaea, Marcus Semien and manager Bob Melvin. The team cites lack of ballpark revenue as the major reason for player movement.

Coliseum attendance is lagging well below MLB averages. The ongoing Groundhog Day of the ballpark search has been an attendance gut punch for loyal A’s fans. Through the first 28 home games this season the team is averaging 7,500 fans per game. The season ticket base, once as high as 16,000 (1989), is now under 2,000.

In May 2021, Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred gave the A’s a green light to explore relocation options. But why leave the sixth largest market in America for Las Vegas, the 41st? How do you rationalize abandoning one of the country’s most diverse cities when baseball is struggling to stay relevant to many?

In his 17 years as owner of the Oakland A’s John Fisher has never spoken publicly about his reasons for owning the team. The recent vote by the Bay Conservation and Development Commission to remove the 56-acre Howard Terminal site as a priority for the Port of Oakland was a positive for their plans.

No matter where the A’s decide to play ball, it could be a minimum of four years to build a new ballpark. Where will they play in the interim with what level of quality players?

Fisher, Manfred and Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf have lost their way with the heart and soul of what this storied franchise means to Oakland and the Bay Area. They have been spectators as San Francisco, Santa Clara and Sacramento have built new stadiums and arenas.

John Fisher has verbally committed to 100% privately financing the ballpark project. That will require multiple billions of dollars. When, how and by who will that money be put on the table.

Mr. Fisher, it is time for you to step out of the shadows and restore the pride to a storied franchise that has won four World Series, participated in 14 playoffs, sent four players and a manager to Cooperstown and thrilled 77 million fans who have been, are and will always be “Rooted in Oakland.”

Can you guarantee that Oakland doesn’t lose the last of its three professional sports franchises?

'At a loss for words':
Blackburn earns 1st All-Star selection

OAKLAND -- Paul Blackburn had a suspicious feeling when he walked inside the A’s clubhouse Sunday morning and noticed an unusual meeting listed on the daily schedule that was mandatory
for all players.

"It was listed as a travel meeting,” Blackburn said. “I can’t tell you we’ve had any travel meetings this year.”

Turns out, Blackburn was right to have a premonition. This was no meeting to discuss the A’s upcoming road trip to Texas. It was a gathering by manager Mark Kotsay to officially announce Blackburn’s selection to the American League All-Star roster. The 28-year-old righty earned his first career All-Star nod in the midst of what has been a breakout campaign.

Autograph Collection of Rich Yee
I had many opportunities to work closely with San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey over the years. He was the spokesperson and endorser for Body Armour sports drink and I was the photographer
for Body Armour.

I photographed his promo photos for BA, public appearances, youth baseball camps, golf tournaments, private events and covered his home games with the Giants. Over the years I was fortunate enough to collect several autographed baseballs, photos and jerseys in black, tan, orange and gold WS edition. He was always happy to sign autographs and answer questions for me.

As a sports photographer, I truly miss seeing him on the field.

Next week is the All-Star Game.

Since the first MLB All-Star Game in 1933,
136 batters have hit 178 home runs off 131 different pitchers. Vida Blue and Catfish Hunter have allowed four home runs each, more than any other pitchers
in All-Star history.

A two part question:
(1) What MLB player holds the record for most home runs as an All-Star with six?
(2) What two great Red Sox players are tied for second with four home runs apiece?

Two hints: None of the three won an All-Star home run derby and a National Leaguer holds the record of six home runs.

Stanford Cardinal
Women's Swimming and Diving: Year in Review
Cardinal boasts another successful season

Back to the Podium
Stanford returned to the podium with a third-place finish at the 2022 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships – the ninth top three finish for the program since 2008, and the first since the Cardinal won the national title in 2019.

With 399.5 points at the national championship, Stanford improved upon its ninth place finish in 2021 and remains the only program in the country to have never finished outside of the top 10. Stanford finished behind Texas and Virginia at the national championships.

National Titles
The Cardinal claimed three national titles this past season, with Taylor Ruck winning the 200 free – her first career individual national title – and freshman Regan Smith winning the title in the 200 back. Both Ruck and Smith were joined by Torri Huske and Brooke Forde to open the action in Atlanta with a national championship in the 800 free relay.

The relay title was the fourth in the last five championships for the Cardinal, with Forde being a member of three of those relay teams.

All-America Dozen
A dozen swimmers and divers earned All-America honors from the CSCAA for Stanford on the season, totaling 42 honors for finish in the top 16 in their respective events.

Stanford was led by Torri HuskeTaylor Ruck and Regan Smith – who all earned seven All-America honors.

A Perfect Pac-12 Season
The Cardinal went a perfect 6-0 in Pac-12 dual meets, and 7-0 on the season. The closest dual of the season was a 44 point victory at No. 8 California to close out the regular season.

Stanford's Pac-12 dual success continued at the conference championships where the Cardinal won its fifth conference title since 2017. Stanford won all five relay titles and seven individual titles to close out the conference meet with 1,671.5 points – 271 points ahead of California. The point total is the sixth-highest point total for the program in a season where Stanford won the conference.

Winning individual titles were: Anya Goeders (50 free, tie), Torri Huske (100 free, 100 fly, 200 IM), Brooke Forde (500 free, 400 IM), Regan Smith (100 back, 200 fly), Carolina Sculti (3m).

Huske was named the Pac-12 Most Outstanding Performer at the conference meet, while Regan Smith was honored as both the Pac-12 Women's Swimmer of the Year and Women's Freshman Swimmer of the Year. Greg Meehan was named the coach of the year for the fifth time in his career.

Forde Named Tom Hansen Medalist
After winning two conference titles and one national title – with four All-America honors to add – Brooke Forde was chosen as Stanford's 2021-22 Pac-12 Tom Hansen Conference Medal recipient on the women's side.

A Conference Medal is awarded annually to each member institution's outstanding senior male and female student-athlete based on the exhibition of the greatest combination of performance and achievement in scholarship, athletics and leadership.

Academic Success
In addition to Stanford's athletic success this season, the Cardinal also out-paced its peers in the classroom. 14 student-athletes were named to the Pac-12's Winter Academic Honor Roll, while Stanford led the all Division I women's programs with 17 first-team selections to the CSCAA Individual Scholar All-America team and posted the highest GPA in the nation.

Forde was also named a CoSIDA Academic All-American for the third straight season.

Ducas Debuts with Australia at
FIBA World Cup Qualifiers

MELBOURNE, Australia — The first round of FIBA World Cup qualifying has concluded, with the Australia Boomers punching their ticket to the second round. In their final qualifying game on July 3, Saint Mary's guard Alex Ducas made his debut for the Boomers as they took down China 71-48 to keep an unblemished qualifying record intact.

Ducas enjoyed the best season of his collegiate career at Saint Mary's during the 2021-22 season, where he started all 34 games for the Gaels. He set career-bests in points per game (10.3) and minutes per game (29.8) while leading Saint Mary's in three-pointers made. He took home West Coast Conference Player of the Week honors on January 24 after scoring 17 and 25 points in consecutive SMC wins, and capped of his season with All-WCC Second Team honors for the first time in his career.

All of his success on the court helped Saint Mary's reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2019. The Gaels were a No. 5 seed in the tournament, their best seed ever achieved in the tournament, and they won their sixth-ever NCAA Tournament game, beating Indiana 82-53. In the win over the Hoosiers, Ducas scored 13 points on 3-6 from beyond the arc, while adding four rebounds and two steals.

Ducas checked into the win over China late in the fourth quarter, with the Boomers having already taken command of the game. Jack McVeigh and Clint Steindl (former SMC Gael) had been injured earlier in the game, opening the door for Ducas to make his debut. The experience was even sweeter for Ducas, who used to be a floor mopper for the Boomers while growing up in Australia.

Australia used a 26-3 run in the fourth quarter to put away China and remain unbeaten in qualifying play, with previous wins over China and Japan in the previous week. The Boomers are 6-0 in qualifying play since February 25.

They will put that record to the test beginning on August 25 for their next round of qualifying games, when they take on Bahrain and Iran.

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES INTERIM HEAD COACH ALEX COVELO
On his thoughts of tonight’s match:
“I think we started the game pretty good here in Toronto. We knew we needed to press their midfield well in order to have opportunities and have possession the ball which is why we were able to score. In the second half, we started very nervous, and we stopped playing with the ball and were stretched out which allowed them to play. When you do not apply the right pressure to [Jonathan] Osorio and [Michael] Bradley, the guys can then play.”

On the younger players getting playing opportunities:
“I said that in the locker room today at the end that the subs were sending a message. It’s what I always tell the guys. In order to improve and be better every day, you have to train hard every day. This is not just the starters, these guys are pushing and working hard with lots of respect. Every time you give them an opportunity, they will try their best. [Jack] Skahan has been training well for a very long time. There is a moment where you have an opportunity to seize, and then you have other opportunities that are more difficult like what was mentioned about Jamiro Monteiro before. [Ousseni] Bouda did very well, came in, did well and we need to manage those situations. They are young.”

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES MIDFIELDER JACK SKAHAN
On the message he was told when entering the match in the second half:
“I think the message was to attack, to go after them, try to tie the game. I don’t think it was too complicated, it was just to get after them and try to score.”

On scoring his first MLS goal:
“I thought Jebo [Jeremy Ebobisse] was going to score [in a previous opportunity], he normally scores those. To be honest, I don’t exactly know what happened for the ball to bounce where it did, but it kind of just popped out to me. It popped out to me inside the box and if it landed in the box then I was going to shoot, and I shot and I’m happy it went in."

Oakland and Sacramento Play to Thrilling 3-3 Draw

The match was a back-and-forth battle between the two Northern California rivals. The hosts from Sacramento took the lead in the 11th minute through Rodrigo Lopez to make the game 1-0. Oakland answered back through a wonder goal, bicycle kick from Juan Azocar in the 27th minute as the game went to 1-1. Sacramento would head into the half with an advantage as Mallique Foster scored on the counter to restore the home side's advantage and make the score 2-1.

The second half got off to a flying start as Roots' leading goal scorer Óttar Magnús Karlsson snuck in his header at the far post to level the match in the 55th minute at 2-2. The man from Iceland would give Oakland the lead through a second header in the 70th minute giving him 13 on the season and Roots the 3-2 lead. Paul Blanchette was called on a number of times for Oakland late to maintain Oakland Roots advantage. Sacramento however would level it late in the game as the game ended 3-3.

Oakland now return home to Laney for a three game home stand starting with El Paso Locomotive FC on July 16th with kick off set for 7:00 p.m.

Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion Unveils Poster to Celebrate the Victories of the
24 Hours of Le Mans

MONTEREY, Calif, July 5, 2022 — Capturing a century of excellence in one painting is an impossible undertaking. Capturing three iconic overall winners to represent the evolution of the 24 Hours of Le Mans is also challenging yet has been masterfully accomplished by official artist Kelly Telfer to celebrate the centenary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans during the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, Aug. 17-20 at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.

The painting features three iconic cars that were overall winners at the French Classic and are the actual cars that will be displayed in the enormous Le Mans Legends Heritage Display, presented by Motul. The exhibition will showcase more than 50 overall and first-in-class winners, and special-interest cars that raced at the 24 Hours. Never has such a comprehensive display been curated in America.

Representing the pre-war era is the incredible 1929 Bentley Speed Six that is affectionately known as Old Number 1. The Bentley was driven by two of the original Bentley Boys, Woolf Barnato and Tim Birkin, to capture the overall win in 1929. But the Bentley wasn’t done. The same car returned in 1930 with Barnato and Glen Kidston behind the wheel to record the back-to-back win.

In 1956, Jaguar continued supremacy with its sleek 1955 Jaguar D-Type (XKD 501) driven by Ron Flockhart and Ninian Sanderson, who recorded a top speed of approximately 169 mph in testing at the Circuit de la Sarthe. The familiar blue and white Ecurie Ecosse livery provided Jaguar with its fourth overall victory.

For Americans, there is likely no other car that says “Yanks at Le Mans” than Shelby American’s red 1967 Ford GT40 Mk IV driven by Dan Gurney and A.J. Foyt. It was the first all-American team effort and ended six years of Ferrari dominance. Remarked Gurney, “The car turned out to be a really nice, smooth, fast car, without any bad habits.”

“What could be better than to illustrate the rich history of the 24 Hours of Le Mans and bring it to life for the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion,” Telfer says. “It’s my favorite racing event and experience of the year.”

Telfer will be present through the week for autograph sessions to make the commemorative poster even more special. The limited-edition poster will be available for purchase at the Official Raceway store beginning Aug. 13.

A third generation Californian, Telfer lives and works in Sonora, Calif. in the Sierra foothills. He has created apparel for many of the top race tracks, race teams and manufacturers through the years and has been the official artist of the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion for two years.

Earlier this year at The Amelia, Telfer’s painting “Mario Andretti - A True Champion” was auctioned at RM Sotheby’s with all proceeds going to Spina Bifida of Jacksonville. It was a memorable evening when the closing bid was announced that resulted in a $138,000 donation to the non-profit organization.

Kelly Telfer’s original art, fine art prints and more may be found at www.telferdesign.com. To contact Kelly Telfer, please email: [email protected]

Visitors to the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion can expect to see the world’s finest authentic and historic cars with period-correct livery in the paddock and on track. The four-day celebration, which begins on Wednesday, Aug. 17 and concludes on Saturday, Aug. 20, is preceded by two days of the Monterey Pre-Reunion, Aug. 13 and 14, where many of the same cars compete.

The Legends Club (formerly Flagroom) VIP experience package with delicious catering by local favorites Baja Cantina and Turn 12, tickets, camping and information on the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion are available at WeatherTechRaceway.com or by calling the tickets and accommodations specialists at 831-242-8200.

Hardly Trivial Answer by T. Buff
Stan Musial

Stanley Frank Musial, nicknamed "Stan the Man,"
hit six home runs as an All-Star.

Second place is not worthy of images. The 'Splendid Splinter,' Ted Williams and Fred Lynn of the Red Sox, tied for second with four each. (Sadly, Fred Lynn hit the last of his four with the California Angels.)

This link, https://bit.ly/3aoRWr1, will take you to the list of every home run hit in an All-Star Game.
Babe Ruth hit the first All-Star Game homer and
never again. If you look, you will see why!

This link, https://bit.ly/3bVeWOt, will take you to the history of the home run derby and a list of the winners of the popular event. (Geez, I just gave up a bunch of answers to what could have been good
trivia questions.)

The New York Yankees are the greatest dynasty, not only in baseball but in all of sports. The Yankees, in fact, embody a series of dynasties, from Ruth-Gehrig through Jeter-Rivera. But the absolute greatest Yankees were the 1949-1953 pinstripers, winners of an unprecedented five consecutive World Series. The Yankee Way, Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa writes in the book's forward, is “full of Yankee winning keys, star-studded competitions, and insights about one of baseball's historically fascinating periods.” Key contributors to this dynasty, including Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Billy Martin, Phil Rizzuto, and manager Casey Stengel, are remembered by their teammate, Charlie Silvera, catcher and co-author.

Dave Newhouse was an award-winning sportswriter/columnist for the Oakland Tribune before his retirement. He has continued his work as an author and The Yankee Way is his eighteenth book. He lives with his wife, Patsy, an artist, in Oakland, CA.

Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and
