July 13 Greetings

Dear Ones,

It’s Tuesday, of the second week of July, and I am back from a lovely vacation! We had planned to go camping in Colorado, but because of the heat, we opted for four days at the lovely Wigwam Resort in Litchfield Park. I was at the pool every morning around 8am, and when it got too hot, spent time catching up on summer reading in our spacious air-conditioned room! You know that you have had a nice break when you lose track of what day it is!

I know that many of you are traveling right now, I pray that you return to us safe and refreshed as well. If you are visiting a new grandchild or are just getting out to experience the beauty of our amazing country, take some pictures to share with us and send them to [email protected]. We would love to see what you have been up to! Irene Clute sent us these great pictures from her trip to see her family and grandkids in the Chicago area. They took the kids to the Shedd Aquarium.

It was exciting to see the Emmanuel Lutheran Endowment Committee distribute the 2020 Endowment Grants on Sunday. Following the guidelines of our Endowment, over $2600 was given to four worthy recipients.

  • Gail Kenny, our seminarian, received $750 to assist in the costs of her second year of seminary at Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago.
  • Gene Fougner, on behalf of the children’s music ministry, received $250 for desk bells and music books.
  • John and Nancy Clark accepted a check for $828 on behalf of the Navajo Lutheran Mission in Rock Point, to assist in the purchase of a commercial dishwasher for their café.
  • Solveig Muus accepted a check for $828 on behalf of Spirit in the Desert Retreat Center, our ELCA affiliated center located in Cave Creek.

This month we are collecting backpacks and school supplies for the Humboldt Unified School District. Donations are coming in, and we are now putting them around the altar on the church chancel. We are looking forward to blessing them and sending them on their way to excited school children as classes begin in August!

Have you signed up yet?

Another indication that things are slowly getting back to normal…there is a Vitalant blood drive scheduled at Emmanuel:

  • Next Monday, July 19, 1:00 – 5:00 p.m.: Emmanuel Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall, 7763 E Long Look Dr. Prescott Valley! We won’t be posting any other donation opportunities, because we hope that you will schedule to donate at our blood drive. Drop-ins are welcome!

Blood supplies are always low in the summer and donations are especially needed. You can go to the Vitalant website www.vitalant.org and sign up.

We need volunteers to help after worship this Sunday, July 18 to move all the tables and chairs out of the Fellowship Hall to prepare for the Blood Drive on Monday, the 19th. Plan to be at the church at noon, and of course the more people who can help, the faster it will go! Let Mary know in the church office if you can help.

While there is no inherent risk of getting coronavirus when you donate blood, donors and staff are required to wear masks or reasonable cloth-based face coverings. Read our COVID-19 FAQs.

The Grand Canyon Synod Diakonia program is offering two information nights in the next month. If you are interested in leading or more fully participating in the life of the church, the Diakonia program equips lay leaders with foundational knowledge of the Bible, Lutheran doctrine, and church history. This intensive, two-year program also provides students the opportunity to learn and practice skills necessary for communicating the gospel, visitation, ethical decision making, and more. Online Zoom sessions are as follows:

Donna Morgan shared this heartwarming story of a man biking 2600 miles to raise awareness for organ donations, ending with hearing the heartbeat of his 20 year-old daughter Abigail, in the young man whose life she saved. Make sure you have a tissue handy!

As you know, I am always on the lookout for unique and fun music; here is Luca Stricagnol, playing Mozart’s A Little Night Music on the banjo! I suspect the toothpick is integral to the whole experience!

Beth Pounders took this sunset picture on July 4th from Prescott. God sure provides some heavenly fireworks!

A Bible verse for today:

Let all that you do be done in love.
