Center at St. Matthew's Leadership Committee Holds Planning Retreat

The leadership committee for the Center at St. Matthew’s (Sacramento) met on Saturday for a day-long retreat, exploring possibilities for the future, discussing issues of importance, and enjoying a tour of the grounds that included a detailed history.
Here are some astounding numbers from this can-do Diocesan ministry center:
1,000 | number of families (average size four) fed each week through River City Food Bank (that’s 4,000 people per week!)
300 | number of adults every weekday learning ESL through Highlands Community Charter School (a program of Feather River Community College). That’s 1,500 immigrants and refugees being equipped each week for their new life in the United States.
Maintaining the campus that makes these loving wonders possible takes money. Will you join us in supporting this good work?

| The Cathedral Choir is off to England! | |
On Friday morning July 14, the Trinity Cathedral Choir will be on the way to England, for our week-long residency at Exeter Cathedral. This is the culmination of four years of planning (which included a cancelled trip in 2020). I am grateful to all of the members of our choir who have worked so hard to make this happen. The amount of music to learn for this residency has been daunting, and you can be proud of your choir as they represent our Cathedral and the Diocese of Northern California.
For complete information with details of music to be sung, check out the official online tour "program" here:
https://sierracanon.wordpress.com/2023/07/03/trinity-cathedral-choir-sacramento-california-england-choir-pilgrimage-2023/
The Sunday morning Eucharist on July 23rd will be live-streamed on the Exeter Cathedral YouTube channel, and can be viewed anytime on or after that date: https://youtube.com/@exetercathedral (click the heading which says “live” to view).

Missioner for Church Life
On July 4, we made our way to the University of Maryland in College Park for EYE23, the triennial gathering of Episcopal teens from all over the world. Our delegation, among the largest in attendance, consisted of 19 teens from across our diocese, and 4 chaperones.
The highlights of EYE23 include amazing worship each day, featuring the EYE band, “Charcuterie,” and rousing sermons given by the Rev. Nancy Frausto, director of Latinx Studies at Seminary of the Southwest, Julia Ayala Harris, President of the House of Deputies, and Presiding Bishop Michael Curry, who told us about his cat named “Muffin”!
Our teens also participated in workshops each day, with the topics ranging from gun violence, suicide, and climate change to church governance, building community, and what it means to be an Episcopal Christian. If you know one of our teens (or chaperones) who went to EYE23, give them a few days to get some rest, then be sure to ask them all about it!

Images and Reflections from EYE 23
EYE23 was truly eye opening. I met people I never would’ve met, worshiped in ways that I didn’t think were possible, and grew closer to God. I have developed a better understanding of the Episcopalian faith, all thanks to the mentors. Now I go forth to continue writing my story in the light of God.
– Dakota Borgfeldt
EYE23 taught me a lot about using my faith to practice positive change in my community. I attended many political and violence prevention workshops that directed me to how change is done in not only the church but also the world. I will take these lessons and utilize them for change, as well as teaching others.
– Ethan Bullard
EYE 23 was a great event that I’m glad I attended. The people were nice and welcoming, the events were good, and almost everyone was having a good time. And those you didn’t atleast had a fun time meeting new and hanging out with friend. It was a good event to be closer to God and to people who weren’t as close or as religious as others could still participate. The workshops that were offered were good as well, and they opened up many different conversations and viewpoints. I’m glad that I attended, and I hope that the lessons and new knowledge I learned continues with me and helps me through life.

Missioner for Disaster Resilience
The Heat is Coming – You Can Beat the Heat!
Over the weekend, most parts of our diocese are expecting temperatures at or above 100 degrees. Heat related injury and illness is a real danger, however, you can take simple steps to keep the heat from being a killer.
Check on family and friends who are older, infirm, or have access or functional needs
Check on animals and ensure they have shade and water
Stay hydrated
Wear loose fitting, light colored clothing, and a hat when outdoors
Wear sunscreen
Seek immediate medical attention if you or somebody near you exhibits any of the following:
| |
- Clammy skin
- Dizziness
- Headache
- Muscle cramps
- Extreme thirst
- Excessive sweating
- Dehydration
- Fainting
| | |
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Weakness
- Decreased urine output
- Hot, red, dry skin
- Racing heart or heavy breathing
- Change in mental state
| |
Extreme climates can create a disaster quickly. As always, ensure your emergency kit is ready and that you know the places you can go to obtain water and cool, indoor refuge if needed.
The bishop stands ready to help in case of disaster, but your help is needed to keep your diocese ready to respond. Please donate to the bishops disaster fund by clicking here, to help us support a rapid response in time of need.

St. John’s, Roseville, Will Host Sacred Ground Dialogue Circles Beginning August 2023
Sacred Ground is a film- and readings-based small group dialogue series on race and racism in America, grounded in faith and is part of Becoming Beloved Community, the Episcopal Church’s long-term commitment to racial healing, reconciliation, and justice in our personal lives, our ministries, and our society. To date, over 70 individuals have attended the four previous sets of circles offered at St. John’s.
This is an 11-session program, with small group discussion and reflection. Sessions will be held bi-weekly on Wednesday evenings from 7-9 pm beginning August 9, 2023, and will be offered via Zoom. There is no cost for attending the program, although participants are asked to purchase two books to help guide them in our discussions.
We encourage Sacred Ground graduates to register if they are interested in a “deeper dive” into the Sacred Ground curriculum materials. If there is enough interest and graduates, we will form a separate “deeper dive” dialogue circle.
For more information, or to indicate your interest in attending, please contact Diane Williamson at dianewilliamson864@gmail.com or (916) 300-6384.
Thank you!
