Faith Over Fear!
Sometimes the headlines and current events try to distract us from this vitally important fact: “God is with us! He will never leave us nor forsake us!” The events of Saturday left us all a little heartbroken and perplexed. And being a faithful Christian during such a difficult chapter of senseless violence and intense rhetoric is challenging, at the very least. We each have our own opinions about our country’s leadership and the direction that we are headed. Although it is obvious that we do not agree on everything, I dare say that we might agree on this: the level of fear in this country is off the charts!
And there’s something very interesting that happens when we allow fear – rather than faith – to rule our lives. We tend to say things that are hurtful. We lash out in ways that are 180 degrees away from our normal response mode. We act out of fear…doing things that never even cross our minds when we are acting out in faith and love.
So…I just want to remind us all – me included – that when tensions rise in society, the eyes of non-believers start looking our way…wondering how we will respond…what we will say…how we will treat those who think differently than we do. My friends…if ever we needed to shine the light of Christ into the world, that time is NOW!
Please remember that when we are engaging on social media, our words and the spirit in which we converse with others are on display for the world to see! Do our words align with the heart of Christ? Does the tone of our conversation reflect the power of the risen Christ in our lives? Will we be proud of our social media posts a year from now when the dust has settled but our words still remain?
I encourage us all to watch the news…but then not allow our thoughts to be controlled by what we see or hear! Let’s limit our “catching up on the news” time and balance our spirits with just as much “God-time”…either in prayer or by simply opening God’s Word. It is not only in our best interest – but the WORLD’S best interest – that as followers of Jesus, we choose not to live in fear! Let us live our lives – in both smooth and difficult chapters - with a bold yet, gentle spirit of faith!
As I shared with our clergy Sunday morning:
“Be a blessing, Disciples…I am so honored to share this journey with you!”
